I've watched locked up abroad, but I didn't feel sorry for any of them. The were guilty. Everyone knows in these foreign countries they don't mess around. They actually punish people. Not like here, where you get a slap on the wrist. I understand she made a mistake and forgot they were there, but be it as it may, that's the price you pay.. she spent 10 months out of a 9 year sentence. As far as I'm concerned, she has nothing to complain about. Maybe she learned a lesson. After all the crap she has said about the USA, they still came and fought for her. I think that's what bothers me most. She hates America, maybe now she'll appreciate it more, though I doubt it.

Yep first degree brain fart! Happens I recently moved, one last walk through everything packed, checked all over. I had two drawers full of expensive kitchen tools. For people wondering why Women's NBA players are even going overseas to begin with, it's a fact that these women are not getting paid well to play in the States. The money's just not there (yet) that these women can raise families with, & you only have so much time to play at your top level.
Russia is a unique case in the world of women's basketball. Unlike EVERY other Nation in the World (except maybe Italy) the Russians operate many sports leagues for one, very specific reason...
... money laundering.
Every City in Russia has a top mob crew. That mob owns that City's basketball team. It uses the team's resources to launder the money they get from their various hustles & things, & they "rent" the team out to the other, friendly mobs in their area who want to also launder their money.
They pay cash to buy tickets for fans who don't exist, & give out tickets for free to local schools & churches & businesses so that their attendance figures more or less match stated revenue. They spend money on advertising & promotional goods bought from vendors that they control. They manage the team budget to buy as much stuff from mob-owned businesses as it can, like concessions & bus companies & mob-owned hotels when they play on the road.
Now, do all the players know this?? and do they participate knowingly in crime?? I don't think they do, & if a player finds things out I'm not convinced that a smart player is going to tell the other players "uhhh, guys, this is very sus. We should probably quit."
For one thing, the Russians pay their players VERY well. Their floor wage for every player is something like 2½ to 3 times the Women's NBA's average salary, which is incredibly attractive for a journeyman NBA player, & the Russians can certainly afford it.
Also, & this is important, the Russian mob for the most part respects the game & its players. They're warm, accomodating hosts. A LOT of Russian mob guys are huge basketball fans. Everyone wants to Be Like Mike.
They also take special care to not fix games, for obvious reasons. If another team's owners find out that you're fixing games which messes with their business, well, now you've got a mob war on your hands. Noone wants to get shot up over a game of basketball so the actual game itself is remarkably corruption-free, which is amazing considering the sheer amount of organized crime that goes down every day in Russia.
So, now you know. I used to work in Russia, & I'm DEFINITELY getting her book, but I don't expect that any of what I just told anyone will be in her book. Even though their invasion of Ukraine basically killed the League & she'll probably never go back to Russia, it wouldn't be wise of her to spill these beans. A friend of mine told me horrific stuff about the prison experience he had in our New Orleans prison I assume it was, so I'm not even going to listen to this interview 😄. All I know is that Russian security was supernice to me when they confiscated my small kitchen knife when I had to change planes in Moscow flying through from NYC.
