This video reminds me of the time I interviewed an ad copywriter and they said that they watch depressive movies to learn about human insecurities, so that they could offer their client's products to "fix" the "problem". So, yes, in a world where some people would try to make profit out of your search for perfection, being content with what you've got is a radical act.

One of my big aha moments was that a happy customer is a bad customer, cuz they'll either realize that they don't need stuff to feel good, or they've found what works for them and won't explore other products. The best customer is the one that's never satisfied with themselves or products. That moment helped me realize that brands are never my friend.

I always thought something was wrong with my hair, it wasn’t naturally straight and smooth like in commercials (where they showed that as undesirable and sold solutions for it), on celebrities or on straight haired friends. Even hairdressers remarked negatively on my hair! When I realized there is nothing wrong with my hair, that’s just it’s natural texture it was a game changer.

Another lie - Price point. Me and my daughter were in Marshalls the other day and we see a famous lip product that cost about 25 bucks in Ulta for 1 lip mask (she use to work there so she knows all the prices) Well Marshalls was selling the lip masks for 25.00 for a pack of 4. And she wanted to buy them (not that she needed them) because it was so much cheaper than Ulta. And I said, but you don't need it and just because they are priced lower just goes to show that Ulta was overcharging for this product to begin with. No customers in this store are rushing these product because its so much cheaper than retail pricing. We already know the retail price is overpriced. I'm done with that beauty industry lie.

Fabletics does the price point thing too. I guess everybody does it lol. How I see it: If I can get your product for $12 the first time, I know it’s only worth $12 and probably cost you half that to make it. Why would I value your product enough to pay $50 when I know it’s only worth $12?

Yes! I've far too often fallen into the Marshall's/ discount pricing trap. Yes it's cheaper at Marshall's, but that doesn't mean I need it anymore than I did if I was willing to pay full retail price.
In other words, if I wouldn't pay the retail price for it, I don't need it at any price.
That has stopped the impulse to "snag a good deal".

A local store was closing out a line of lipsticks. I had earlier paid $35 for a shade I loved and now they were selling what they had left for $5 each. I bought several of those lipsticks, even though none of them was my favorite shade, because the price was so good. In a year I have never used any of those other shades, so I threw out $25. Not a lot of money, but I still feel foolish when I look at those shades. And I'm going to toss them right after this video is done. Thanks, Hannah!

The first lie is called “perceived opulence” and when I learned about it years ago, it triggered me to slow down and buy differently. A new iPhone available every year, making your current, workable iPhone “seem old/outdated” is exactly that.
A new palette every month. A new lipstick collaboration every week. A new line of something or whatever right after the first one has barely caught dust. That is perceived opulence

As a eastern european, when I was younger Zara was a luxury for my family. However , due to the fact that in my family we are seamstresses and fabric oriented, we bought both fast fashion but take care for the fabric and design that lasts. I have a suede leather jacket from zara that is faux sheepskin lined and it was with me for 6 years and counting. Also a normal leather jacket from promod, a french fashion brand, that has aged but aged well . I store them with care , condition the leather , etc. Same with cotton poplin shirts, high cotton percentage jeans. I ve changed body sizes and I had still a good functioning wardrobe in a couple of years after I lost the weight. Of course this means maybe that my standards are low , but also the volume of my consumption is not of the the buy , wear one season. It's thinking to mend, repurpose, prolong and cherish all the clothes, especially understanding that the human cost of those garments is so high

100%, even "fast fashion brands" was something I have seen as luxury most of my life

    • @pppearled

There definitely are good quality pieces to be found from fast fashion brands. By and large a lot of what they produce is not very high quality, particularly the really trendy items that combine 3-4 trends into one piece, or things that are really out there that won't age well and that most people won't continue wearing once it goes out of style (let alone wearing it enough that it falls apart).
I think the idea of clothing from fast fashion brands falling apart after a few uses only applies to some of their clothing - certainly $5 t-shirts from H&M or Zara fall into that category, while a pair of 100% cottons jeans or a linen dress may not because it's made of a sturdy fabric and will likely hold up better than a super stretchy pair of jeans or a polyester dress. The thing with fast fashion is it encourages people to buy new clothes every week (because they launch new styles every week) and it goes on sale so often that people buy SO MUCH of it that they don't end up wearing half of it.
I check the label of everything I buy because I don't like buying polyester/acrylic/nylon and a lot of clothing in fast fashion is made of those materials, but if I found a great pair of jeans or a beautiful cotton/linen dress that fit me perfectly then I would buy it, wear it all the time and keep it for years. I think you just have to be a lot pickier with what you buy from fast fashion brands because the good quality items that will last are harder to come by and can be difficult to spot if you don't know what you're looking for (or how to do basic repairs).
If we choose to engage with it, we all have to grapple with the fact that fast fashion retailers (and may high end ones too) use extremely underpaid (mostly) female labour from developing countries in their garment factories. The flip side is that we can't expect people living all over the world in different circumstances to all be able to afford more expensive non-fast fashion not only for themselves, but if they're parents then for their children too (who of course grow out of clothing very quickly). It's the reality of the world we live in that we now expect clothes to be affordable even though we know where they come from and what happens in order to make them affordable. Is it right? No, of course not. I don't know what the solution is but I personally try to just be really mindful about what I buy, and I focus mostly on quality/materials and buying the right piece for me rather than where it comes from, and I figure at least I am minimising my own consumption (and therefore contribution to this system) in that way.

One of the better life skills I picked up, I suppose in Girl Scouts but also through a lot of trial and error on my own, is fixing clothes. Repairing buttons is easy. Fixing small holes is a bit more challenging. Making a seamless patch requires some know-how and the equipment (iron on patch, good iron that can get hot, a sewing machine in some cases.) I've even ventured into doing my own alterations on clothes I got on sale, turning a pair of Tall jeans into a pair of Mediums for myself that fit perfectly, and adjusting a cute dress to fit my pear shaped body much better than off the rack. But for the purposes of keeping good clothes around and not needing to replace them, being able to do your own minor sewing fixes can save SO MUCH MONEY.

The company or product gets discontinued. I had the same skin routine for nearly a decade and when I the company folded I had to start from scratch. Since then every time I find a product I like something happens like the discontinue the fragrance free version or they change the formula and my skin feels like it’s burning. I would happily use the same skincare for the rest of my life but few products have that lifespan especially in the skin sensitive world.

As a trans guy, buying a binder, packer and harness actually helped me shake off some of the doubt I was feeling about my own gender identity, which became foundational to me building a healthy confidence. Often buying gender affirming clothing does change trans folks lives. Of course, that's an uncommon situation, and what you said in the video is definetely true.

This kind of depth is what I miss in much of the beauty content on YT. I wonder if the comment, "You look old" or "You look older than your age" will ever be considered a compliment to the majority of people over the age of 20? Seems like a fear of dying is at the heart of this fear of aging and looking older.

    • @lulubelle65
      @lulubelle65 Рік тому +1

People are willing to go under the knife to look younger, a process which kills a certain number of people each year. I think that the fear of “looking old” is about being less relevant or somehow invisible as we age. As a middle-aged woman, I can tell you that I become more invisible each year. It’s actually a relief to walk down the street without dealing with unwanted attention, but if your self-worth is based on attention, particularly male attention, becoming invisible is traumatic.

The best thing I did was track my products with an app and get a professional makeup consult. I can monitor what I have, expiration dates, and it made me realize how little I used. The makeup artist made recs based on what liked and what worked well for me. As a result my collection is down to a CC cream, a setting powder, 2 blushes, mascara, and a few lipsticks. The only time I get new products is when out or expired.

This is extremely good advice. It's good overall advice for putting your mental energy as much as possible into things that hold true value, and helpful strategies for stopping the habit of investing things that have no meaning... with enough mental energy to put you off balance. This video's about shopping for beauty products, but it's a pretty straightforward metaphor for a lot of other things that distract a person from working on the self.

Absolutely adore this video! You explained this so incredibly well, I was hooked throughout the whole video… so many interesting points brought up that I haven’t seen anyone else talk about.
I feel lucky that I personally, didn’t buy as much into some of those lies. Of course I sometimes did, but then I often felt guilty after buying something because I wondered whether I actually need it. My main issue is that I have a lot of things that I haven’t bought myself, the majority of my (huge) beauty collection were gifted products and I struggle to use them all up. I give some away that I like less but there are still SO many things I love and want to use up that I can’t give them away, yet I know that I won’t be able to reasonably use them up before they expire. A very unusual „problem” to have, but I wonder if you have any tips on how to deal with this?

A little over half way and I have some thoughts.
    1. Love the buy to last philosophy. Do you think cheaper items can last? I have shirts from Ross that are 15 years old. Is that just an iteration of quality?
    2. Does the philosophy for nothing can change your world apply only in beauty? For instance a new cooking gadget can and has saved me time, given me access to recipes that I might not have tried before, and generally made me happier. It doesn't cause an extreme jump. And I do return to baseline. But it's a quiet baseline that has changed. Much like if you workout unless you're vigilant you will plateau. But it's still a much higher baseline than someone who doesn't.
    3. You can't change who you are, I half agree you can't change your personality through materialism. But what about the way you are treated and the opportunities you get? Attractiveness (pretty privi****) is a scientific concept. Granted, there are ways that might be simpler and more efficient/cost effective to do so (know your body shape, shop thrifted, learn how makeup works and use strategically instead of liberally) You're still you but you are an elevated version.
    4. Based on that, can't the message of creating a stunning version of yourself be antithetical to the concept of buying things because you feel bad? In the thought of you like yourself but you want to improve?

Few things I wished this video addressed:
    1. Sometimes NEW IS better than OLD, for instance when companies come up with newer and better formulations. New products VS buying a used beauty product on the second hand market - it's not hygienic and can put your health at risk.
    2. Beauty products CANNOT be made to last because those types of ingredients are damaging to the skin and our health

I think that the most powerfull tool to cut spendings on beauty products is realizing ourselfs that they are FMGC. So they are always temporarily on our drawers, we would always have to buy new and new items, when we would be out of them (like out of shampoo and so on), so it is impossible to keep the same item forever or even for a very long time (like clothings may be or furniture etc.). We need to accept they are more or less like butter or carrot in our fridges.
