You forgot to mention it also supports flight sticks like the HOTAS T-Flight 4 on PS4. Playing in VR with the flight stick is by far the most immersive way to fly. But even without the extra gadgets it's still a good time. Yeah. I think if they make a sequel, it will expand a lot of things that this game didn't get quite right. They made a lot of weird decisions that I don't quite understand. Like, for instance, having you create a pilot for multiplayer. Who cares? The pilot is largely irrelevant to the gameplay experience and the game doesn't really acknowledge your pilot at all. Meanwhile, the game forces you to choose two largely pre-fab characters for the single player mode and that doesn't factor into the story at all either. They need to do what Wing Commander did and feature a protagonist who is your avatar but isn't "you". That way the character can have full voice and lines. This will give them the ability to tell a legitimate story and not have the NPCs sitting around monologging. Or they can just just do like Xwing did and not represent your character in the game world at all. You are you, but you are never seen or heard.
I wish more time had been devoted to the VR implementation such as which platform, motion sickness etc., whether the game is still fun without VR. Otherwise great review.
Yeah i gotta agree this is definitely a good game. The variety is a bit disappointing however if they plan on adding in more stuff over time i can totally see this being a 9/10 instead of an 8/10. Although for my score i'd be in the middle with a 8.5/10.
is it just me or is EA killing it with Star Wars games nowadays? cause Battlefront 2 improved years after its release, Jedi Fallen Order was a great return to form for a narrative-driven star wars game and now Squadrons is proving itself to be a great flight and dogfight simulator.
It's a real shame they screwed the PC port in a way. It's got a weird refresh/fps issue where it feels capped at 60 fps, with screen tearing and laggy gameplay even on high end rigs with high refresh rate monitors. There's no headtracking support either, for peripherals like Track IR or Freetrack etc which are a staple of the flight simming community for over a decade now, many of which flew X-Wing/TIE Fighter back in the day. It's made even worse given this title has full VR support, so the hard work is already done, makes no sense for it to be left out. There's also a "deadzone" issue on joysticks/HOTAS, which again is frustrating when they were touting how it would have full HOTAS support. That aside though, I'm having a LOT of fun flying in the game. I haven't touched multiplayer yet, been enjoying the story. I know they stated that there would be no further development for this title, however if that holds up it would a criminally wasted opportunity. So many ship types to add, endless campaign options. The original X-Wing game had about 4 or 5 campaigns in total IIRC, so just having the one, at I think just six missions per faction is a bit of a let down. However, I've enjoyed the mixed perspective and actually getting to fly as the Imperials, instead of them chickening out to the Rebels after two missions like in SWBF2.
I wonder which would go down as the bigger "Killer App" for VR in 2020: Half Life Alyx for its high-quality FPS campaign, gravity gloves usage, and immersive horror.... or Squadrons for its nerd dream-come-true premise of a Star Wars cockpit experience.
@Matthew Johnston I have little experience in VR and don't own hardware, but I'm personally craving Alyx most because I heard its a 10/10 game and I miss the HalfLife universe. I just think the Star Wars brand has an easy 1-sentence pull to the general public when it comes to convincing them to dive into VR. Kids and Casuals don't care as much for "critical darlings" in gaming. Kinda like the Wii Remote becoming a lightsaber (even tho no game took full advantage of that dream).
I thought the characters were very cardboard with little effort put into their personal lives. Especially on the empire it's a lot of 'we're so evil harhar.' Maybe I was expecting too much there. But the rest of the game is rilly cool.
I think it really has to do with where your gaming history lies. This game is a spiritual sequel to the X-Wing series of games which had no crew interactions at all. So from that perspective, this is a huge step into that arena for this franchise. But compared to X-Wing's spiritual predecessor, Wing Commander, the Crew interactions are extremely weak. And this is largely a factor of budget, I'm sure. In Wing Commander, (with the same general interface) between missions you could go to the bar and talk to the crew as well as meet them in specific areas of the ship if they asked you to. (Like their quarters.) It's NOT an RPG and I think a lot of people expected that. But that's why there are Star Wars RPGs. But I think that a sequel will, if it's ever made, expand on those areas. @@JazGalaxy An actual normal reply. Thank you for that. The weird thing is that I have played X-wing vs TIE Fighter back in the day, and for some reason in my memory the dark side seemed almost convincingly real which is what I hope for in a bad guy. But maybe, probably, that's because I was very young back then. Maybe they will expand on it at some point. I definitely don't 'need' it. But the way they implemented it now, personally, it felt more like a downside of the game than adding something to it. But of course that is very subjective and I recognise and respect that they put in the effort that they did. I just wouldn't have put it in, unless the writing was better. Do you know how in open world games they create a much deeper history of the world and culture of the world than what ultimately ends up in the game? They create an environment and then look at what would logically grow there and what path people would have walked to create roads and such. It results in a more lived-in sensation. Like it's more real. And I feel like they simply didn't do this with these characters. They feel almost out of place to me. Like nobody took the time to write down their history from childhood to the position they have now, and what they would have seen up to this point and how it would alter their posture and mental state and the way they view each other. I think it would have made the interactions much more awesome.
@@lystic9392 In ways I agree. I think most of the in-flight chatter is quite good. The Transdoshan guy, the crocodile looking guy, is very charming. It's the in-between mission monologs that feel incredibly wooden. I'm not sure if there is a better way to do those, though, because it's literally just a speech. They are oversharing about their past and personalities with no prompting from you and no back and forth dialog. I think a sequel could do things like have more areas to explore on the ship which would give more context for the characters to be talking. Like, for instance, if you saw them in the cantina and could talk to them while they share drinks. Or if you could play them in sabaac. Etc.
@@JazGalaxy @JazGalaxy Yes the in-flight chatter is fine. It's mostly the Empire dudes who I have a problem with. But it's also a really cool game so. Just a nitpick, really. And yeah that sounds cool. Or if you could pick some responses and maybe they would (very lightly) be touched on in-flight or later. I think any of those things would go a long way.
I'm so pissed that I got a code for XBox for this game. Since that Battlefront VR Mission I wanted nothing more for VR than a Star Wars flight sim... guess I'll have to buy it for PS4 now...
My ultra nerdy childhood dream of being in the cockpit of a y-wing and tie interceptor has been made a (virtual) reality. That would be enough fo me but it's cool that the game is competent as well.
@@VulturePilot You sound like someone who hasn't played VR yet. Battlefront and Rogue Squadron in now way allow you to SIT in the cockpit of a star fighter. In VR you actually feel like you are sitting in a star fighter. SO much so that when I first sat in an Xwing in the Rogue One Mission of Battlefront VR I immediately felt how clostrophobic it is sitting in an Xwing, which is something I had never thought about before. And when your windshield cracks from taking too much damage, it actually feels like you need to worry about "space" coming in. Rogue Squadron doesn't do that.
VR is the best way to play! Xbox gamer has no clue what is this VR u guys keep mentioning. What is VR! U mean Xbox Elite Controller 2. Then they have multiple generation of it.
This game keeps crashing my PC, like a full shutdown crash. I’m running a RTX 2080 as well so it’s not a requirement thing the game is just super buggy. The load times are ridiculous too up to 10 mins to load into the hub (running from an Evo 970 pro)
Don't forget that there was a massive amount of star wars toys, tv specials, spinoff movies, cartoon series, merchandising, video games, school supplies, fast food tie-ins, scratch and sniff stickers etc in the 80's and 90's and the relentless tide of scum and villainy has never ceased. It gets old fast
@@cloudbloom compared to today I wouldn't call it a massive amount, but I get where you're coming from. Back then a new Star Wars movie was still a special and rare event, just like around the prequel era (even though they sucked).
agree, vr that does not work with motion controls. dog fights just are not casual as in battlefront games, but also not complicated enough for its own entry. i also heard that vr is not working with motion controls. only regular controller or mouse and keyboard. that’s bad for vr
It's absolutely not for everyone. It's a very smart game that requires strategy, attention span, and an ability to use complex controls. If you're a person who likes "roller coaster" games... yeah. It's probably pretty boring. It's not about constantly putting something exciting in front of your face every few minutes in fear that you'll stop playing and do something else if it's not explosion after cliffhanger after explosion.
@@maestroan3338 why would you want inaccurate floaty motion controls for a game like this? You can play with literally any kind of hard mounted controller option, including flight stick and throttle, which is a tactile representation of the controls in the star fighter. You just dont get to see your hands waving around.
@@nickharris5231 But my interest in the franchise definitely does. I'm well within my rights to support or oppose anything I want. The only one losing here is EA and Disney, because they don't get a dime of my money.
@@RS-kt6bo and you... Because the game is great. Do what you want man, you're just cutting your nose off to spite your face. It's all good, I get what you're saying, and you vote with your dollar, but it's just a video game... A fun one.
@@nickharris5231 If it's just a videogame, I'm not cutting anything. My nose and face are just fine and I intend to keep them that way. This might be the greatest game ever created, but EA has put me off buying anything from their catalog, because of their rich history of anti consumer practices. And let's not even get into how Disney killed my love for SW. I will do my part and make a stand.
@@RS-kt6bo so what's the end goal here? EA heard the message after BFII, they removed all microtransactions for that game and released all the DLC for free. We got a fantastic single player game with no microtransactions after that in Fallen Order, and now they've made Squadrons, a game that harkens back to a series of games I never EVER thought I'd see a successor to (X-wing vs Tie Fighter); which has a lengthy single player campaign and a central multiplayer game with no microtransactions. As far as Im concerned, these are games I want, and I plan to encourage these practices from EA because this is the right direction for them. As for Disney and Star Wars... They're never goong to give up tue rights, and mever going to stop usong the property, so supporting the good moves encourages them to go in that direction. I think this game is a good move, you may not. I'm just enjoying the hell out of this experience.
This is the most low effort video you've ever put out, haha. Skip through the video and take a shot if it's a npc talking instead of the reviewer every time you stop... Alcohol poisoning.
I was looking at the scores on Metacritic and found that it was review bombed by people calling it "woke". I literally had not idea what they were talking about until someone eventually said that there are no "white man" options on the character select screen. I didn't even notice. I DID notice the refusal to say "male" or "female" which was groan worthy. But that's pretty much the extent of it. And if that trips you up so much that you can't play the game, you have extremely thin skin.

Wait, no third person view?
Graphics are rough though or is it just me?
Checked this out in VR day one. Can't wait to keep playing it's a flipping DREAM
I'll be waiting for the Great Galactic War expansion.
That would be sweet in vr
I REALLY wish other devs could get the chance to develop a SW game. We barely had a few games the last decade 😭😭
Poor GameOverGreggy ;,(
Even if it's just 40 USD, I'll still wait for sale when it's 10 USD.
Their professionalism in the review department is unmatched.
Awesome!
My ultra nerdy childhood dream of being in the cockpit of a y-wing and tie interceptor has been made a (virtual) reality. That would be enough fo me but it's cool that the game is competent as well.
Guess you missed the Battlefronts and the rogue squadron games
I’m tired of game like this not having local vs/co-op anymore.
No planetary maps? 2 Multiplayer modes? No track IR support? Yeah that's a skip for me.
Shooting down GameoverGreggy lmao
Love how the reviewer on the past 2 reviews drops in 'it makes you feel like...' little dig at ign there haha
I feel like I don't know why you gave it an 8
I really wish I gave a shit about Star Wars still....
haha rip kindafunny
VR is the best way to play! Xbox gamer has no clue what is this VR u guys keep mentioning. What is VR! U mean Xbox Elite Controller 2. Then they have multiple generation of it.
I disagree, this game is for VR... i played the non vr mode and it SUCKS for real
This game keeps crashing my PC, like a full shutdown crash. I’m running a RTX 2080 as well so it’s not a requirement thing the game is just super buggy. The load times are ridiculous too up to 10 mins to load into the hub (running from an Evo 970 pro)
Crossplay? - oof. i was gonna buy this game until i heard that shit. allowing pc players into the console ecosystem always ruins multiplayer.
So its confirmed that we are confined to cockpit view? If that really is the case, I am out.
Unexpected
But so much soy! I'll pass
I was thoroughly burned out on star wars almost 30 years ago, and the franchise just. doesn't. stop. releasing. more.😖
30 years ago? That is very early to be burned out on Star Wars ;p
@@DOSkywalkR I'm a crotchety, cynical old fuck what can I say🤷
Don't forget that there was a massive amount of star wars toys, tv specials, spinoff movies, cartoon series, merchandising, video games, school supplies, fast food tie-ins, scratch and sniff stickers etc in the 80's and 90's and the relentless tide of scum and villainy has never ceased. It gets old fast
@@cloudbloom compared to today I wouldn't call it a massive amount, but I get where you're coming from. Back then a new Star Wars movie was still a special and rare event, just like around the prequel era (even though they sucked).
Am I the only person that thinks the game looks quite boring?
I think unless you're playing in VR with HOTAS it could get boring.
@@gingersnaps7186 campaign looks fun, multiplayer looks bleh
agree, vr that does not work with motion controls. dog fights just are not casual as in battlefront games, but also not complicated enough for its own entry.
i also heard that vr is not working with motion controls. only regular controller or mouse and keyboard. that’s bad for vr
Star Wars is dead. Thanks Disney.
Your loss. This has nothing to do with the new continuity.
Cast isn't diverse enough.
This is the most low effort video you've ever put out, haha. Skip through the video and take a shot if it's a npc talking instead of the reviewer every time you stop... Alcohol poisoning.
Terrible 5 hour campaign, and a buggy, unworkable multiplayer
The game is woke. No thanks
The whole game is "alert to injustice in society, especially racism."? Oh no, what a crime 🙄😒
Tom the Cyclist Why does that need to be in a Star Wars game lmao..
@@saesang352 Why does it offend you so much that it is?
Tom the Cyclist I politely said ‘no thanks’. I’m not even going to play it. SJWs you all can have at it
I was looking at the scores on Metacritic and found that it was review bombed by people calling it "woke".
Looks boring af
