    yo, there's 2 versions of the opening solo I've seen and this one is a semitone lower and significantly slower but they're from the same event (Miles is the mic stand for both) so I'm hella confused, anyone want to shed some light on how that happened? Love that first solo... there's an outdoor gig where Kenny builds to a massive honking climax amd then Miles just kind of keeps him onstage... "call that playing? Get back out there and give 'em more..." and he turns round and builds to an even greater level of intensity. REAL beast mode. Can't tell you the date or tune, though.

    I love this free style of playing - it reminds me of the recent Wayne Shorter quartet - but you can see how some people don't get it. It's like you've got to drop preconceptions about what music is, or should be, to get into it.

    • @arc236
      @arc236 7 років тому +2

      If someone comes to this expecting a good tune, they are going to be disappointed. (Although there is melody there, absolutely). But they shouldn't compare it with other types of music. It's better to compare it to a Kandinsky painting.

    This post is really outstanding. It's hard to pick a favorite one, but if I have to, I'll go with both #6 and #5: Garrett evokes the spirit of Coltrane, while still sounding like himself. Solo #5 is taken from the tune '2 Down & 1 Across', from Kenny's great 1997 release 'Songbook'. That particular group - Jeff Tain Watts, Nate Reeves and the late, great Kenny Kirkland - was one of a kind. Solo #2 is yet another version of the aforementioned tune, albeit taken at a slower tempo.

    Kenny's right up there with Bird, Sonny Stitt, Cannonball, Jackie McLean, Sonny Criss, and Art Pepper in terms of my all-time favorite alto saxmen. First noticed him when he was cuttin' his teeth in Miles' band back in the 80s, but it wasn't until a decade later (around his 'Triology' period) that I finally became hooked. His sound is so thoroughly modern yet so inviting at first listen, you just want sit back and groove to it!

      Your 100% on point! I saw him live at the MIM (Scottsdale, AZ) about two years ago. He did a solo in the opening piece that lasted about 15 mins or so. It was nothing less than spiritual... transcendent! At the end of that piece I and the person sitting next to me who I didn’t even know, looked at each other in amazement, both thinking “WTF just happened?!?” It was like we witnessed something extraterrestrial which was how I felt. I am almost certain he enters some type of trance because the amount of energy required to play at that level for as long as he does is mystifying.
