I live in Newfoundland, and never knew this mans name until his album with Bob Pollard. And I'm so glad I discovered him. He's like a US Nick Lowe, in the best way.
Same for me, the Keene Brothers album (Pollard/Keene), one of the finest rock/power pop albums i've ever heard, made me a huge fan of TK. Tommy wrote the music for every song on that album but Pollards superior singing and lyrics made it a classic.
Tommy IS my all time favorite. Met him 32 years ago. Gave me a signed set list after watching him at Nightstage in Boston Mass. We were friends with his Road manager /Soundman. Great times! I was so enamored by Tommy! Ended up able to communicate with him years later on facebook. It was so great to be able to just chat with my favorite musician! What Great times! Miss Youu TK
Here it is 2024 and still listening to this guy. I recently read an old Mike Mills interview where he said Peter Buck is the greatest arpeggio guitar player ever. I absolutely love R.E.M., but sorry Mike... Tommy is tops for me. Wish he were still with us.
Saw Tommy many, many times years ago in the Washington DC area when he was with The Razz. What a band! And what a song writer was Tommy Keene. Good times sorely missed attending those LIVE shows almost weekly in my youth.
@@markeggins890 I agree with that guy in the news clip. There are some great Razz songs here on youtube from the TK years. Check out Hippy, Hippy Shakes and Love is Love from their LIVE EP called Air Time. ENJOY. You'll see a photo of TK, too, from the EP's back cover. Also a studio song co-written by TK: The Razz - You Can Run (But You Can't Hide)
Yeah, this may be Tommy's catchiest yet!No one can string together a power-pop song quite like Tommy, even Robert Pollard can't quite match him in that particular area.
Agreed, I am saddened to only be learning of Tommy Keene, after his death. I recall feeling I'd missed something special when I first discovered Roy Orbison (at the time of his death), as well. There is so much talent, so many gifted people whose stars rise early and then - though they never lose that gift - their stars fade away.. and, ever so many more talents who quietly produce years and years of great music or art, largely unnoticed by the Media and obscure to all save a few acolytes. When I was in college, I became friendly with a fellow who was, essentially, a one-man-band: James played small venues throughout St. Louis and East St. Louis, backing himself up on guitar and drum-machine, playing both lead and rhythm guitar, singing original and cover Rock, R&B, Jazz Fusion, Soul...he was a remarkable, innovative, powerful musical artist, who - so far as I am aware - was never lifted from obscurity. He was not handsome, not charming, not clever. He was, though, a musical genius. Though we are celebrating the life of Tommy Keene, here's to you, as well, James...wherever you are.
That last pair he had were freebies from Moog that said Moog on the side. He was also known for having one pair of shoes that were his ride or die's. When they wore out, he'd get a new pair - slip on leathers.

As someone who knew him in childhood and after, Tommy was a really good guy. Always.
Such a gifted individual. Always gracious at shows.
Man. I miss him so much

Awesome, not only is he a songwriting genius, he is such a kind human being as well.

Saw a news clip when TK died and one guy said the Razz were one of the best bands he had ever seen.

@@iconadams Cheers, they were pretty rockin' for sure!
long live power pop!!
I miss you buddy...everyday. Sure wish you were still around. I'd probably be on my way over now. If you were up...You did like your sleep.
Rest in Peace Tommy Keene. He passed away in his sleep peacefully on November 22, 2017.
Simply one of the best songs. Trumpet reminds me of Byrds' "So You Want to Be a Rock n Roll Star"

Robert Pollard, Bob Mould, Paul Westerberg, Matthew Sweet, Peter Buck, The Goo Goo Dolls can't be wrong, Tommy is a genius!
Terrific song, thanks Tommy, glad I got to see you at least playing with Paul Westerberg and the Replacements.

Tommy always had the best taste in sunglasses....

Thinking of you tonight Tommy,
He's great! what year is the Cadu ?
That’s the 1986 Fleetwood Brougham originally owned by my grandfather, Al Bourdet Sr. I’m glad it’s immortalized in this vid.
Tommy Keene fucking rules!

See you tomorrow night Tommy! 10/18/16
Great song, great talent.... STUPID video

Brad was in Japan so R. Walt Vincent (who mixed the album) filled in.
