  • Campfires, wood stoves, or wood burning of any kind is not allowed in Yellowstone National Park in the winter time so the camping in this video is done along the boundary of the park.

    I am used to watching your videos when the conditions aren't so extreme. I now have even more respect for you and your abilities. I've hiked in the Tetons and Yellowstone in the summer and always wanted to try the winter. My reality is without an expert like yourself or a guide, I wouldn't last the night. You make it look easy but I know better. Guess I'll just keep dreaming through your videos. I love that you capture nature and its beautiful wildlife the way you do. Thanks for sharing Stan.

      Edward, I am no expert either. But let me suggest how you can start winter camping. All you have to do is practice in your back yard where it is safe. Keep track of your temperatures and try different (better) cold weather gear. Find out what kind of cold weather you can handle. And then when you go out for real, give yourself a safety margin of say 10 or 15 degrees. For example, if you can camp down to 10F then go only if the forecast is forecasted to get down to 20F. Also, ALWAYS have a plan B! My plan B is the wood stove. So even though I can’t use the wood stove inside the park in the winter, I am not going to freeze to death because of that regulation. If I had to, I will use the stove, that is what I mean by a plan B.

    Stunning country...Truly inspiring. As the son of a trapper (northern Canada) reminds me of all the incredible years I spent in the wild. Now that my youngest is all grown up I plan to venture back into that wild much more often.

    Thank you so very much for taking us on this hike into famous and amazing Yellowstone Park. It truly takes a special kind of person for this kind of adventure. Not many would dare! I can not see how you can crawl into your sleeping bag and go to sleep all alone up there in your tent; I would die of fright the first hour. I would be sitting in my tent waiting for a grizzly, moose and Bigfoot ...if not one then the other surely would find me. I get afraid sitting at home watching you!

While some of the group wouldn't be able to complete your types of hikes, I would like to get them off the beaten patch a mile or two to see the beauty without the crowds. Stan, Thanks for another fantastic video. You have motivated me to borrow my Dad's snowshoes and try them out. I have a question on your Kenetreck warmer weather boots. How do you keep them dry walking a few hours in wet grass or crossing multiple creeks like I've seen in your other videos? My feet still get wet in my leather hiking boots, even when they are well waxed. I'll buy those Kenetracks if they'll keep my feet dry.

    Hello Stan, great vid.
    Questions:
    1-Do you store the food outside your tent when sleeping? If so, how far away and how high?
    2-why no vid of the nighttime stars? Perhaps the camera isn’t capable?
    3- When it’s -20 outside, what is the temperature in your tent with the stove going full blast?
    Thanks, George

      These wood stoves fold up and will fit inside a backpack. When it was 20 below zero I could keep it at about 30 F if I kept the stove going on low, but you have to put wood in it once an hour. I also had a thermometer in my tent.

      I have an inReach satellite communicator. So I would use that. But it is very dangerous in this kind of weather because you may not last long enough. You may freeze to death before help arrived.

    What is the purpose for banning fires during the winter in Yellowstone? It seems that the fire danger would be extremely low.

    • @StanMills
      @StanMills  3 роки тому +1

      Nate, the only reason I can think of is that it would be hard to fight a fire if one got started. Otherwise I don’t know why either. Maybe someone will read your comment and give us a clue.

      Jan, Look in the video description section for the winter boots that I wear. They seem to work well and my feet don't get cold. They are at least one size bigger than my normal size so that I can have a couple layers of thick wool socks and still allow for a loose fit around my feet. For my hands I wear a very good quality mitten and inner liner. The mittens I have I bought 10 years ago from REI and they are "The North Face" Summit Series, it says on them. I think they cost around $200 back then. They work fine, but for times like taking down camp when it is very cold I will put a "Little Hotties" Hand Warmer in each mitten. I guess all of our modern equipment is better than what the old timers had.
