- In this livestream we're shooting out 2 LEGENDARY vintage synthesizers of the 80's: the Roland JX-3P and the Oberheim Matrix 6. Both of these analog synths are a pleasure in their own right, but tonight we'll settle once and for all which is the King of the DCO synthesizers! 👑

JX3P was the new poly I couldn't afford in the '80s. 40 years later I have a Matrix 6, but every time I see a 3P, I time travel back to my youth. Great job on the comparison. Now you have me looking at the Alpes Machines programmer for the Oberheim.
I just don't think I can spend that much on a programmer.
Wou.... Amazing Comparison ... It was especially interesting to listen to the difference in resonance color
@41:47 actually it's on the Juno-60 HPF that there are 4 steps but on the Juno-6 the HPF is a continuous adjustment 😌
Ahhh thank you for the correction
I`ve got JX-3P with PG-200 and Oberheim Matrix6R + original OB-Xk MIDI controller💪🎵
Nice!!
Never had a OB6, they were hard to get in the UK, but I did have a JX3P but sold it for a DX9 (not a 7) what was I thinking !!! Great video
OMG for a DX9? hahahaha that one hurts
Oberheim 1000 and 6/6R owner here. I prefer the Oberheim sound. Great synth collection by the way.
Thank you! I think most of us eventually ended up preferring the Oberheim - although they were close and both synths sounded amazing.
These were great synths to compare. I think the Matrix won most of the comparisons to me.
Both incredible but yes - the Matrix sounds so good!
Two great Scumthesizers!
...I have both of these!
They're both awesome and yes, scummy af 😂
18:38 - I'm not sure, but I think someone said that the Matrix-6R has two quartz oscillator crystals, and the 1000 has only one... because of this, the Matrix-1000 seems to sound more like digital, but in the Matrix-6R there is a slight detune due to two crystals, and because of this the sound is more analog... but this is not accurate))
The Matrix-6 uses 3 crystals instead of just one in the 1000. The main difference is not the detuning, which is inherently nonexistant, but the fact that the oscillators are not all locked in phase - which usually sounds awful when used in unison or when stacking voices.
@Roboami ahhhh I see
@33:27 don't forget the 12 voice 24 oscillator Super JX-10 😁
Would love love love to get my hands on a JX-10 one day
@@VultureCulture yes I have one along with a Juno-6 and JP-8000...I run the JX-10 through a Boss Pro SE-50 (amazing collection of retro stereo effects) and it's insanely smooth and rich...have the Vecoven 3.xx mod...the prices for them are very reasonable! I also recently got the Retroakiv MPG-8 for it and it's so much fun tweaking the split layers :D
@@VultureCulture I got my JX10 in a flight case for $900 and threw the Vecoven mod in it… You should definitely hunt one down because they really are quite reasonable considering how powerful they are. Out of about 40 vintage analog synths I have, it and the DW8000 are my two favorites.
@RobertWrightOneManCovers I definitely want to check one out sometime!
I have a JX3P with the new (and seemingly completely unknown) Kiwi Matrix mod coming from Japan. The new Matrix mod fixes the eg issues that everyone had with the original Kiwi. A JX3P with a 29 source / 40 destination mod matrix with 3 egs, 3 lfos, pwm, etc etc. Pretty excited to get that. That Matrix 6 filter does sound really nice and juicy though. But I got the JX3P with upgrade and programmer for pretty crazy cheap and significantly cheaper than the Matrix 6 with a programmer.
That's awesome! Let me know how it goes - I hear mixed reviews from the Kiwi stuff but that could just be the snobs!
@@VultureCulture Yeah, the big negative thing I heard about the original Kiwi 3P was it changed the egs and therefore the character. But they addressed that and it's supposed to be fixed. I've always liked the sound of the JX3P better than most of Roland's more expensive models but it didn't do enough for me to justify keeping it. BUT a 3 lfo / 3 eg version with proper pwm sounds mighty cool. We'll see. Sometimes synth specs on paper sound amazing and end up still disappointing. Hopefully it won't be too much longer. It's coming along with an SK50D from the same Japanese dealer. His stuff is usually great but can take a while.
@VincentPresley Man people are really weird about the Kiwi stuff. You would think it would be mostly a no brainer.
Apparently the 8P one does not program nicely and not all worth it but the rest seem great. I think I'm going to try the one for the Alpha Juno 2(MKS-50)
I have a Matrix 6r and a jx3p with a dtronics programmer. Overall, I like the jx3p better since editing is far easier with the programmer. I think the Matrix is a deeper synth overall (more options).
That's a good way to say it.
What would be a mini OB6 on a budegt lieka Minifreak oro maybee?
I don't think there's an analog equivalent of the OB-6 for cheaper unfortunately. Hydra explorer is probably the closest but it's all digital.
Meant the Matrix 6 to be sure but yes also thinkt not much around maybe. HYdrasynth I have read its also similar to old Ensoniqu SQ series a bit? @@VultureCulture
@lofimat3856 Honestly they're not very similar. I think software will get you closer to the vintage sound if you want that Oberheim or Ensoniq thing. If you want a more general sound the Behringer DM12 and Sequential Take Five are my go to recommendations. If you want vintage you're not going to find quality cheaper than a JX-3P or Matrix 6
Thankyou for info broi!! @@VultureCulture
the jx3p has internal trimmers to increase the resonance
Nice! I didn't know that!
the matrix 6 typically goes for a thousand dollars, but the jx3p goes for a THOUSAND dollars, so keep that in mind. 😂
