I'm happy to see that people are not supporting her just because of her status. Who are we to complain about the Russian prison system? The US prison system is just as flawed, except it's the other side of the spectrum. The inmates have more rights than a regular citizen. They have a right to 3 square meals a day, they have a right to medical, dental, and mental health. They have a right to be safe, and to be free of sexual assault. All of these, and more not listed, are rights that no one can take from them, or they will be punished in legal and civil court. It all sounds fair. The problem is that the system starts to focus only on preserving and enforcing these rights to avoid lawsuits. And little or no real attention focused on security and safety of staff or the public. The cost of housing these people exceed the amount they would have earned in a regular job. We should enact minimal rights, allow inmates to work to pay back a debt to society, and give them less years. In the US, 10 years is a small sentence for most felonies. We hand out so much time. I believe that is the largest abuse of humanity. You can not get that time back, no matter how nice the prison system is.

She is worth 5 million or so and made 1.5 million playing ball in Russia. She played there for a number of years. From my very casual following of the story on the news, I was under the assumption she was naive to the working of the laws in Russia and unaware she had played there for years. Usually, in the first few days of starting a new job, you figure out what is "cool" to do and what you can't get away with on the job. But there were also people who seemed to get away with everything because they were top producers and things were overlooked. Perhaps she felt she fell into that category. Obviously, I have not kept up on the story but the authorities could have been tipped off by her competition. Which is another good reason to not even present the appearance of any illegal activities. It would be an embarrassment to the country if the citizens felt she was thumbing her nose at the same laws that they were under.

She was so oppressed by racism and bigotry that she could be an Olympic medalist and WNBA player. She was a professional basketball player. She had a gay marriage.
Do you realize, James, how ridiculous you sound, like Brittney was so oppressed..... of course she heard racist remarks. We ALL hear them. People are advertising their own stupidity when they say racist things - I thank them for the warning.

You think that Russians are not racists? What makes you think that, James?
Did you ever one time read the histories of African Americans who moved to the USSR? Do you know what students at Patrice Lumumba were called by locals? They called them monkeys or apes.
