How to replace the trunk wiring harness on a VW CC

- This video shows you how to replace the decklid or trunk wiring harness on a 2013 and similar VW CC.
The part number for the wiring harness is 3C8-971-182-G. I got mine from ShopDAP.com for $91.57 in October 2020.

Thank you for the video. Your video made it possible for me to fix the issue myself. My '14 CC had intermittent issues with the trunk not opening with the key fob, door, and rear hatch. The rear lights were working fine. I ordered the OEM wire harness from FCP Euro. Here are my suggestions:
1. Definitely wear cut proof gloves. This will keep your hands from being cut by the sharp/rigid plastics.
2. I highly recommend using Nylon Pry Bar set (Harbor Freight). Metal screw driver will destroy the tabs. These tools allowed me to unlatch the 4 connectors located in the driver's side rear fender. I used the nylon pry bar to remove the connectors from the chassis. I also used the nylon pry bar to push into the connector. This released the connection tab to release the male plug. Nylon pry bars were also used to remove the tabs located throughout the lid of the trunk and the carpeted wall.
3. I removed the trunk lid liner completely. Remember to take a picture of the manual trunk release for reference.
4. Instead of removing the wiring completely, I pulled through the disconnected wiring harness from the bottom to top (trunk lid). Once the wiring harness was out, I disconnected the old connectors from the trunk lid and plugged the new connectors as I went along.
5. I was able to feed the 4 connectors into the rear quarter by using a blue tape to wrap the wires together. The wires were strong enough to feed without issues.
I was able to put the panel pieces back without issues. Remember, do not force too much when working with the body panels. The metal clips for the trunk lid does move laterally, so be mindful when reinstalling them. I had to adjust few of my metal clips to line up with the slit/hole.

Thanks so much for this! I was able (as a 30 something woman with no knowledge of car mechanics) to do this myself in under an hour. I even used my hair tie to feed the wires through and a cuticle pusher to help get all the clips apart hahaha. Problem solved!!

@@othmanxNot sure if you have done yours yet or not but just finished mine and it took about an hour but not that hard. Just need to be careful not to break the plastic pieces in the trunk liner (broke both of mine).

Good job explaining and thanks for the good lighting. To fish the lines back down into the trunk, I used a tool to take the trunk lid off of the arm. It made fishing the lines a ton easier. I had no problems taking the old line out, where you said the little plastic pieces stuck, I just pulled the other way, no snags. All in all, a one hour fix. Cost about $100 for the cable. Who knows what it would’ve cost to get it fixed. Thanks again.
how did you take trunk lid off the arm? i'm stuck at this step. afraid to do anything hasty cuz the wiring harness is delicate.

Thanks for this video. I replaced my trunk harness and my trunk started working again on my 2012 VW CC. Yet, the trunk lights are still not working, my dash still shows the trunk open when it's closed, and I'm unable to lock my doors from the inside of the car. Any advice you can give? Thanks
Same problem happened to my 2015 cc. After 3 hours diagnosis by dealer ship and they pointed out the causes was due to trunk wire harness failure. Guess how much they gonna charge me.Up to 1500 bucks. And this not the end. That price is just for harness replacement. They say this is just the first step for the further inspection. Now I’ve picked up my car back trying to do this myself .
Thanks Chris! Just did this on my 2013 CC using your video. Very good walk-through of the process. I had some difficulty figuring out how to thread the new harness into the hinge pipe since it isn’t visible, but the socket on string idea helped a bit.

Thanks for this Chris...my 2014 CC 4motion started giving me the check rear blub and my backup camera went out. Turns out its the wiring harness. My dealer wanted 520 just for labor,..... paid $98 for the harness (3c8971182J) it has 5 connectors one more connector (blue) next to the rear right side bulb connector for the camera. Starting to get this problem on my 2010, the trunk wont open from the outside latch. I straightened out the wires and it works ,but now the onboard computer is telling me the rear side light is out...and it is not... obviously theres more broken wires, i guess ill have to try again

I need to do this exact same thing on a 2015 VW Polo hatchback, and curious if anyone knows where the connectors to the wiring harness are at the car end. Roof? C-pillar?
The wiring harness goes through to tailgate near the roof, but I don’t want to disassemble panels, and risk breaking something, where I don’t need to.
Just what l needed bro ; my rear camera wont work when slamming the boot lol

Make sure you run it from the top to the bottom. The smaller plugs that end up inside the trunk have to be the ones fed thru the tube. If you try and feed the larger plugs thru the other way, they won’t fit. I even taped all of the smaller ones tightly around the harness wiring (using electrical tape) before fishing them thru, just so nothing got caught up while being fished thru.
I have a 2014 3.6 engine. I suppose the harness would be the same? Does anyone have the part number?

There’s a different part number for the harness with 5 plugs, which is the one you need if you have a backup camera. I think that part number is already listed here in another comment.
I have a 2013 cc as well, with the same issue. Waiting on my harness to be delivered. I just recently replaced my mirror switch as the knob broke off. Did you notice while your wiring harness was broke if the rear mirror dimming worked or not? I wonder if its related or if its another problem.
I didn’t notice if the rear view mirror dimming worked or not, but I don’t think that’s related. There are only 4 connections on the harness (2 for the lights, 1 for the remote trunk release latch, and 1 for the VW logo decklid release latch), so not sure how the mirror/dimming would be related. I’ve already done the driver’s side door mirror switch and have a video on that one as well on UA-cam. Good luck with the rear view mirror.

May i ask how you attached your rear view camera?
Our 2013 does not have a backup camera. For vehicles with a backup camera, there is a different wiring harness which has an extra connection/plug for the backup camera.
I tried running my harness through the cylinder tune and the first connector seems to be stuck on something inside. This happen to anyone?

Depends on which bulb needs to be replaced but they’re all done similarly. Determine what bulb needs to be replaced, remove the old bulb, and replace with a new bulb. If it’s one of the bulbs on the outside edge of the CC, you’ll replace it thru the inside of the trunk rectangular opening. If it’s one of the bulbs on the trunk lid, you’ll replace it thru the rectangular opening on the inside of the trunk lid. If you have LED bulbs instead of halogen bulbs, it will be a similar process and done thru the same locations. Just the bulb housings will be different. Just turn/twist the bulb housing to remove it, then replace the bulb, then turn/twist the housing back into place.

No our car didn’t have the backup camera. Some of the CCs do, and that’s a different wiring harness & part number with 1 more connector than ours had.

I have a 2010 cc. The older shape. Is yhe harnes the same for all models?

Yes, the 2008-2012 model (VW Passat CC) is the same as the 2012-2018 model (called only VW CC)
1:36 Those are plastic screws. Remove them with a hex driver. Do not pry them. Or you'll end up destroying all of them like I did.
I pried all of them and had no issues. You only pry out the center/middle section and not the entire plastic clip.
And the dealer charges 700 bucks to do this job
