Despite sharing some similar symptoms, inflammatory bowel disease, IBD, and irritable bowel syndrome, IBS, are two very different disorders of the digestive system.
IBD, which includes ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, results from an inappropriate response of the immune system. The bowel in IBD is inflamed, causing damage that can readily be seen with imaging techniques such as colonoscopy. IBD may have serious complications and may increase risks for colon cancers.
IBS, on the other hand, is a functional disorder, meaning the bowel does not function properly, but there is no visible structural damage. It rarely requires hospitalization and does not increase risks for colon cancer.
IBS is thought to associate with problems in the gut-brain axis, a system by which the nervous system regulates gut activities, such as intestinal muscle contraction and digestive enzyme secretion. The system ensures that the colon moves food at an optimal pace, allowing the body to reabsorb the right amount of water and nutrients before stools can form. IBS patients often have irregular colon motility patterns. When food moves too fast through the colon, less water is reabsorbed and stools become more watery. When food moves too slowly, more water is reabsorbed and constipation results. Sensory nerve endings in the bowel of IBS patients are also more sensitive, or “irritated”, producing the sensation of pain.
Typical IBS symptoms include abdominal pain or discomfort that is often relieved upon defecation, mucus in stools, bloating, gassiness, and diarrhea or constipation, sometimes alternating bouts of diarrhea and constipation. Symptoms of IBS do not include anemia, intestinal bleeding, weight loss, or fever. People with IBS are more likely to have other functional disorders such as fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome; while IBD patients often experience inflammation of joints, skin and eyes. IBS symptoms can be triggered by stress, certain foods, and often get worse around menstrual periods in women. IBD is not known to associate with any obvious triggers.
IBS is much more common than IBD. The 2 disorders affect similar age groups, but IBS affects more women than men.
Treatments for IBD include a number of medications, and often surgeries, while most cases of IBS can be managed with diet, and stress reduction.

Im quite relieved that my symptoms match ibs more, its not like i want any health problems but atleast with ibs it cant lead to anything bad and so on. Ever since i found out about ibs i’ve always suspected its responsible for the symptoms i experience and although it increases my anxiety when researching about it, im glad i watched this video.

I was diagnosed with IBS about 5 years ago and have lived in horror since. It's been a mostly guessing game as to when symptoms will activate and what food causes major issues.
I've cut out so much food from my diet and yet it's like I can digest less and less.
I'm literally feeling the food shoot through my insides, and for so long I thought I was imagining it. This explains I'm not wrong, it IS moving way too fast.
However, if it doesn't shoot thru me quick, I throw everything up within about 30 mins after eating. Totally "involuntary bulimia" is what I've started calling it.
It's a nightmare to live. Especially when you love food like I do.

Does the vomiting/nausea happen a lot? I have stomach problems managed a lot with meds but I never was told ibs could include the vomiting and nausea I was experiencing. Do the symptoms only happen after eating or can the vomiting/ bowel problems happen sometimes without eating? Thanks.

Many doctors have told me I have IBS, but the pain is just incredible I felt like it must have been something else.
I pushed for testing to see if anything else came back and thankfully nothing showed up. IBS is horrible and no one really understands, they think it's just when you eat something you need to go to the toilet.. haha I wish! For me it's crippling pain but I'm glad it's not inflammatory Bowel disease or anything else.

IBS is a blanket diagnosis where doctors too lazy to investigate your gut any further when they find that there is no structural damage/issues in the gut. Have you considered celiac disease or non-celiac disease gluten sensitivity? Try looking these up as they may be contributing to your gut pains. Also speak to doctor about the medication you can try for the pain such as Amitryptiline or SSRI. It may be beneficial as the gut/brain axis, where the gut and brain work hand in hand.

For a while I had been seeing a gastroenterologist and had been diagnosed with Crohns. Now I am beginning to see that I might have been misdiagnosed. The symptoms of IBS-D have recently appeared to match my own overall symptoms. The explanation of IBS (especially diarrhoea predominante seem to explain my own situation. I shll seek a different GI specialist to see if I would be correct. I have at present no signs of cancer, and no evidence of calprotectin which only shows up in Crohns. I am not a doctor, however from what I have been reading from many websites, the symptoms seem to match more with IBS-D. I also have CFS as well.

I’m 17 and I have irregular periods, I only had one this year. And early this month my stomach has been hurting when eating. This has stoped thank god. But I still get lower stomach pains and aches. It feels like I have gas in my stomach and sometimes I feel like I need to poop, but nothing comes out. I poop everyday still just in the morning, but it varies everyday. Sometimes it a normal poop other times it has more of a diarrhea consistency. But the pains I get feel like menestral cramps. But I’m not on my period. I only got my period on time this year in July. Does my weird gut pain have anything to with my irregular periods?
I also got this last year, but it went way. I took probiotics. But it came back this year. I don’t know what to do because this is effecting how I’m doing in school.
