Uh oh! You referred to beekeeping as a *hobby*. A few videos back, you suggested that it's not really a hobby, as you can't walk away and come back at a time convenient to the beekeeper. 😁
Speaking of the bee work load , it seems to me that 12 hives are a little more work than 3 hives but having all these hives means more and different resources that more widely available that saves you time and money and gas money. An example if you need to requeen a hive you are much more likely to have a queen cell available in 11 hives than 2 hives. Same with brood frames or pollen/honey frames. Once set up really doesnt seem to take long
im starting my bee journey this coming spring, ive seen honey bees in my garden. should i be concerned? do i need to do anything with my beginning bees when i get them?
Great question, you should consider asking it on my livestream this Thursday night at 7pm central time. The answer could help so many others. Here's the link: ua-cam.com/users/livejAT5M7FJXTs
I love your channel! I don’t miss an episode. Quick question- I have 4 hives. I know it’s the dearth, but my bees have become unusually aggressive. If I walk near the hive, they sting me. Is this normal?
I'm not sure where you live, but let's same not in an area where africanized bees are NOT possible. Bees just have more to protect and they are foraging less. Happens to us all. If you live where africanized bees do to, then be concerned and seek help to replace that queen.
I'm in my first year of beekeeping and I've benefited immensely from hundreds of your videos. To try to learn as quickly as possible, I defaulted to watching your videos at 1.75x speed (just to save some time). After months and months at 1.75x, I've become conditioned to your voice sounding normal at that speed. Now, if I accidentally start a video at normal playback speed, you sound like you are drowsy or speaking in slow motion 🤦🏻. If I ever get the chance to meet you in person, I may not recognize your natural voice 😂. Hopefully you appreciate the humor in this. Thanks David.
No, I get it. I don't watch beekeeping videos, but I watch other videos and I do the same thing. I get it. But sometimes I like watching someone at normal speed just because I may be just listening while I work. But I get it!
Don’t quit is the best advice. Beekeeping is the most challenging thing I’ve ever willingly done, and guys, that says a lot because I’m married to a redhead. DONT GIVE UP!
I bought your winter bee kind for my two hives. Just got one question... Do they come with feeder boxes or do I need to buy separate boxes to put on top of my deep for both hives?
Today I noticed some bees leaving the beehive with pupae, they didn't just drop it off and went back in. It appeared as if they were trying to leave with them... As if robbing baby bees... Is that a thing? Do bees rob baby bees from other hives?
It is likely that your colony is pulling out drone larvae/pupae. It's that time of year when they no longer need male drones. Not only do they push out adult drones, but they drag out drone pupae and larvae.
@@beek very interesting. I also noticed the pupae they were carrying out had verroa mites. Some of the guard bees also had mites visible while I was staring at the entrance. I'll do a full inspection tomorrow. My hive is in Chicago, I see bees coming in with pollen every day still. Thank you very much for the answer, I really appreciate it. I have only had bees this summer, I enjoy all the information and knowledge from your channel.
I have a new hive that has very lil honey in a single deep and I've been feeding all summer. I was just checking to see if you think they will survive the winter and what can I do to help them survive
David. Hello from central Texas. What a great channel with so many informational videos. Brand new to Beeking with a small colony in a seven frame, two deep Apimaye hive. Looking forward to taking your online courses soon. Thanks for "beeing" an excellent teacher.
i have a question . i can feed my two hives 2 gallons of sugar syrup a day...now i have a hive thats two brood boxes and two supers full of honey and brood filled in brood boxes with honey also...every box is filled with bees even the supers..just started this hive first year from a package...should i take that last super off...? for winter...and when should that be done...?
Hi David, I've been feeding my bees for a few weeks now. Here in middle Tennessee the dearth started late June. My question is about feeding and mite treatments. Weather
I'm in Puerto Rico where it's warm all year around. I feed 1:2 syrup because in warm weather 1:1 gets moldy very rapidly. Is there anything I can add to 1:1 syrup which does not harm the bees but avoids mold? A 1 gallon feeder lasts about 2 weeks in the hive. Or should I just feed 1:2 all the time?
Have you tried bringing the water to a boil for a few minutes. Then add sugar and bring back to a simmer, and immediately remove from heat. I have to do that with hummingbird feeders.
I missed the live stream. I love the training hive, I'm teaching my grandsons about beekeeping and also have a grandson who is a boy scout who is learning about insects for a merit badge. I wish they weren't so expensive to purchase.
Every time i try to open, it sparks a robbing frenzy. Once, it started after only 45 seconds. I simply can't inspect anymore. Was able to stop quickly but i don't have any way to inspect so... not sure what to do.

I know, right. Can't break old habits I guess.
Thank you from TN
Love your videos
How about using Pseudoscorpions to help with varroa mites?
Fade that never went anywhere. Chelifers, some studies suggest, are removed from the hive by the bees.

Thanks so much, love this channel. I have help from a 86 year old bee keeper with 72 years of having hives but your information gives me insight.
Glad to help

You need to use your own boxes above the feeders.
Today I noticed some bees leaving the beehive with pupae, they didn't just drop it off and went back in. It appeared as if they were trying to leave with them... As if robbing baby bees... Is that a thing? Do bees rob baby bees from other hives?

What is your advice on dealing with honey supers that are not capped over? Do you store them somehow, for feeding later?
Yes, freeze and store.
Hi David, I've been feeding my bees for a few weeks now. Here in middle Tennessee the dearth started late June. My question is about feeding and mite treatments. Weather
So I still have supers on (2 each hive) the bees will store sugar water in with the honey, thanks
I’ve heard of spoiling your bees, but come on. An old analog TV built into one of the frames?😂
My good friend Dr. Jon Zawislak made that one for me.
@@beek excellent!

Feed less quantity like 2.5 Liters will be gone before it gets mold

Swarming is what would make me quit beekeeping.
Elaborate please.
Thanks!

Starting to cool down here in Golden Valley Arizona
Finally
Thanks David
i love the rice krispies treats
What is the best way to determine if you have 70 - 80 pounds of honey for the winter?
You can lift the back of the hive to feel the weight.
