The Newcastle Revolution is well underway, and while no one would’ve expected them to be this good this quickly, this season has proven that a clear philosophy and well thought out transfer window can instantly change the identity of a team. The new ownership is certainly the main factor to consider, but if we’ve learnt anything this season, is that just spending a lot of money is definitely not the answer, and a clear tactical system is also a necessity, and eddie how has managed to get the best out of every player. So how did they do it? Generally speaking, the current best sides in the world tend to deploy an aggressive high press and high defensive line to dominate possession, while other teams sit back and look to create opportunities on the counter. But this season, Newcastle sit perfectly in the middle between these two approaches, and eddie howe has created a modern system built on intensity and speed that perfectly suits his players.

It’s actually a bit of a misconception that Dan Burn becomes a 3rd centre half when we’re in possession. Maybe at the start of the season that was a feature of our defence to allow Trippier to essentially play RW, but opposition teams cottoned on to it and would just squeeze the pitch to the right so there was never an out ball to the left-wing. More recently Burn has been trusted to get forward, often overlapping the left winger and staying high and wide to stretch the play and provide a threat on the left which means the opposition can’t press us to the right and then double or triple up on Trippier and Almiron/Murphy- this is where a lot of our attacks came from towards the back end of the season
Burn also ventured into CDM long before Pep made Stones do it...

No wonder they rejected the Automatic off-side system used at the world cup for next season. They'll have to let the PGMOL cheat their selected teams to victories.

Newcastle’s possession stats are far superior to many sides in the PL now, particularly at home - no longer merely a counter attack side, there’s far more to this side than before (and mostly with the same players too, many of which were in the Championship).

As for me, NU has very short bench for two big competitions such as EPL and CL. So the result will go down in this season. It is impossible to be SO intensively two days a week
