  • In this episode I am trying to ride to San Cristobal de las Casas. I leave the peaceful and tranquil community of Lacandon Mayas, and quickly enter a very different world. I try to avoid the road which has lots of warnings, but the alternative road isn't free of obstacles either. I am on edge and do not trust anybody here.

It’s been six months since season six started on Dec 1 and Noraly has produce three videos a week every week. Not missing one video. Crazy impressive. She may go by Itchy Boots but I think “The Dutch Machine” is more appropriate. Hope you’ve found time for some rest and relaxation during this time. Keep having fun out there. Cheers.

Hi Noraly 👋👋👋👋!!! I just wanna say that in San Cristóbal you can find a youtuber and his family with the name VAGABOOM. His name is Denis (he is from Switzerland) his wife and little daughter from Mexico). They are in San Cristóbal at the moment. It would be really nice if you could meet them for a few hours or so (if you don't have much time left) Eating dinner and sharing life travel experiences, or maybe they can show you around a little bit... 😊 They're really nice people and it should be really nice that VAGABOOM 's subscribers can also meet you through them. Fear is a gift when you know how to interpret its signals. It was interesting to see Noraly react to the situation. She has traveled so much and been to so many different places that her intuition must be incredibly sharp. I would love to sit down and have a beer with her and listen to the stories that she doesn't talk about on video. If she shared her experiences with others, many things could be learned. A book called "The Gift of Fear" that I read years ago goes into depth about this stuff; it is an interesting read.

Yes, people should have a positive mindset, and should hope and wish Noraly the best in her travels. I think all the concern and panic for her safety on the road is because of a big lack of confidence in her skills and strength, because they are new viewers or who knows.. So in conclusion, it's not a lack of positive thinking, people should learn to trust her more.. and you learn by having more information, well.. she has 400+ videos of proof she's better than people think this she is.

Then the bars would be across and not longitudinal. A better explanation is that these are old railroad tracks used to span across pilings to make a bridge and then they put cement over the top to make a road surface, which in this case was quite worn.

    • @sjoerdbakker6040
      @sjoerdbakker6040 2 роки тому +22

      @@robcroese4677 et al
The pipes in the bridge are there as structural members from the time it was built . The back roads in Chiapas ,Tabasco ,Veracruz and other places were used by PEMEX oil exploration teams to search for oil deposits in all corners and PEMEX often would build the first bridges so that their heavy big equipment did not need to do water crossings . Being in the oil business with a supply of pipes at hand they ( or a subcontractor ) would often use such to construct the bridges almost entirely with pipes, instead of structural steel beams .Even the road deck has pipes lain in the length of the bridge and would be covered with a skim of concrete or simply a gravel-dirt mix . With use the covering layer wears away exposing the bare steel .This bridge is an example where the deck is made of modest diameter pipes and the gap is not yet deeply worn out and it was no big issue for Noraly to cross . In the Pantanos de Centla , the delta wetlands north of Palenque , there are long , high river-crossing bridges over the Usumacinta and its branches with the vertical support pillars also constructed of large diameter pipe . In some the high deck is made of much larger diameter pipes which tend to have deeper grooves and can be very annoying for a motorcycle to traverse . It gets doubly interesting when the concrete and fill have completely disappeared down through the gap .
As a side note , in some towns they have storm grates made with small diameter pipe placed parallel to the direction of travel and which are spaced so ridiculously widely that a skinny tire like on a Ralley or a pizza bike can get trapped😯 ! Ride with caution and always read the street surface . . .

Like you I speak some good Spanish and I have never had any problems. Check points are there for your safety and most of them have real Police/Army. My rule of thumb like every one else mentioned, do not ride at night, be careful and try to stay on the main highway. Go where your guts tell you! I rode, as a film maker, one of the "Narco Roads" between Chiapas and Guatemala a few years back and that was very interesting! I can not believe that you entered Chiapas and did not show us (you could not film I guess) the immigration process! Just be safe. You have traveled the world and so have I as a reporter/documentary film maker and if you look and think you will be okay, you have been ok for so many years. You will hear sab stories all over. I am getting ready to leave the USA in a few weeks on my way to Panama then to Patagonia. This will be my last long distance ride since I am getting older! There are a lot of homicides in Mexico but, if you aren't involved in the drug trade, it cuts your chances of being a victim by two thirds. Just like here in the US, there are places you avoid going to be safe and she did that. Also, as she said, time of day plays into how safe you are. I am planning to go to Ecuador with the possibility of staying a while. I kept hearing Guayaquil (airport I'd fly to) was dangerous. The woman Itchy Boots talked to in Ecuador told her Guayaquil was dangerous. I checked and their homicide rate is a third of the rate of the city I live in in the US. We can think the world is too dangerous to live in but, one of the biggest reasons I like this channel so much is the message that life is to be lived, be aware of the dangers but, don't let fear steal your life away.

The improvised roadblocks in Chiapas were there when I went fifiteen years ago. The locals claim you are on "ejido" land, which is indigenous land, and you must pay a toll to pass. Often it was just some kids with a rope across the road. I drove right through the ones where no one had any official signage. Turns out a truck can break a rope.

No need to go barreling through like some entitled jerk/yahoo. What he is suggesting is sound advice, unless someone is standing directly in front of the bike, go through as quickly as you can but do it safely without high speed, the idea is to look as much like a local as you can, not a tourist, that is why I made the comment to keep the goggles on, I know it is a little more difficult with her decked out bike and gopro's but every little bit helps. The late arriver here 😁
It was a simple funeral. Don`t freak out that much guys (I mean it kindly....).
Some bad things can actually happen in Mexico, as in everywhere.
Texas for example, in the "developed" side of the next border (...If you read the news. It was in a school, could have been in a mall).
Nevertheless, as many say here, is always good to be alert and cautious to some extent.
Municipal police is quite usual all around central and south America.
They are not armed, and function basically as local goberment employees, aiding real police with vehicular traffic, and other minor things.
I totally agree with some tacit feeling I sense here, the more untidy they look, the more concerns someone passing trough will have.
Usually the greatest danger with them is geting fined for parking in a wrong place. It`s just another way of giving locals a job.
And regarding that, I liked the sign at the hostel´s door.
"Se ponchan llantas gratis", "Flat tires for free...." 😆

4:52 That bridge reminded me of a series of bridges I ran across in a part of the country that was getting a bit icy due to the onset of winter. The roads were clear of ice but wet. The weather was dipping below freezing at night but in the high 30s during the day so ice on the roads were not really a problem, but could be on bridges. As I entered one county I was moving along at about 45 mph on a section of road that was very curvy and as I took a sharp left curve, I was suddenly on a bridge that the county officials thought needed some sand. Problem was that they put about 6 inches of sand on it so I went from riding clean pavement to instantly being on a sandy beach. While that may not have been a problem for cars, as you mentioned in your video, for a bike it drastically and instantly changed my handling to sliding and the front tire wanting to dig in.
I was able to save the bike and keep it upright but it sure got my attention. Every time I came to a bridge in that county, I took it slow and as straight up as possible. Whoever was on the crew that laid down that sand certainly was not a biker.
18:13 Even the -pizza- tortilla delivery guy was confused.

Well done on moving up with the crowd and staying with them... and then sticking with the red car... I am going to assume that you are in contact with your family back in the Netherlands every day as to where you are and what your plans are. Yes when each video is released we know that you are further on in your travels... but no matter where you are please go by your gut instincts and be safe*

All those old Nissan Sentras bring back good memories. I knew two people who had them and got to drive one. Very light and nimble simple cars.

I love San Cristobal, my first trip was 1987, not so touristy back then. Still a hive of activism, resistance. I also love Oaxaca.

You did everything right!!! Such a shame that a beautiful country like Mexico has so many internal issues. Hard for the citizens and for the tourists. Keep on your toes and keep smiling!

Safety and "internal issues" is relative. Areas of the US are less safe than many areas of Mexico.

@@stonew1927 Oh, I realize that. I've been to Mexico many times and felt totally safe each time. But this area appears to have its share of danger. Such a shame. It's not a comparison between USA and Mexico and which is the safest. It is a comment on this one particular little area of the world.

Noraly, I was on "pins and needles" as you were traversing the road on your way to San Cristobal. Also experienced some anticipatory anxiety when you were served tap water at breakfast fearing that you might suffer "Montezuma's revenge," diarrhea contracted by some tourists who visit Mexico. Be safe!

Most restaurants - even in rural areas - don’t serve tap water. If it’s not an individual bottle of water, it’s generally bottled water from a big 25 litre “garrafon”.

tap water ? wtf are you talking about? No one drinks or serve tap water in Mexico. Stop your shit.

I'm sure she is aware of Montezuma's revenge, and only drinks bottled water or treated water. She wouldn't be able to continue riding if she caught that amoebic dysentery stuff, it will put you down for a week, at least.
