10 Amazing Video Game Performances By Famous Actors

- Notable film critic Roger Ebert once said that "video games can never be art". Of course, Mister Ebert has said a lot of things over the course of his career, but the most interesting thing about this particular quote is that it suggests that the world of films and video games will always be separate. Oh, how things have changed. In a media landscape where these two worlds perhaps have more crossover than ever before, it’s not only starting to become common place to see recognisable faces from the acting and performance arts spheres appearing in more and more of our favourite video games, but many of them have given some of their very best performances in said medium. Here are 10 Amazing Video Game Performances by Famous Actors.

Command and Conquer was WILD. They got a bunch of A-List actors to do the most ridiculous script I've ever seen, and they just had their fun with it. Thanks to that, Tim Curry will always be remembered as our favorite communist.
The Command and Conquer full motion videos are iconic
I was never into command and conquer game but found those cuts scenes on YT. They are amazing. “SPACE !!!” 😂
Tiberian Sun somehow managed to get in James Earl Jones and Michael Biehn too!
I still see him as my favourite Wilderness Girl!😂
Ray Liotta as Tommy Vercetti in GTA: Vice City.
Samuel L. Jackson as Tenpenny in San Andreas
@@bairmorritt Ray Clay in NBA IN THE ZONE 2. Godfather PS2 re-cast from original movie.
There needs to be a part 2 of this list. Heck, you could probably make a part 3. There are just so so many.
I agree. Tim Curry is a treasure.
First Ubisoft ignores him for a decade and now TripleJump does the same. Sam Fisher/Micheal Ironside just can't catch a break.
Gary Oldman in black ops
I met JK Simmons once at a PR event. Super nice guy.
Such an icon
I think Leonard Nimoy, Christopher Lloyd & Rutger Haur should be included on this this list for their turns at playing Xehanort in Kingdom Hearts. They each brought an impressive take on the old man during their turns in the franchise. I think Xehanort is 1 of, if not THE best, roles Nimoy did during his final years before he passed away. Nimoy saying an extra emphasized "X-Blade!" sends shivers up my spine every time. Haur was a good stand-in for Nimoy for KH3. And Lloyd... wow. They managed to sneak him into the 1 old Xehanort Re:Mind scene perfectly. I didn't realize he was played by a different actor until discovering by chance later. Square did a great job of picking actors for such an iconic villain for so many years.
Really most of the cast of Kingdom Hearts, whole I'm sure by the time KH3 came out they weren't that expensive to hire but in the KH1 and 2 days I bet they were pretty expensive. The voice acting credits of Kingdom Hearts look like a whose who of early 2000s teen magazines. While the guys probably don't go for as much money as they used to they got Hayden Panettiere and Britney Snow BEFORE they were super expensive. Then as Aerith in the first game she was played by Mandy Moore (This is US and A Walk To Remember) then she was recast as Mena Suvari (Carrie 2). Lance Bass from NSYNC as Sephiroth....looking back 20 years later the casting of Kingdom Hearts voice actors is more crazy than the plot.
@@Chelaxim I agree. Kingdom Hearts can almost be seen as a time capsule of big and/or up & coming actors. The fact that they even got Christopher Lee (OG voice of the real Ansem, also well know for Saurumon in LotR), Billy Zane (KH1 evil fake Ansem) really shows off some great actors. Heck, they even got Mark Hamil (Luke Skywalker himself) for 2 games. I can only imagine the reactions of Star Trek & Star Wars fans, when they realized Nimoy & Hamil have credits in the series.
@@3enCooperI'm not too familiar with his roles, but he did do a good job of taking Nimoy's place briefly in KH3. I fo know him from 1 of the Poseiden Adventure movies, & he was good in that.
Leonard Nimoys line readings for Civilization IV were also pretty fantastic. Especially him "quoting" Sputnik.
"BEEP BEEP BEEP"
If you told me back in 2010 that Keanu Reeves was ever going to be praised for his acting, I wouldn't have believed you... and I still think he's average at best but really good at picking roles that resonate with a particular audience.
@@ItsMeBarnaby Yeah but he was never actually good. I'm not that much of a believer in big awards being the litmus test but you only need to look at his awards and nominations wiki page to see that he's never been considered a good actor by anyone other than the lowest common denominator.
@Ariurotl That dude used Bram Stokers Dracula as an example of good acting 💀 The movie that was infamous for the worst fake brittish accent since Marry Poppins and I can't say the actors name because youtube will delete my comment. Keanu is a nice bloke but the weirdest thing about Gen Z is the historical revisionism of Keanu's acting. The man hasn't had a 35 year long career because he's a skilled actor he had such a long career because he is a nice guy.
When he's in the right role, Reeves is fantastic. He doesn't have the best range, but he absolutely nails his sweet spot. His Johnny Silverhand is a great role for him imo.
Reeves has a very limited toolbox, but he uses it well. He’s best as either the stoic, blank action star (Matrix, Speed, John Wick) or the complete West Coast goofball (Bill and Ted, Always Be My Maybe, Freaked).
Tuned in to hear SPACE! Was not disappointed.
I mean, you can find these people in Mass Effect :
Keith David
Martin Sheen
Carrie-Anne Moss
Yvonne Strahovski
Marina Sirtis
Adam Baldwin
Freddie Prinze Jr
Buzz Aldrin
Lance Henriksen
and if I fill in Red Alert 3 it should be floodwalled
Keith David is Legend!
Though not as famous, Stephen Merchant and Ellen McLain were also great in portal 2. The writing in that game was fantastic.
1. Samuel L. Jackson (Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas)
2. Mark Hamill (Batman: Arkham trilogy)
3. Christopher Judge (God of War series)
I hope there are follow-up videos for great performances of famous actors in video games Lists ... Because not including Mark Hamill in Wing Commander is unfortunate
Tim Curry also voiced Rendon Howe in Dragon Age: Origins, and played the part fantastically. If you play the human noble, (Cousland’s) you’ll find Howe as the supposedly close friend of Teyrn Bryce Cousland (the Warden’s father), who betrays the Cousland’s in a plot to claim the title as Teyrn himself by killing half of the family and ultimately becomes one of the main villains in the game.
The part was superbly acted, giving you a sense of hating the character bitterly right up to a most satisfying end, when your Warden seeks out their revenge!
Ah, Jeffery Combs. One of the most versatile actors in all of sci-fi. Almost as important to the galaxy as Miles O’Brien.
Or Garak.
Didn't Command and Conquer Red Alert 3 have Ric Flair too? That game's cast truly is one to behold.
Roddy McDowall voicing the tutorial for A Bug's Life gets a nod of honor from me; he was one of my favorite actors and I believe that was the last work he did before passing away.
Keith David is also amazing as Captain/Ambassador Anderson in the Mass Effect series, as well as both Julius Little and himself across the Saints Row series.
Where’s Brian Cox as Lionel Starkweather in Manhunt?
I wish Ebert was still alive today so UA-camrs can talk him into playing games like Gris, Abzu and Oxenfree to prove him wrong
Wow, no mention of Mark Hamill as Joker? Ray Liotta as Tommy Vercetti in GTA Vice City? Bruce Willis in Apocalypse? (Okay maybe not that one)… wow. Some seriously overlooked entries that should be in the list more so than some that are on there right now. But, it’s your list.
"Tried to focus on great performances that haven't already recieved tons of recognition"
Then does Keanu Reeves Cyberpunk 🙄
9:01 i was waiting the whole entry for this & you did not disappoint 👏
I wouldn't say that these are amazing performances. They're just the most recognizable ones. Malcolm McDowell was OK in FO3, but he gave better performances in other games, like Wing Commander and Killzone.
Yup, another vote for Malcolm McDowell in Wing Commander!
Space Marshal Sir Geoffrey Tolvyn is just legendary. Malcolm McDowell played the character to perfection. Especially in Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger. Malcolm McDowell also voiced the character in the animated tv show "Wing Commander Academy".
He clearly understood the character and all of his struggles during the Kilrathi War.
His performance in Fallout was great, but he was perfect in Wing Commander.
When i saw Keith David i thought they'd say David Anderson. 😞
5:46 Never knew J.K Simmons played yellow M&M. TripleJump videos are entertaining and educational all at the same time lol
I didn’t either lol
If we're talking deeper cuts here, Carlin as The Truth in San Andreas was always enjoyable. Although I'm sure Ebert wouldn't have considered him an "artist" either, so it might not be a great example.
Honourable mention to Rik mayall in Hogs of war😂. Still memorable
Mr Ebert has been quiet on pretty much everything lately 😂😂😂 suppose that is the worst side effect of being dead 😮
I figure it would be all the whole "not living" thing but I could be wrong.
Not sure why such a stupid joke got and likes but ok
Yay for mentioning Keith David as Goliath.
Tim Curry is always awesome. But I think he is better in Sacrifice.
Would love to see you guys do every command and conquer ranked from worst to best
"Keith Daviiiiiid..."
Oh wait.. Not Craig?
Chris Moyles in the 24 must have just missed the cut!!
I love Malcolm McDowell, but "having a reputation for choosing his films well" is definitely not how I'd describe him. More like "will be in whatever movie will pay for the accommodations." Same with Ben Kingsley and Eric Roberts, he must just be in constant debt haha
What!? No 50 Cent? All jokes aside, though, I feel like Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa did pretty good as Shang Tsung in Mortal Kombat Aftermath. A role, of course, that he had played long before in the 1995 MK movie. Also, I know that it's not a much liked game by many, although I don't know why, but The Callisto Protocol had Josh Duhamel playing as it's main character and I think his performance was vey good, too. Some older ones that I can think of are Samuel Jackson and Ray Liotta in the GTA series. I'm probably missing other good ones right now that I'll think of later but oh well.
Elliot Page did a phenomenal job playing a woman as a male actor. Stunning and brave some would say
Make a part 2 about this topic.
I came for the "spaaaace!" and TripleJump did not disappoint.
SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACEE!
Elliot Page.. Great performer, great Haligonian 🇨🇦👍
Huh, I never knew that was the term for someone from Halifax. Then again, I can’t say I’ve encountered too many people from there!
Anyone remember the ps1 Bruce Willis game, Apocalypse? 😂
Actually, I thougt Malcolm McDowell put together some of his best work in Wing Commander 3 and 4. But I guess Fallout 3 was good too.
Not to go play Command and Conquer Red Alert 3...currently on sale, good timing, thanks! 🤣
The Wing Commander games had such an amazing cast. In addition to McDowell, there was Mark Hamill, John Rhys-Davies, Thomas F Wilson, Francois Chau, Josh Lucas, and the voice of Tim Curry.
I once saw an interview with Mark Hamill after Wing Commander IV came out. He mentioned that his kids loved playing it-particularly so they could watch the cutscenes of the Kilrathi killing Hamaill’s character in horrific ways.
@erakfishfishfish I forgot about Tim Curry, so yeah, another multi feature from this list. Surprised the didn't include WC3 or 4 now
I would have picked Ron Perlman for the narrator in the Fallout if someone had to be picked from the franchise.
Liam Neeson as father in fallout 3
Nolan north as richtofen In cod zombies 👌 and Gary Oldman as reznov
Matthew Perry in New Vegas.
Leonard Nimoy in Seaman 🤌✨
Her lead performance.
SPACE!!!
SPAYCE!
Tim Curry in Gabriel Knight Sins of the Father’s was a far better performance and I think it predates red alert 3. It also had mark hamil as detective “mossllleee”
Brutal Legend, aka Jack Black, Tim Curry, and Ozzy Osborne
The CC is just messed up 😅
Poor Siskel
The Fallout series wouldn't be the same if Ron Perlman wasn't the narrator.
Jk Simmons was great in OZ
Tim Curry is great in everything Frankenstein : Through the Eyes of the Monster would have been better if there had been more Tim Curry
Sam Jackson in GTA SA .
The British and Tim Curry. Lmao...smh
I like keanu reeves as much as anyone, but his performance in cyberpunk was not good. It was just reading of the script.
Most of these “actors” phoned in their performances but the worst was KR
Roger Ebert died in 2013
Lovely list idea, and list! gg 3Jump
Sorry, but as great as Keanu Reeves is, his performance in CP2077 was not good lol. The guy wasn't even trying.
10 should still be listed as Ellen Page. Page didn't change his name till recently.
Page has asked that the name on his previous works be retroactively changed. Many studios and creators have done so out of respect
👽
No Mark Hamill, but Rami Malek did the cut? *smh
Video Games > Film
Preferences > Gatekeeping
Quite sure i played as a woman in Beyond Two souls. So whats all this him talk?
It’s because Page came out as a trans guy a few years ago.
@@MSorge13 But it's not trans in the game. I really doubt they changed character's gender just because 10 years later the mocap actress decided to be a man.
@@patrik3482 The character isn’t trans, no. The “he” and “him” was for the actor, not the character in the game. The character is and remains female.
Fart
Dead Internet Theory strikes again
Notable film critic Roger Ebert was a terrible film critic, go back and watch a lot of his old reviews and he is so off the mark with a lot of really well regarded movies. Dude was a rage baiter.
Yeah i really don't like Roger Ebert...
Reviewers give their opinions, it may not be the same as yours or mine or the mainstream. Wanting them to line up with the consensus is bad for critical thought and encourages groupthink. Sadly too many people are more concerned with something's metacritic score.
Not really talking about metacritic here, i get it's all subjective. Of course we want divisive opinions, what we don't want are divisive opinions for the sake of being divisive. A lot of the time he had very shallow reasoning for writing off a film as trash without any nuanced discussion about it, refusing to hear siskel or roeper's point of view, rarely mentioning any redeeming qualities of a movie. It would be along the lines "there is no artistic merit to this ghastly film that's just an excuse to fill the screen with XYZ". Many of the more critiques he made about some of the more popular films he reviewed didn't make much sense or he simply missed the premise entirely. It was to a point where it seemed like he was more interested in how people reacted to his reviews and the arguments he had with his co-hosts than actually critiquing movies.
I'm fine with hearing views contrary to my own about a movie/game/whatever and even agree to disagree. like i certainly like some movies that aren't popular or well reviewed, but if you are critiquing something, actually critique it and if the premise of your show is to discuss a film you've watched with your co-host hear them out. I've always got the feeling though that people were more interested in seeing them argue and bicker though.@@teeveeparty
Elliot page is wack lol
If Keanu is on list I'll have to unsubscribe
Weird, babies are usually cute
