I think I speak for us all when I say we would not mind you continuing to enlighten us with your monthly purchases and thinking behind them! Or perhaps a seasonal round up like you’ve done in the past, which I think also shows an interesting arc. But I know for myself, and looking through the comments seems like for others too, hearing someone’s thought process but also your confidence in what you did actually purchase has been really illuminating!
Licensed massage therapist here to say I'm so glad your spending practices have allowed for guilt-free massages! Being in pain would have made it more difficult to enjoy whatever else you might have purchased this month. I carve out space for regular bodywork in my budget too - look at us out here taking extra good care of ourselves 🥰
something that helps me buy WAYYYYY less clothing is that now i sew most of my own clothes. i can make the cecilie bahnsen dresses of my dreams at shein prices with high quality, 100% natural fabrics. plus when people ask me "where did you get that?" i get to say i made it, which is the best feeling ever.
Hannah! This is only partially on topic, but I feel compelled to tell you about 3 recent occurrences that you #influenced: 1. I successfully completed a no-buy January, which would have felt absolutely impossible to me a few short months ago. I'm now doing a low buy for February and plan to alternate no-buy and low-buy months for the remainder of the year. 2. After wishlisting and much deliberation, I spent part of my February budget on an eyshadow palette that I'm absolutely in love with and enjoying guilt free! The looks are serving AND my wallet is happy. 3. I just finished the first class in Julia's compassion immersion, and it was just as wonderful as I'd envisioned after hearing you talk about it. All of that is to say, thank you for doing what you do and influencing me to work on myself and my habits. ❤
Immediately felt the urge to buy the bodywash as you described it, then went into my bathroom to stare at the 3 bottles of bodywash already in my shower 🙃
I have to say, found you from TFD in August and have been growing more fond of your content for the past months. I love how analytical and reflective your content is. I love the focus on appreciating and, not only using, but recontextualizing what one already has. I found myself using your terminology like "beautiful things" in my own thinking almost daily.
The "automatic no" is so powerful because it kind of forces you to come up with a solid reason to justify a purchase. A "no buy" is great and necessary for some people, but doesn't encourage you to reason because you're not allowing yourself to spend no matter what.
I think that’s such a valuable point! A ‘no buy’ seems more like a boot camp that exercises that part of your brain you need for saying no. But it’s not something regular folks can maintain indefinitely.
I'm also doing a "reluctance to buy year" and have actually managed to buy no makeup or skincare or fragrance products so far in 2023, and I'm not even sad about it. This strategy has made it so easy to just oh nope, I already have one of those, and I don't need it - thank you so much for the idea! We had to emergency fix some things in our house, and it was so nice to be like "yup, we can afford that!" vs looking at my pile of new makeup I didn't need and wishing I hadn't bought them. Love your channel as always!!
I didn’t think I could possibly love your content more than I already do but then you singing the “Bob and Brad song“ elicited a childlike giggle from my lips and a much needed “soul smile” knowing that I am not the only one who loves Bob and Brad and their little song!
I just use a metal stick to dip the candle wick into the melted wax and it ‘snuffs’ it. That prevents the smoke as well as the soot from forming along the top of the candle.
Tip for those with the same candle smoke dilemma: many candles in jars are in standard sizes. I hang on to metal lids from old candles and use them to snuff lidless candles.
I love the cloche - it's so stylish. I learned a tip recently for candles without lids: using a chopstick or similar tool, push the lit wick into the melted wax to snuff and then stand it back up.
I bought a set of candle tools that includes a bell-shaped candle sniffer, a wick trimmer, and a candle dipper [which achieves the same result and is also good at positioning the wick to keep it centered and also to scrape the excess wax from the inside of glass/pottery candle holders].
Just when I didn’t think the birds nest messy bun couldn’t get any better! Hannah you are serving a lewk in this video. Love getting a sneak peak into your purchases 💜
Just went to Bob and Brads page because I also have sudden and random shoulder issues that sound very similar to what you were saying. Bless these beautiful parts of the Internet, including yours 😊
I honestly am so glad I’ve been following your for a few years now, you have made me a much more mindful consumer and you explain things in such a way that is easy to understand. It’s inspired me so much and I hope I keep learning from you ❤❤
Your "What I Bought" videos are definitely some of my favorites that you do. I find them so incredibly helpful, and I hope you continue to sprinkle them in pretty regularly on your channel. 🤞🏻🤞🏻 I'm trying hard to work on myself this year, and only shop in healthy ways, and these videos always make me really think about my goals, and feel like we're in this together. Thanks for sharing, Hannah! 💜🌷
My spending vice has been food related. So, I’ve been implementing a stoppage of buying indulgent things just for myself, like an almond croissant from a fancy bakery because it’s never just one thing, I end up buying that loaf of bread that I didn’t really need and a some crackers, etc. When I started doing this, I noticed that the financial pinch I used to feel every month, because of this sort of spending and going to brunches and dinners with friends, was alleviated. I adore the time I spend with friends and this way I don’t hesitate doing so or worry about it’s effect on my wallet. This has also made me cook for myself more regularly and that is something for which my health has thanked me.
My unexpected expense for January and also February so far is that one of my 13 year old cats was diagnosed with kidney failure. So I've had to spend a considerable amount on lifestyle changes, new food, medical supplies, and lots of exams. I'm thankful I have the money to cover these expenses, because I would do anything for my babies. My new vet is amazing and the treatment plan we're on is working sooo well. So on top of other life things, this happened and I haven't been able to treat myself to any new makeup in a long while. But, I have saved some money and I'm planning on getting Lauren's collab with Oden's Eye! Love your content as always, Hannah!
I’ve read that if your candle smokes it means you need to trim its wick. Another tip is that you need to burn a scented candle for about 30-45 mins until the whole surface of candle has melted- it might be shorter for a smaller candle and longer for a larger one. At this point you blow it out. The candle will now continue to throw fragrance from the melted wax. Burning it any longer is just burning away money. This way your expensive candles last longer. Hope this helps 😊
I think your story about the cloche, particularly about how you wouldn't have purchased it online, has reinvigorated my resolution to shop less online. It was a goal of mine this year and I already find myself slipping into old habits. I feel like online shopping has taken a lot of joy out of shopping, while at the same time increasing our availability to all things.
This quickly turned into a Kackie made me buy it video! Glad to hear your month has gone well and I will bookmark the cleansing oil for when I use up what is in my shower. It sounds like something I would enjoy and use.
I SO appreciate how you talk about spending. I’m also trying to spend less and be more thoughtful when I do make purchases. I tell myself just because I like - or even love - something, doesn’t mean I have to have it. Thank you!! ❤
I commented about this before but i have the opposite problem of always being too strict with my purchases. On January i was planning on making a larger purchase so i could have a place to store my shoes which was not years old cardboard boxes. I told myself "i'll get it at the end of the month as long as i don't have an emergency" and then my bed broke with one day left for the month to end lol. Unfortunately i folded and i'm now planning on buying it at the end of February. Your candle purchase reminds me of that. Do i have alternatives to it? Yes. Would it solve lots of problems and make my living situation better? Also yes. I gotta remind myself to value my comfort.
I have the same problem when it comes to treating myself with unnecessary indulgences like a manicure or pedicure. I always think, well I can just not spend that money. I've started putting money aside specifically for this kind of 'luxury' (i.e. not essential) purchase. I have a savings space in my online bank account called 'Treats' and I send a specified amount of money to it each month (you could do it at the end of a month when nothing has gone wrong!), then when I think about doing or buying something indulgent I tell myself, "that's what that money is for". You could do the same with cash if that works better for you. Choose a denomination of money (e.g. $5 bills) that you don't spend, you put aside whenever you get one of those, and that's for treats. I used to do this with £2 coins. Whenever one made it into my purse I would put it away as Fun Money.
You should get a wax melt warmer for the amazing scents and use candles for the ambiance. There are tons and I mean tons of amazing wax melt/candle vendors who can literally make any scent your heart desires and I mean ANY SCENT EVER! I’m melting Bacarat Rouge 540 in my bedroom right now and Tom Ford lost cherry in my living room and they’re exquisite!
To avoid smoke when snuffing out a candle you need to dip the wick in the wax and it will snuff out the flame sans smoke. Trim the wick before lighting again so that the flame isn’t as big which also creates smoke. You can get a set from Wickman.
Try extinguishing the candle by submerging the wick into the wax then pulling it back up. Of course, they make a fancy tool for that - a wick dipper, but I just use a wooden stick. 😊The cloche will still have its purpose to preserve a candle scent when you're not burning it.
Get a candle wick dipper! It’s like a metal wand that’s bent at the end, so you just push the lit wick into the melted candle wax to put it out without getting smokey, then pull the wick back up with the bend at the end of the wand. Life changing candle experience!
Maybe this is nosy of me but curious what books and poetry you bought! I've been using my public library app to avoid actually PAYING for books but usually it's my big indulgence... Books somehow feel like they're in a category apart.
I have been doing well with my "the answer is always 'no'" low buy so far. I've bought some gifts, and a nail polish (not really an overspending category for me...) but no clothes for myself which were a HUGE temptation.
Hey Hannah! I enjoyed this video today, and that TF palette, or at least the eggplant-plum color you wore, is perfect for you! One thing I've learned about candles is to keep the wicks trimmed. And it seems the cheaper candles burn with much more smoke. I don't know if it's the less expensive fragrance oils they have or what, but the more high end candles burn cleaner. So thank you for this video!
I was wondering if you considered sewing something for yourself to quench the thirst for clothes. I tend to be more contend in that department if I'm in the process of making something.
Candle smoke - immediately after blowing out the candle, dip your finger into the liquid wax around the base of the wick and coat the remaining wick with that wax. It instantly stops the wick from smoking and actually prolongs the use of your candle (you know when the wick burns out and won’t light again when it’s really getting down, this method stops that too)
I wanna give a shout out to Libraries. Yes, having personal copies of books is totally a reasonable thing to do; but I know my spouse and I have been really digging investing time into our local libraries as well. That's how they get funding and they're usually a community center and have all kinds of cool activities too! People, please support your local branches 🙏🏾📚🤓
The automatic no has stopped me from the urge to buy things this year, it’s working so great! No more looking through swatches and figuring out which shade to buy. Somehow my life becomes so easier and fresh 😊
Hi Hannah, you might be aware and less squeamish than I, but I just wanted to mention that the VB Jewel Satin Kajal's are listed as not waterline safe, unlike like her regular line. Guess this is due to the glitters in them. I had the same thought for the sequin green one too. It was the Olive that her original olive kajal promised. Like the idea of this video, reflecting on purchases seems like a good exercise for anyone living in the world as it is today. As we're heading towards Spring I know that I need to keep a better handle on myself as 'plants' become my top problem category, and make sure the other areas are kept in check. I'd love to hear more about what you're reading.
Thank you for checking in on the automatic no. I really want to apply it more, but have 3 orders that have been living in my head for months. I'm so close to placing them all, but none are necessities and all are fun/hobby buys so there is no reason to buy all
Bob and Brad are THE BEST! ♥ Truly one of the best resources for what ails you physically and how to help you help your self~~ and frankly, they are good for one's mental health as well. Love them.
I never knew that the bell jars are for candles. It's so smart. I display other things in the two I have but never have tried the candle thing - I need to try it :)
Phenomenal look, simple but impactful. I bought some perfume in January and I think I might need to take a page out of your book where clothing is concerned and cool it for the rest of February and March 😬
Thank you for your "reluctance to buy" inspiration. I also have the clothing Achilles heal. I am not doing as well as you... because the thrift store has a significant hold on me. I am almost done with my counseling degree and I am considering starting a beautiful things buyers support group.
LOVE this makeup pairing, especially with this top! Also, I just had my first session of Julia Frodahl’s compassion course today, and it is already so wonderful! Thank you for speaking of it frequently enough that I was moved to actually check it out 💜
A tip for candles with no lids is to dip the wick into the wax to distinguish it. There are special wick sticks to easily push down the wick. Keeps the smoke away & recoats the wick with wax. Safer than blowing out a candle too so no hot wax splash.
Hannah! You’re putting out candles the wrong way haha … just try to dip the burning wick into the melted wax, there are tools for that as well, there’s no smoke and it “resets” the wick for next burn as well. Anyway loving your hair bun here ❤️
I'm very happy to report that my low buy is going exceptionally well. So far this year i have only bought one second hand jacket and thats it! Ive even gone out to "look around" couple of times (funny enough, i did that today) and have left completelly empty handed even tougj both times i've come across -70% make up or skincare. So far so good I'd say!
With all the tiktok deinfluencing trend, i will always come back to the original deinfluencer in my life ❤️ Hannah, I value your contribution so much
Next up: least worn pieces from your closet! Accessories, fashion, nail polish, etc… ❤
Oooh yes please! 🙋🏼♀️
ou!! And perfume!!!

I must admit I sang along with the Bob and Brad theme. Your makeup is perfect for your top.
Your thumbnail images have gotten so good. This one is masterful. Just thought you might like to know they’re appreciated.

Your kindness is inspiring and warms my heart! Really appreciate you and what you stand for!
...you dip the wick in the melted wax. Wick is immediately engulfed, so no smoke. Simple. I use a metal cuticle pusher.
Hi Hannah, you might be aware and less squeamish than I, but I just wanted to mention that the VB Jewel Satin Kajal's are listed as not waterline safe, unlike like her regular line. I love that conclusion! What a beautiful, tangible way of being smart to be able to take care of yourself.

This look is striking- love the plummy brown with the orangey lip! It is Inspiring me to think of what unexpected combinations I can try !
Phenomenal look, simple but impactful. I bought some perfume in January and I think I might need to take a page out of your book where clothing is concerned and cool it for the rest of February and March 😬
Hannah could you please share how you did this hairstyle? 🥺
Thank you for your "reluctance to buy" inspiration. I also have the clothing Achilles heal. I am not doing as well as you... because the thrift store has a significant hold on me. I am almost done with my counseling degree and I am considering starting a beautiful things buyers support group.
I love Bob and Brad!
MAKEs rebrand is one of the best glow-ups ever
I love Bob and Brad!!!!
The Make beauty hydrascape serum is great. Especially, since I like using a lot of actives.
This is my favorite kind of content you make!!
LOVE this makeup pairing, especially with this top!
Also, I just had my first session of Julia Frodahl’s compassion course today, and it is already so wonderful! Thank you for speaking of it frequently enough that I was moved to actually check it out 💜
Yes!!! Love Bob and Brad!
this turtleneck is SICKKKK I loveeee
do you ever review powder foundations? i can never get liquid to look good on my skin but its so hard finding a pale olive shade
A tip for candles with no lids is to dip the wick into the wax to distinguish it. There are special wick sticks to easily push down the wick. Keeps the smoke away & recoats the wick with wax. Safer than blowing out a candle too so no hot wax splash.
Please do book content of some kind! Even shorts would be a dream to watch
I love the finished look today. Interesting reflection on January purchases!
I know you have no intention of turning UA-cam in your only full time career, but I would love a second Channel by you based on poetry and books
Loving your hair! ❤❤❤
Hannah! You’re putting out candles the wrong way haha … just try to dip the burning wick into the melted wax, there are tools for that as well, there’s no smoke and it “resets” the wick for next burn as well. Anyway loving your hair bun here ❤️
Stunning look! So happy to see you wearing it! I love Bob and Brad! 😂😂❤️❤️❤️
Yes, Bob and Brad are the Best.
As I was watching this video my sister’s Galentine’s Day present to me arrived-this exact lip gloss! I love it!
Bob and Brad 💖
Do you ever share your reading lists? Always looking for recs.
I love this sort of content. I hope it's more pleasant for you to share these days. It might be fun to see something like this seasonally.
New subscriber and wanted to reach out and say thank you for your videos, they've helped me so much!
I have always wanted to try ellis faas- and never see anyone talk about it. Any more thoughts on it?
