Thank you! People really took it out on Maya saying she was attention seeking yada yada. As a chronically Ill child who grew up being treated like dirt because of it, THANK YOU! for being a good one ❤️ people don’t understand how adults telling you that you are making things up when you are actually really sick impacts the psyche of a child even when it doesn’t end as badly as this with a parent unaliving themselves. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I appreciate you and all the good RN’s, CNA’s, etc. the world needs more of that and less of this hands down.
@@Myosotis.journaling this was her mentally ill mother’s fault. Munchausens is a serious mental illness that kills many - usually slowly. Hopefully Maya will get better now thst her mom is removed from the scenario
While I agree, this was admittedly an incredibly unusual case, with such extremes rarely witnessed in the entire career of all those involved particularly the induced coma Mya was routinely subject to often for in excess of 7~10 days at a time & using a very little known about drug called Ketamine due to its infancy in medical use , much less subject to safety testing and /or uses studied within the application for medical care in very young minors under the age of 10 years old. And as such, particularly as humans are prone to mistakes, it doesn't surprise me what occurred, but having said all of that, for absolute life of me, I'll never ever comprehend how a mother so devoted to & with such love for a daughter could conceivably consider depriving said child of a mother & all that accompanies that, particularly while already enduring extraordinary circumstances that abandoning ones child to navigate alone without the presence & love of a mother by her side is an unimaginable infliction of cruelty I simply cannot conceivably comprehend.
That family cleared their mom’s reputation and her memory. That’s all that matters to them clearing their moms name. Their heart break is so devastating.
She is 17. Her brother is 14. The family has been under immense stress and strain both emotionally and financially and behaved with courtesy and restraint throughout. Their relief at having this acknowledged must have been immense. More respectful headline required, please!!
Even if she never sees the money, the jury believing her and doing the right thing is absolutely priceless!!! Edit: for that that can’t read through the comments for the answer to why she may not see the full 200million….. read through the comments. Quite a few have answered including myself 😒
I'm a retired 33yr Australian police veteran, I've seen some heartache in my career, but seeing the pain this family endured made me cry for them and their profound loss.
I literally lost sleep over this. If Maya had been my daughter, and this is how they treated Maya's mother, in a hospital setting, with guards and medical personnel all around, I believe they would have killed me. Maya's mother exhibited unbelievable restraint. God rest her soul. She was a good mom.
What's sad is, there was no investigation done at all and blame the first judge as well. He/She ordered Maya separated from her family just based on allegations without investigation into the claims
CPS really does so much wrong when it comes to taking kids away from good parents that don't deserve to lose them and I hope they do get held accountable one day soon.
Perfectly worded, especially “CORPORATE MONSTER” The Jury did their job! The truth prevailed. Thank you Jury for seeing through all the lies and coverups of JOHNS HOPKINS ALL CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL
I'm just a hospital technician, but even I had to go through classes on professional conduct and HIPAA. What that hospital did to Maya and her family not only violated HIPAA, it was in no way how a medical professional, much less a doctor, should act. I hope all the doctors and nurses involved in this tragedy get suspended and investigated. Dr. Smith, specifically, needs to get her license revoked. She obviously can't do her job correctly.

edit In November 2018 it was revealed that the mortality rate in its pediatric heart surgery program was very high. The surgeons in the pediatric heart surgery program made serious mistakes and procedures went wrong in unusual ways. Surgeons in the program had lost needles in two infants’ chests and infection rates of patients spiked.[18] The problems started after the departure of program leader Dr. James Quintessenza after hospital officials had disputes with him. The surgeons that were hired to replace Quintessenza were lackluster in their techniques and mortality rates tripled in a period of two years.[19][20] Hospital officials decided to send complicated cardiac cases to other hospitals, but even routine cases also had very high mortality rates. After years of cover ups, officials at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore fired many top level hospital officials and the surgeons involved.[21][22] After a detailed investigation in 2019, the Florida Department of Health fined the institution $804,000. The fine was the most any Florida hospital had ever received.[23][24] The hospital has also settled with some of the 11 families affected by the program totaling around $40 million.[25] Administrators have announced that the hospital will implement new policies and structural changes to address the core issues that allowed the troubled heart program to continue. The hospital has since started to rebuild by hiring back Quintessenza, and hiring other respected pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons.[26][27]
Seeing those kids cry breaks my heart. From Maya going through these issues to the son seeing his mother hanging from the ceiling. They ruined these kids life. Never going to get back their mother!!!
My heart goes out to the family. Something has to be done about CPS And these hospitals. For false reports. They’re destroying people families and lives.
The sad thing is when they are actually called out for a reason, CPS does NOTHING. I just watched this new case of mom killing her 2 kids, her family members called CPS multiple times regarding the concerns about moms mental stability and they did nothing. Two kids are now DEAD.
Then again, there are tons of kids who SHOULD be removed from horrible homes and are not, then you hear about their deaths on the news or that they have been chained up for years. Social workers are overworked and underpaid. I agree this was a horrible overreach by people with a God complex. So happy this family was vindicated but so sad Beata had to sacrifice herself for them to be heard. Wishing them love and peace.🙏🙏🙏
I just watched the documentary on Netflix and at first, I was mad at her mom for deciding to do that and leaving her son and her daughter behind. But, now I realize that this is the way she got Maya home, she sacrificed herself for her child and her family even though that meant living without her. God bless this family!
Yes that’s exactly what she did… I think she might have known that she was going to do this before and wanted to see if the judge would allow her to “give her a hug” which in Beata’s mind was saying goodbye… or she just decided that day in court 💔
I watched the documentary on Netflix and never cried so hard. And then I saw this on my feed today. Justice, at last. for once. Some good news. This family deserves it.
The docu broke my heart, watched a couple of the cases after and as soon as I saw this I clicked on. Couldn't have been a better outcome for the family and the loss of their mom and wife
everything in this video broke my heart. The way maya's brother was just sobbing and hearing him weep like the little boy who just needs his mama but had to see her dead. maya rubbing her brothers back and both of them crying together and the sad sitting there crying listening to the jury. I hope all of them receive counseling for the trauma they have witnessed especially the brother for seeing his mother dead. Even in the documentary when Kyle runs to his room crying and his dad goes in hearing Kyle cry like that. It sounded like a cry from deep within. Like he had held it in all along and couldn’t keep it together anymore. Thankfully a lady (I can’t identify who but wearing green jacket) consoled Kyle and he just cried for a good 5 minutes with that lady rubbing his back. Probably didn’t replace his mom rubbing his shoulder but at least he was able to cry it all out and have people support him 💔😭
I watched the docu on NF after seeing this vid on my feed and also cried my eyes out watching it. The way their mom went out wrapping that last birthday gift was heartbreaking. She probably was thinking about how she would never wrap a present for her daughter and seeing her daughter open it up again.
Just finished watching the documentary and headed here to UA-cam to see the verdict for the first time. This shocking documentary opened my eyes to a world I did not know existed in hospitals. The pain and suffering that they put the Kowalski's through is nothing short of devastating. The perfect closure for this family is to have their mother back. Unfortunately we don't live in that world.I hope they found some closure to their story that will allow them to move on and at the same time never forget
This is UNPRECEDENTED! FINALLY... some ACTUAL justice. Now, instead of just giving the family lots of money, how about making the criminals who lead to this horrific tragedy pay for their crimes with some actual prison time or something ...
I was treated at All children’s before it was bought out by John’s Hopkins back in the very early 2000s. It was awful back then too. If only walls could talk. All I’ll say is that this is not the only horrible thing that happened unfortunately. I unfortunately will never get justice for the way I was treated while there, but it is incredibly relieving that Maya did and that the hospital staff’s inexcusably terrible behavior is finally being brought to light. I resonated with and felt so many of the words that she spoke. People would always paint JHAC as such a wonderful hospital and it’s simply not. It means everything to me and I’m sure many who are silent that the truth is finally being brought to light into the public eye.

I don't think any of them were looking for a hand out, they were traumatized and heart broken. Every time they used the word s*icide of their mother or talked about the false imprisonment of maya, kyle started to hyperventilate. Im so glad they got justice, but it will never be the same without their mom.😢
Crying with her. I just know how validating this is for Maya and her family. This is justice for them and Beata. Wishing them well for the future. They deserve this healing.
I watched the documentary and its the same judge in this trial that turned this family away the first time they tried to get this trial started and now he's watching them win against a major hospital. Justice is beautiful
It was the presentation of the case that didn’t specify the defendants properly and had conclusions from settled cases to take into account, therefore he couldn’t hear it. This judge actually did a pretty good job with what he was given.
this was the most emotional I've ever felt in any court case in the history of everything. didn't realize the court instructed parties to hold back emotions, it makes Maya's reaction all the more heart wrenching
It’s a ridiculous instruction considering how much pain guilty defendants cause. I hate it when families of murdered people are told not to react-totally unreasonable. I’m so happy the jury got it right in this case. No amount of money will fix their pain but it will help make their life a little more comfortable.
It just means you can't have an unreasonable outburst. It's a standard instruction for ALL verdicts being read and there is absolutely nothing wrong with the instruction. It's to maintain order and decorum in the court.
Oh god. That’s the saddest case I’ve heard. I’m so glad the hospital was sued, nobody deserved that neglect, poor poor Maya & the whole family. I hope they heal and find happiness.

Maybe, just MAYBE, for those diagnosed we won’t be seen as liars anymore.
part of why people aren't believed is because others lie. Those who lie hurts those who are being honest. This happens in any setting. Unfortunately not every person who walks into a hospital is being truthful.

Just horrific damage this hospital and staff did to this entire family. My heart is with this family as they begin to put the pieces of their lives back together and heal from this completely avoidable tragedy.
Pharmacist here who watched the trial. What JHACH did to this family is horrific. Our healthcare system is broken and the Kowalski story is, regrettably, only one example. It is my understanding that the main parties involved are still practicing and that should frighten everyone, especially after hearing their depos/testimonies. Not only did they NOT show remorse, they doubled down on their dereliction of duty.
It is terrifying. I have medical professionals in my family. My aunt Susan was a nurse at a hospital that had more wrongful death suits than a house has nails. And she was part of one of those cases. I’ve also had my fair share of bad experiences with hospitals in Arizona. Our healthcare is beyond broken.

Her dad and brother both had honest body language also. Maya will become someone who changes the world for the better. ❤
What did you think of the doctors? I kept thinking that everything they were complaining about had a logical explanation to it and maybe they were so stuck on their ideas they refused to believe that her mom wanted What was best.

In November 2018 it was revealed that the mortality rate in its pediatric heart surgery program was very high.

Good job maya. Your mom is very proud of u. Justice is served … this family deserve it. Shame on John Hopkins
NO ONE "deserves" 200 million from a freaking children's hospital.
@@Maspets it's to show the seriousness of their wrongdoings. They have insurance for that. It's not taking away from actual patients.
@@Maspetsthat’s literally the verdict of the court, namely, that she deserves compensation in the amount of $200million.
@@evenyou_brutus No I'm going to direct my anger right towards the greedy reptiles that are trying to get this money.
@@NiecieSavo Insurance cannot cover all of it according to Florida law, so that WILL affect other people who need this hospital. You really think their suffering is worth showing "seriousness" of wrongdoings? What about THEIR wrongdoing?
Beata should be so proud of her precious kids and husband. Thank you everyone who was part of this fight.
As someone who has been living with this condition diagnosed now for almost 14 years, I cried the moment that the jury sided with the Kowalski’s. It’s hard enough to get medical staff to believe you with this condition and for those of us who do have it things like this are always on our mind. I’ve lived, suffering for far too long. Maybe, just MAYBE, for those diagnosed we won’t be seen as liars anymore.
part of why people aren't believed is because others lie. Those who lie hurts those who are being honest. This happens in any setting. I think people need to understand that medical staff do get lied too, often for pain killers. So its hard to take everyone seriously and it hurts those who are being honest and truthful. Unfortunately not every person who walks into a hospital is being truthful.
As someone who lives with an undiagnosed condition, I felt for Maya when they treated her like it was all in her head or she was faking it... there are diagnosis' we didn't have 50 years ago that we do today. Just because you don't understand it doesn't mean it doesn't exist!
@@Skatejock21the thing about this case is, prior to going to this hospital, she had been treated and diagnosed by two specialists. SPECIALISTS that they ignored because they didn't understand or have the knowledge of her condition. That's why there are specialists.... Any doubt the hospital and others had should have been gone after speaking with her specialist. I understand bring precautions with kids, but cmon...
I totally agree with the problem. Medical personnel justice as phantom pain and we're making it up but yet there is an actual diagnosis for it but most are too ignorant to research it.
@@sh33na1icious Johns Hopkins hospital has an excellent reputation [not so much anymore, it seems], you’d think they had such specialists on staff or on call.
Thank you Netflix for helping to bring this to light as well

My thoughts as well 😢
I know... Her mom will not come back; however, having the relief of knowing they accept how horrifying they were, not dealing with them anymore, it's another level of peace. I hope acceptance and resignation come to their lives 😭
@@AlewithDiamonds They better be dealing with them. They need to fight this ridiculous ruling.
@@Maspets I know! I'm not from the US, however, this rule is so ridiculous, that they need to make a real investigation before making any decisions. This is all a misappropriated business, I hope they keep an eye on these cases in the future!
Hospitals need to be held accountable for wrongdoing and medical neglect.
So happy that Maya and her family prevailed against our medical system. What this family was put through is unimaginable for my brain.
It is terrifying they all have kept their licenses to practice .
These RIDICULOUS judgements are what's broken.
@@mcrchickenluvr And those cases won't see anything close to this ridiculous absurd judgement.
I've seen no evidence that our entire system is broken. That seems like a ridiculous claim. It's far from perfect, but it's not broken.
I just saw documentary on Netflix with my grandson & we both were in tears😢😢😢for this family! So happy to see they received Justice! So heartbreaking!🥺🥺🙏🏻
How is a bunch of money justice? It's acknowledgement, but it's not justice.
I sure hope she actually received every single penny of that money and it isn’t drawn out for the next 20 years. I am autistic and have to read body language to understand whether I’m being manipulated or lied to. This girls testimony was the most honest I’ve seen from anyone.
@@TheresaHall-vl1bm did you read up on the case? How it got to this point ?
I agree. I hope the family makes it their purpose to continue this work.
When a person in power has a huge ego, look out. They’ll ruin your life with no remorse. This is the kind of justice so many people deserve but never get. I hope this case brings about some serious change.
Amen!
I am weeping for this family as I watch this. As someone who was incredibly close to this story when it occurred and have watched countless families be torn apart by this abomination of a medical facility, I'm so grateful the justice system finally did right by this sweet family.
This poor family! They aren’t breaking down over the amount they have been awarded by the jury, they broke down when the verdict of “guilty” was announced and for the validation they just received from this jury. They weren’t in it for the money, they were in it for validation and Justice!! So happy they prevailed. Not an easy feat against a huge corporation.
Yes! Exactly this.
So true! We live in a capitalist society and the way to get the attention of a large corporations and sectors is through such large punitive damages.
Yes, exactly! Justice was served today! ⚖️💗
God be this family.
THIS. They reacted WAY more to the guilty verdicts than they did to the amounts. They deserved this validation.
I’m so happy for them I was crying with them!!! God bless the family and attorneys who helped them.
Their lawyers 'helped' them?? Do you realize the % they take off the top of the winnings?

I am in the medical field and I was appalled at the behavior of the social workers and she deserves everything but still sad about the price she paid losing her mom..many prayers for her.
A special thought for the son, who had to let his parents focus on the sister and probably as any family lack of attention while all this was happening

Soooo happy for her! She has saved so many families from being separated! Thank you Maya for your courage!!!🙏💪🏽💗
Her wonderful mother saved them too❤️
That hospital should've been shut down years ago. This is not the first case, there are hundreds if not thousands of cases like this. My heart goes out to this family. What an incredible amount of strength and courage and faith to go through this process. God bless.
They will just move all the staff somewhere else. They should take all their licences
It's John Hopkins, you know. They are untouchable! This case won't hurt them a bit, they will just go on with it, worldwide!
Unfortunately John Hopkins does have a great deal of good doctors, and nurses. I think they just met the bad ones, and also that social worker is the worst. But Jon Hopkins has done amazing things to help sick kids, I think there are unfortunately arrogant doctors who end up there because it has such a high reputation.. I'm glad this case broke this open, and now Jon Hopkins will force change and hopefully this won't happen again...
evidence of the thousands of cases?
I recently read about Josie King. They helped her recover so well and yet she died at 18 months from dehydration!
This whole thing was so heartbreaking! I have so much respect to all those who didn't give up on this family!
This will never replace the loss of her mother, but I am happy that justice was served for this family.

If you’ve seen the documentary Take Care of Maya, they actually feature a few families, some that the horrific nurse Bedy had contact with but all that JH handled at some point. This is well served justice for those families as well. I’m keeping all of those children and their parents in my prayers. This is well deserved for them as well. A HUGE win.
In 84 days they destroyed a family.
Happens more than anybody wants to recognize. The medical industry is dangerous.
Social worker, doctors, nurses and administrators at the hospital, those individuals should be prosecuted!!
Unfortunately the hospital will just pay out using there insurance, and carry on as usual. There needs to be criminal charges bought on the staff of the hospital
I think this has open the door for criminal charges
Well as far as Mayas concerned she got compensated, so if anyone is suing the staff in a criminal fashion it's the hospital.
At least now everyone knows how horrible this hospital is. Now everyone knows to never bring their kids to this hospital.
@@MISTAKEWASMADE4liveit's too bad the police won't get involved and put them in jail.
@@AliceBowie Actually as shown in the Netflix movie the police did "investigate" on behalf of JHCH, by "investigate", I meam try to illegally intimidate Jack into a false confession. I don't know if that was shown to the court, but it most certainly contributed to the guilty verdict.
