    About those short bursts of power: Mr Musk once explained that in a lithium-ion battery, you have a limited amount of ions that is 'freely' available. This means that, when you demand full power, the top layer of ions on the anode is free to jump away to the cathode and give you the full power. But the layers of ions underneath of those have a stronger bond with the anode, so they take a little longer to release and jump through the electrolyte to the cathode. So that's why EV's with lithium-ion batteries can give big power bursts, but not for longer, continuous periods.
    (I know it's obvious from my explanation that I'm a total n00b, apologies)

    Also, don't forget that not only are electric bikes deliberately limited at the top end, they have to be at the low end too. With all that torque from 0 rpm they would be ridiculously wheelie prone if not. It's a shame that both Zero and Energica are cautious and won't give a bit more control over the power delivery to customers who are prepared to take a risk.

    Few questions.
    What was your SOC for the 1/4 mile runs?
    Do you think it would have accelerated faster with a higher SOC?
    Did you use your Dragy?
    What do you think it would have run if your top speed wasn’t capped?
    It goes to show 60 foot times and torque is what wins drag races! Great job. Love seeing this type of content. :)

    • @NewZeroland
      @NewZeroland  Рік тому

      Cheers! We both started with 98% and went down to around 85%, so in theory they all should have been full-power runs. I brought my Dragy but didn't have time to set it up between runs, and I still don't have a phone mount, so it would have been awkward. I'll try and get a proper 0-60mph run recorded with it sometime though. I feel at least mid-10's is possible if the top speed wasn't limited. An Ego+RS did a 10.5, and that seems doable on mine too!

    Considering the Ribelles are software limited they could quite probably be unlimited with a code or some sort of special devices (they're laughing to throw you off the scent!) much like you see with a lot of everyday Ebikes that are locked to a certain speed for regional laws, but can be unlocked or overvolted for higher speeds. But ultimately the makers do that for specific reasons, like not destroying the motor or making sure the rider can still handle the thing. You wouldn't want any old yahoo cranking out 150mph on their first track day, or even just heading to work.

    • @NewZeroland
      @NewZeroland  Рік тому +3

      Yeah for sure haha. The Ego map can do 150mph, and the Corsa can do even more (I think 170mph??).. but I wonder what's involved in downloading and tweaking those maps. I'll ask around. This is making me curious!

  • @spike_spencer
    @spike_spencer Рік тому

    That's interesting, the Zero SR I have actually displays true speed according to my GPS, which means it's only four miles an hour slower than these at top speed. 2.6/2.8 second 0-100 times just can't be matched by anything in the ICE world even though as an RSV4 owner I know how fast 300 is, 0-100 is way more practical.
    I'm still rooting for you to turn traction control off some day.

    • @NewZeroland
      @NewZeroland  Рік тому

      What! Since when can Zero SR's do 110mph?? Mine was limited to 102mph! Was that a 2017+ thing? Real world acceleration I think is still 3 seconds, but I'll get the Dragy out one of these days to see for sure. TC level 2 seems great for acceleration. I feel like anything lower would either wheelie or do a burnout. But ok I'll try it lol.

    • @spike_spencer
      @spike_spencer Рік тому

      Yep, 17+ were 108 factory limited but they opened it up two more MPH a couple of years ago with one of their firmware updates. I believe the firmware updates for the 16 SRs also gave an extra two miles an hour so if you were able to get the firmware update it was rated at 104.
      You'll want tire warmers but again I'd put slicks on, do a little burnout then modulate the tire slip yourself and you should be able to get the advertised time. Also when drag racing an electric you want to apply front brake and throttle at the same time so there is a stall torque on the wheel and then release the brake and fully apply throttle, which helps to maintain better traction and minimize the bounce.

    • @NewZeroland
      @NewZeroland  Рік тому

      @@spike_spencer dude 😂 I dunno if you've ridden an Energica before, but that would loop it immediately lol. That worked great on Zeros, but even with traction control level 6, Energicas lift the front wheel if you pin it hard enough. Level 2 was insane.

    • @spike_spencer
      @spike_spencer Рік тому

      The traction control and power seems much more similar to my RSV4 where I was lifting the front wheel at first on TC6 with my RSV4 too. It definitely takes a lot of practice to get comfortable with less and less TC but before long you realize how much you end up fighting with TC in race situations. I forgot to disable it in one of my rally runs and it was horrible. When I first got my RSV4, I thought there was something wrong with it because I had the TC on 8 since I'd never ridden one before.
      Every time I go out on the track the wheel comes off the ground especially when going 200 on the straight and shifting into 5th. It's a bit disconcerting but I find it's best to ride it out until you let go of the throttle and go heavy on the brake for the first turn.
      There is of course always the engineering solution to straight line wheelie problems...wheelie bars!

      It's a little known fact that vehicle speedometer calibration is regulated. They are not allowed to ever read slower than real speed, and there is a limit to how much faster they can read than actual. That's why almost every car on the road reads ~2% faster than actual from the factory. However, it seems to be different for different types of vehicles. 4x4s are often off by 5%. Every motorbike I've ever ridden has been off by at LEAST 5% and usually 7-10%. It's incredibly aggravating. Especially in 2022 when everybody has a phone with GPS that can give them their actual speed with an accuracyof less than 1% and is the opposite of vehicle speedometers in that the error is constant which means it's MORE accurate the faster you go.
      It is possible to have your speedometer calibrated to be much more accurate. I have a 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis that is spot-on at any speed according to several different GPS devices. Some of the methods of correcting speedometers can throw off your odometer and other things, though, (because the computer *knows* the factory OEM speedometer error and accounts for it) which makes attempting to calculate fuel economy etc. pointless. If you adjust your speedometer with a different gear, or as is often done with motorbikes a different size front tire, pretty much everything *besides* speed will be thrown off.
      Part of the reason is to prevent you from inadvertently getting speeding tickets, but it's mostly nanny state "safety" stupidity that has resuted in this nonsense. There's really no excuse in this day and age for speedometers not ALWAYS being dead on accurate. There are even ways for cars to calibrate themselves on-the-fly. There was at least one Cadillac in the 1980s that did that, and the tecnology to enable it now is so much better and easier.

    Aren't you guys limited by the rpm's of the electric motor? I would see that as the limiting factor since there is no tranny involved. Only so much the motor can spin before overheating, hence the limiter from he factory.

    • @NewZeroland
      @NewZeroland  Рік тому +1

      Yeah rpm would make sense. This isn't the max rpm of the motor though. It's the same powertrain as the Ego but the Ego's limit is 245km/h. Even that isn't the absolute max!

    Why is the displayed speed so much different than real speed? Is that also true at legal speeds? (100kph)

    • @NewZeroland
      @NewZeroland  Рік тому

      Yep, 100 in real life is like 106 on the dash, and it's super annoying. It makes setting cruise control really difficult. Apparently they do that on a lot of motorcycles as a safety thing, to slow us down.

    • @willburk
      @willburk Рік тому

      That seems crazy. I would've thought the government organization responsible for vehicle safety would require a level of accuracy. (Like NHTSA in the US) or maybe it's a high tolerance like 10%...
