At last a deeper dive into this product by someone who knows what they are talking about rather than the superficial unboxing videos where they act like a kid in a candy store. Whilst the 2021 Apple TV seem a good option, lack of HD audio pass-through is a no go for me. Hopefully Nvidia announce a revised model for 2022, addressing the frame rate issue and offer updated hardware and a beefier processor. Until then think I'll wait. Thanks for the vid.

Yes Apple TV can only play up to 24 bit and 48 khz. for an iPhone Can you, however, buy an external DAC? there are probably those who say you must have a specific streamer to listen to hi-res music. But there should be receivers that can do that too

I bought the Nvidia Shield Pro because of the Plex server. I had it setup and working fine, until one day it just stopped working. I had to remove the app and reinstall (a few times). I went back to using a mac mini as my server. The streaming works great for the most part, I get HDR and Atmos when available. Everything is smooth and looks great. After the last update, it freezes, can't resume hulu streams, force reboots.....I was thinking about getting the Apple tv 4k 2nd gen just because of this frustration. I really hope they can get this stuff sorted out.

I own both (Apple TV 4K & Shield TV Pro) . The Shield for about 6 month and swich from one to the other from time to time. For me the Apple TV 4K is better. For some reason, the shield loses the
Dolby Vision and I have to reboot the shield to bring it back. It happens watching movies to Disney Channel. No issues with the Apple 4K TV.

All I heard was tons of instructions for the NVidia Shield. That’s why I chose AppleTV, it just works.
I bought one for my mom who is 76, and to this day, she hasn’t called me ones for problems, it just works. (She calls me every week for any other electronics, except this one)
    It works.

I have the Apple 4K TV, the new model, and I love it. But I only use it for streaming but it's fast and easy to use and I love how it adds all your watch into a last watched timeline for easy selection, however if they redesign the Shield TV 'Pro' I would add that too for the game streaming and native games, because I've had several before and had a collection. Don't have a Shield TV currently.

Wow. Without auto frame matching, how is the Shield Pro considered as the best? I understand this is not supported at OS level for anything older than Android TV 12, but this is just unacceptable. I was planning to buy one, believe it or not today, and knowing it lacks this very important feature, I am cancelling my plan.

I think for the average user who couldn’t care less about frame matching or lag not even know what it is, then it might be ok for them. For a home theater enthusiast though, I’ve come to hate using the NVIDIA Shield Pro over the past few years (even as a PLEX or Emby machine, it stinks). And it’s to the point now where I feel an updated video might be necessary because I just can’t recommend this thing at all these days.

Great content! Indeed the biggest issue at the moment the Shield has is no auto frame rate option, the beta frame rate detector gives issues with my AV receiver, stops the content on the Shield and force me to change it manually. Hope they introduce this feature in the near future, then the Shield should be perfect.

Hello! I need your help please.
    My setup is
Client: Shield TV Pro (via ethernet to router)
Server is my desktop: with R5 3500, 5700XT (via ethernet connected to a Mesh node; direct connection not possible)
    Max internet speed: 400 Mbps
I cannot stream higher than 720p. Is the Mesh connection really a problem? Am I hopeless and waste~300 USD? Or do I need to change some settings?

This device is a shit storm. I’ve had jt for 18 months and it’s been nothing but absolute shite, then they added more ads to the home screen. Look at the used market, people are giving them away. If you didn’t want gamestream, forgot jt, if you want fast WiFi, forget it, if you want non invasive monitoring, forget it, steady framerate? Forget it, reliable Plex server with nas storage? Nope. readily available apps for more than the big 4? Nope.
    Garbage pile device.

Time for a new video. Xbox series x vs nvidia shield. I have an xsx and I'm trying out plex for the first time with some 4k movies, but I'm getting lots of buffering even tho everything is wired. So I'm considering getting a nvidia shield. Both atmos and dolby vision is important to me

I got this and the Apple TV 4K and the shield is just so buggy compared to Apple TV. I always had to force close streaming apps on the shield. I have no experience with the gaining side of the shield. But I will say that when the shield does work, the upscaling is really nice. It’s not worth the price in my opinion.

So I'm looking to get started with either an HTPC or an Nvidia Shield. Kinda leaning toward rhe HTPC. I would like to have digital 1-1 rips of my movies, to have my music available like in a NAS, and access to my content anywhere like with a PLEX server.
Does that just makes sense to go HTPC or is there something I missed that still leaves the Shield as an option?

    • @skippyturtle1
      @skippyturtle1 2 роки тому +1

you can go with the shield pro, setup the plex server on it and point the server at a NAS to stream your movies and music. Some NAS can have plex server installed on them and then you just need the plex app on your TV or streaming device to access it. Either way you will need a PC to rip your movies. If you don't mind leaving a power hungry PC on all of the time (even a 65w CPU eats up a lot of energy, plus video card, fans, lights...) I have a mac mini as my plex server, it use to be my HTPC, but the hassle of a keyboard plus remotes was too much.

Since this video is a year old now and I'm still using the Shield TV Pro, I can honestly say that I have a serious LOVE/HATE relationship with this thing. As a PLEX server it's just ok, but often I still have to deal with stuttering and movies stopping, even with an SSD plugged directly into the Shield. It's like it can't handle it. As a streaming box, I find it completely unusable and never use it for any streaming. My Apple 4K TV or even the internal WebOS apps on my LG C1 do a much better job than the Shield TV Pro. I DO NOT recommend buying this for anything other than PLEX.

    • @HomeTheaterGamer

I personally wouldn’t call it the best streaming device. I only use mine for PLEX. For streaming Netflix, Hulu, HBOMAX, etc., the Apple 4K TV is my preferred device due to automatic frame rate switching, something the Shield Pro STILL doesn’t do well in 2023 outside of PLEX or Kodi. Not everyone will care about matching the frame rate to the source, but for those that do and don’t need PLEX functionality the Shield Pro isn’t the best device in that regard.

@@HomeTheaterGamer You're both right and both wrong - because rickdurro1091 is very likely talking about streaming games while you are talking about streaming netflix et al.
