DISAPPOINTING! 16 Hours in United 777-300ER PREMIUM ECONOMY from Los Angeles to Sydney

  • What's it like to fly United Ultra Long Haul? Join me as I review the 777-300ER in Premium Plus from Los Angeles to Sydney. Overall, a rather underwhelming experience with United. The service was lacking, food was embarrassing and the delays and cancellations were very frustrating. The seat however, was nice, as were the amenities that United had on offer to Premium Plus passengers. Is it worth the upgrade? Yes, certainly. Not for the service that United offers, but simply for the extra space you have. 16 hours is a long time to be in the air, but this seat was light years ahead of economy. United charged us $399 to upgrade from standard economy to Premium Plus, a great deal considering what airlines charge for premium cabins.

16 Hours and 7500 miles of flying , they put you up, fed you through a cancellation, It even seems that you had a nice crew, decent seat, and in the end we judge the overall airline service based on the fact that you didn't get scrambled eggs and bacon for breakfast.

It is not about that alone. First they have to accommodate you for the cancelled flight. It s not like they went out of their way to be nice. And then, I think the point he is trying to make is that you pay a premium price for premium service and there are some things missing. I flew united premium plus once and had the exact same experience. Like you mentioned seat is nice, crew was nice (and generous with drinks) but the food was sub par. You can’t help but start making comparisons. I am not a frequent flyer but flew Texas to Sydney on Qantas in 2015 and remember that food begin better than united premium plus. Turkish has better food on economy! than united’s premium. And I agree that it’s disappointing. He is not acting spoiled if you ask me. It just feels like (at least felt like to me) the service is not in line with the price paid. But this is a compliant long being voiced by people that keep recommending non-us carriers for international flights, service is so much better. That being said, I still have an upcoming flight on united premium. Comfy seat is more important to me than a better meal service in economy. That’s me though…

@@MrMtm13 Yea fair enough but flights being canceled is about par for covid times. If you traveled in 2020/2021 you probably experienced it. How was it handled? Pretty well by accounts of the video. If you can afford to fly Qantas or Emirates when going international then you should. But to compare the service this person got for the price based basically on the difference between a hot breakfast their sister received - completely apples and oranges. Titling the video “Disappointed” is completely egregious imo based on the service/amenities provided given the circumstances of current times.

"Premium Plus" is not actually premium despite the name. It is just economy class with a bigger seat and more leg room. Hence the food being mediocre. All the premium economy products are like this in the United States. For a long haul trip like this it's not a bad proposition, but it's also not really luxury either.

From someone who used to fly very frequently, a good trip report. The lack of hot breakfast on that long of a flight in premium is somewhat surprising. I'd expect a hot breakfast in economy on a flight that long. Flying US versus international carriers is interesting in that the priorities are different. I will probably do Premium Plus if the fare is decent but I want that for space considerations alone and don't have high service expectations. I was a 1K in 2018 and Platinum in 2019 and just was notified of my Gold status for as United didn't extend my old status so I have my 1 Million Miler status. It is sort of liberating. I will probably start flying British in Club to London and Swiss in Business for my other trips. I will now book based on price, hard product and service without regard to carrier or alliance. Reports like yours help me plan future trips.

the problem from me with united is the people not the hard product nor catering. it's true in economy, it's true in premium cabins. they're just a cut below what they should be. better than american...but not near what you'll experience on alaska, southwest, or delta among us carriers and far worse than standard global average. irrops happens to all airlines, particularly during covid. but united's people are just a cut below. it's true on short-haul and long-haul (i've done iah-syd, lax-syd, sfo-hkg, sfo-sin. sfo-akl, sfo-nrt, sfo-lhr, ewr-jnb all in economy and most in premium economy or business too on united for reference) and it wasn't just the old ones hanging on to seniority...and that's the trouble with the post-pandemic rush to hire to meet demand. frankly, the regional united express partners, especially skywest for me, usually have better flight crew service than mainline. the problem seems to be in the process they use to hire. and that won't get better. united and star alliance go lots of places and i do have high status with them, but i regularly seek opportunities to fly other airlines.

You have to remember something important. On US airlines, you generally get lesser service than on many non-US carriers, but the prices are generally cheaper. US carriers really fragment the cabins and various travel options, which can keep the price down for the average flier. If you can do without a serious meal, then its the way to go. Actually, the fact that United still serves meals in any economy cabin is refreshing, as they did away with them on most flights, including many transcons and flights from the mainland toe Hawaii once the pandemic got really going, and are only now slowly reinstating meal service across the network.
Overall, United offers a good deal and decent if inconsistent service. I personally have a love-hate relationship with them, half of my flights with them being wonderful, the other half compromised by surly employees and poor service. Then again, I fly domestically, so perhaps I'm experiencing a lesser quality employee group than international travelers? Seriously, I've been around some wonderful United employees, some of the best in the biz, and few who just don't care.

In 2015 I flew with United from London to Chicago. I expected over the top service but I was very disappointed. My seat cushion to seat on was broken and sliding out easily. The plane looked like it was from the 90’s. I am very skeptical about flying with United again. Nothing was memorable about that flight

This is why I don't fly commercial anymore. It just isn't with it to me, even though I always fly First Class. I will say this, you will NEVER be treated as whelm on Delta, as you were with United! Delta has gone to hell in a hand basket. Go Woke....Go broke Delta!!

      Wow!
I am really appalled by the complexities of God's Creation.
      Flying over this vast Ocean.

I have 2 million miles on UA from 2005 to 2018. Their business/Polaris product was good, service and all. I took a new job in 2019 with no travel. Recently I did a roundtrip FRA to IAD and was upgraded to Polaris, how disappointing it was. Service was horrible. No beverage service, then-meal, then desert. It was all clumped together. The flight attendants were virtually none existent. I am thankful I am not a frequent flyer anymore.

They're bringing back the multi-pass service for business class this month internationally, starting with flights out of Chicago. They modified it for Covid and have been adding back small pieces of the normal service every month

Is the price truly a 10/10, given that the service wasn’t that great and the food is a complete joke.

He explained that at the start - they got a very cheap upgrade to premium economy, so the price value itself was great considering the amount they spent.

@@aussiesorcerer791 yeah but that was not worth the $400USD , well not on the food . Maybe it was worth the comfort .

I never get how people pay hundreds and thousands of dollars for ticket but complain about $20 food. Get your own damn food before boarding. If you can pay $1200 for premium economy u can pay for your own ‘good’ food. Its just food. 🤷‍♂️ Come on now. U not dying of hunger.

You should have (if it was an option) taken the Qantas flight, it would have been much better than United I am sure.
