The man could write 1000 hits for the billboard and make millions like other "Rock'n'Roll" singers we all know, but inssists on his own Art and Truth. Nothing but respect and admiration dear PH.
Peter hammil in an unsung genius of our time, I found him in my teens in van dear Graf, changed my view on music forever. He wrote the saddest couplet I ever heard....."the stars shine, but they're not for me" Daves sax is haunting
This is DOUBLE~PLUS~GOOD! it reminds me of when I met Peter, Stuart Gordon, and Nic Potter a year or two before this, backstage at the Clapham Grand in London. Hooligan and Mozart were really nice Blokes, I had to persuade them to Autograph Peter's Book "Killers, Angels, Refugees" by saying I'd tell Peter I made them sign it! ( Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition!) I did square it with him without any problem, and Mr Hammill added his Signature beside the other two. It's a bittersweet tale, as Stuart and Nic are sadly no longer here with us. I still Treasure the Book. R.I.P MOZART and HOOLIGAN.
I've recently rekindled a friendship born in the 1970s. The first questions my refound friend asked was did I really ever really like VDGG or was I just determined to be different and did I still like them. Strange questions to ask a saxophonist. The answer now is the same as then, yes. As to why, just listen to Jaxon. Arguably he might not be Coltrane but my word do I love his playing.
What an evocative voice! When Rob Halford used to use his lower range early in Priest's life, warmer, a steady and consistent vibrato, a darkling baritone ... it's very clearly where he got part of his inspiration from.
I know, hopefully PH puts the light on green to put this Show on DVD or cd, to good for the vaults and an almost forgotten part of the PH Story, unrightly so as this Show proves.
Well, no Guy evans, no Hugh Banton, but magical and brilliant as always. Why this format? Was Nick Potter (RIP) not available? We need more Peter Hammills. Unfortunately, there is only one, but he fills my cup. Thank you for sharing your gift with us.
David Jackson and Stuart Gordon really work well together here. Such chemistry. David Jackson is such an excellent sax player. You wonder whe he isn't rated up there among the greats. He should be!
@@jeanlucchapelon Salut J.-Luc, Tu rigoles ? Tu y vas ?
I agree but for my young age, knowing only the albums of the 70's these sounds are under of what I could wait for. If I can throw a veil on it, perhaps could I rediscover something smelling well owh so well, beautyfull in fact for my ears, my soul. I'm waiting for another guy like this man.
Damn, I just discovered here that Stuart Gordon had died, checked out his obituary, and realised that he was the violinist in a wonderful duo called "The Short Wave Band" who I saw a number of times at university. Saw Gordon playing with Hammill live in Athens a few years back and never made the connection. A sad loss. Hugely underappreciated musician. I remember thinking that when he and PH really got stuck into it, they could make enough of a (wonderful) racket to put the wind up Lemmy! Not something you would always say about a guitar and violin duet.
I only met Stuart once. He was playing with the Keith Warmington Band at the Mission Theatre in Bath, must have been around 2006. I had arrived early. I will never forget that he took the time to come over to me and chat before before the performance. A lovely man, a great musician and a very sad loss.
In reference to Stuart Gordon - "...he also toured extensively with Peter Hammill, who said there was never any need to rehearse with Stuart, as he would instinctively always know what to play."
David Jackson is a great too. That makes two greats at.least.In Van Der Graaf. How DJ interpets PH's lyrics and vocals through his sax is untoppable. The rest of VDGG are great too.
My theory is there's some device in Jax's hat piloting the sax. Great stuff, although for Generator fans rather than pure Hammil fans, it's a bit like Floyd without Rick Wright.
@@multi-purposebiped7419 its different, i love both bands...and while Wright is at the heart of all best Floyd, the VDG (-G) version of the group and a whole lot of solist Peter still are truly great because of his songs and singing alone...
Very cool. I saw the same band do a shorter version of this set in Grenoble earlier in the same tour. I didn't think there was any video out there of this incarnation of the band. Thank you!
Have never seen this band configuration before! Am trying to decide if the lack of bass is a problem or not. Love the way Gordon & Jaxon play off each other. Such a tragedy that PH and DJ have since fallen out.
Crimson, Zappa, V.d.Graaf G., Gong...........etc.
Its been over 20 years ago, I found a CD in a small record shop in my hometown... the beginning of my passion called VdGG and Hammill. I'm glad to find still today such great pearls! Thanks a lot for uploading!

Tomo buena nota de la recomendación. Voy a buscar el album. Gracias. Por razones personales el album de Hammill que me tocó más fue el "As close as this"
I don't get why they couldn't have a bass player!
peter hammill forever great music at the end of time
great performance: the violin: the sax: the voice the only expressionists in music
& I was there. Peter the Great!

A Headlong Stretch better than in the original recording, absolutely marvelous
What an axecution! I saw them in Rome, that year, it Was memorable

Hammill’s clothing and hair makes him look like ‘70s Bowie, which is interesting. I love Peter Hammill and Van Der Graaf Generator.

pure vibration…

No bass... What a challenge! I love you Peter.

great show! Love the quartet.
Straordinari!!! VDGG band grandiosa!!! PH voce incredibile e puro genio....sublime!!!
Monumental!!!
Fantastic!!
Crikey, "Headlong Stretch" must be an extremely difficult, Epic, Piece to play onstage, but they pull it off. Brilliant.
saw them a the time in Paris, great sound with the late Stuart Gordon
awesome recording! great image, great sound and (of course) fabulous music!

A must for all VdGG and Peter Hammill afficianados. Superb footage from Russia TV and superb performance from the Peter Hammill Quartet.
Thank you very much!

PH es uno de ellos!
thank you for this gift!
I saw them on that tour, thinking this is the closest I'll ever get to experiencing VDGG live. I was wrong :D But this was great in its own right
I was there. Peter the Great!
masterpiece.

Spiritual, sensory and rebellious, music of this composer reveals secret impostures, explores serene pleasures, a world of resurfacing dreams ! 💫💦

This is mighty as a rose.
What a very strong line-up this was, and what a great performance. Many thanks for uploading this wonderful gig.

Many thanks! It's simply perfect. Remembering my first PH concert (and the K group?) in the University of Linz. Sometimes in the late 80's.

So sad. Not enough people heard the news either. He was very adept with PH.
Shit, I had no idea. Stupendous musician. The best ever rock violin player in my opinion. Sad news.
muchas gracias por esta verdadera joya. god bless you
I think I know what you mean about the voice compared to 1970s maybe but most fans think he still has a great voice even today (2012 shows)
whew... now 2022 and VdGG is touring. And people still say he sounds great. It's all relative ;). I still like it
