I find that since caked up grass can hold moisture, it's best to clean the bottom of the mower deck before winter storage to help prevent rust forming.
No no… I’m not ready for this conversation. We did just have our first night in the low 40’s but things are trending back to normal. So hopefully I have another month or so to establish this lawn. Excellent tips as always!
The best thing about following Ryan is I also live in central Iowa. (WDM) Just makes things easier. We have the same temp's grass types and etc. Hard to mess up. My yard looks so much better since I've been following...thanks
Denver, Iowa(10miles north of Cedar Falls). I live in a residential wooded area...and have dozens of trees....so I have piles of leaves everywhere and will continue to fall for another month. I try to get most of the leaves off the yard...but it's multiple runs with a larger riding John Deere mower, which just pounds down the grass. Any experience/suggestions with larger mowers and picking up leaves? I have several acres, so it's multiples hours of mowing a week.
I end up chopping my grass down to around 2" at the end of the season, while leaving it around 3" during the growing season. I need to chop mine short or else voles and mice will have too much fun and destroy it all.
So I have a question now about weed control at this time of year. I live a few hours east of Ryan outside Chicago and am late to the party when it comes to lawn maintenance. I have a horrible case of Creeping Charlie which I tried to spray with something that did not really work. I found this channel and want to try T-Zone but still waiting for my project which I just ordered yesterday. Is it too late to apply weed control on my overgrown Creeping Charlie? We had our first frost of the season last night, November 1st. Weather will be in the 40s now for the rest of the week but may be low 30s at night.
Im in the same position - lol The wife loves it (NOT) but its got to be stored somewhere. Good content as always - We are also in our business clean up mode. We are pretty much wrapping up the mowing, and blowing out the underground sprinkler systems, here in Minnesota. We are right there with ya Ryan! lol - Filling the tanks appox 95% full will help prevent condensation from building up in the tank and carb. So I normally fill 95% full, then add the stabilizer.
Hello, I live in middle part of Europe(Poland) and I need some help with applying winterizer. I did full fall lawn renovation and it went great. Also I planted some new grass(Tall fescue and Perennial ryegrass) in the back of my house but its growing really slow it's got like almost 2inches long. In the end of September I put 10-8-12(N-P-K) fertilizer when I was doing renovation. Now we got almost end of October and we are starting to have temp 11-12 C(51-32 F) in the day and 0-3 C(32-37 F) in the night. My question is should I apply some winterizer as we will be getting rain in the couple of weeks? Should I use 10-8-12(N-P-K) or 12-23(P-K) with no nitrogen?
Hey, here is my issue that I don't know what to do about... We just bought a house and the yard is utter TRASH! I am not joking when I say it's 80% weeds! Dandelion and clover everywhere. Everything I saw said that I need to start with weeds since they are so prevalent! I applied the Scotts Fall weed and feed granules. It didn't do anything to the weeds. Even 2 weeks later they didn't care, still showing signs of growing. So I purchased a sprayer and broad sprayed the whole yard with Ortho WeedClear. They are finally dying off now.... Unfortunately way late in the season. I read that you should overseed in fall though. I am pretty sure it's too late for that though here in Northeast Ohio! We have gotten really cold temps and I definitely can't water it the way the seed needs it. So is it ok to overseed in spring? When should I do that? I also didn't mention that I did also dethatch. Using a yard sweeper to pick it up I had 5 FULL heaping loads in the sweeper on just half acre!! So what's my next action??
I buy the 93 octane gas for my Toro mower. Up to 10% ethanol around here, can't get ethanol free within 70 miles or so. Its a mower i got from the curb, runs strong, even leaving the gas in all winter. Hoping the few weeds i have die off with freeze expected this week, else i'll spray this weekend. Insulate above and the walls of your attached garages if you can, keeps mine plenty above freezing. No issues with my liquids freezing.
I am in the process of buying a 3.25 acreage with established yard around Lincoln NE. It is late fall now and I have not seen the grass, plants, and trees in the growing season yet. My question is how should I attack spring, so I can know what I’m working with and how to correct or renovate next fall if need be? I have nothing but months to rack my brain and make a plan. Any help and direction would be nice. Thanks. Pod cast listener.

Pre-Emergent...with overseeing this fall and probably seeding in the spring. Should I put down the Mesotrisone this fall and in the spring as a pre emergent?
I would just apply in the spring if you're seeding at that point. It's not going to be a miracle worker so you'll have to have a plan ready for post emergent spraying early summer as well
I live in Central KY and last winter i would periodically pull the mower out of the shed and run it for a couple minutes. This made things MUCH EASIER when it was time to mow as previous seasons it would not start.
Thank you for sharing your insight, I really appreciate your videos. I live in central Oklahoma where we have yucky Bermuda grass to maintain. I've been wanting to overseed in the fall for sometime now and just don't know how. What are thoughts and recommendations for products to use. Many thanks in advance!!
Ryan, Can you, or should you roll the yard in late autumn? Here in Northern Indiana, it has been extremely wet this fall. Wondering if I could roll yard to smooth out ruts caused by being wet.
Aerate it and level it with sand. This will also make it a little less soft for the future when it's wet ground and you need to be on it. There are some good videos on that. Rolling it will cause compaction of the soil.
My final mow last year was around Dec. 15th. Living in StL. Maybe could have done another near Christmas to get most of rest of the leaves. At least the growth has slowed, but far from over. I am putting together my plan for next year, since only have the winterizer to throw down. All those plans I had for a renovation didn't happen, maybe next year,
I left some bird seed in a plastic Craftsman bin in my shed. The buggers chewed right through the hard plastic and left bits of red plastic everywhere. I'd recommend a metal container for your bird seed, it may be more tasty/motivating than grass seed, I wouldn't know since I threw all my grass-seed down by mid-fall.
Cracked the pump housing on my pull behind sprayer because it froze. Would be nice to get some ideas on how to protect it from freezing, just draining it doesn't work. Thinking about running some RV anti-freeze through it
Right on. Use stabilizer with ethanol or non ethanol gas. (Modern gas doesn't last long). Raking or removing leaves should be a thing of the past. Raise the mower deck and blow the leaves inward and just chop them up. Do it a few times as the leaves fall. Chopped leaves will quickly break down and disappear.
It does suck it’s the end of the season but we have next season to look forward to! We’ve already had almost two weeks of 20s for lows up here in North Dakota. Still the rye is growing though. Have had to mow multiple times this week and it felt so good!
I mulch every time I mow, only bag when doing renovation work for dethatch, or after a very wet mow to go back and pick up some of the clumps. More an issue of needing to mow more often so the grass is mulched very fine. The clumps will hurt the lawn a little. Mulching adds ~ 1#/1k sq ft of nitrogen to the lawn. If you are fertilizing properly, then maybe bagging every time is ok. I have averaged 6 days per mow this season, not enough, especially during the heavy growth months. I'd consider bagging once maybe every 4th or 5th mow at most. Leaves get mulched, but I'll bag at the end of the season to get debris off prior to winter.
His point is he can do exactly what Ryan recommends. It's,easy because he's not on the opposite end of the country dealing with different climates etc.Dale the douchebag.
I could mulch mow my lawn every single day in October, and by Halloween, Id be wading thru knee deep leaf mulch. I have to blow, rake and bag twice a week. I live in hell.
sound advice..thx. just a note...i usually cut it very short because of a vole issue and that seems to help a lot .... I tried last year for the first time a high nitrogen fertilizer just before the snow fell in late november... my lawn in the spring really popped! I will try again this fall to see if that was really the case....
i suggest rest, fluids, and tylenol severe cold and flu to help with the symptoms such as congestion, coughing, etc. hope you feel better soon! ✌🏼 from GB, WI
Man this tree in my neighboors yard hail stormed 35 gallons of acorns that got onto my yard there are moon craters from where stuff piles up I put dirt and got grass seed growing on some of that area
So I planted some TTTF and Texas Bluegrass about 11 days ago here in Louisiana. It germinated on day 6. However we had a bad storm today and I got some soil erosion. Do you think the seedlings will bounce back? Is there anything I should do to help them bounce back? Also, when should I overseed if I have some thin sports? Thanks!
It is hard to say but give it a few days after the storm to look at the long term damage or not. Most of the time it's minimal if it's already germinated. Within a few weeks I would overseed any really thin spots
Ryan! I lost probably 50-75% of my front lawn to grubs! Curative now, or wait and treat the hell out of the lawn next spring? I’m buying a 25lb bag of your seed in the spring. Top dressing, and I dethatched late September so aeration next fall. I live in Minnesota, skol Vikings!
Use a pesticide that Kills Grubs (read the directions closely because some of them say "Kills Grubs" and in the notes it says in gardens not in lawns). Next spring from June 1st to July 15th apply a Grub Ex style grub control (Scotts or Bayer). I plan to reach out to my local Site One for a granular that kills and prevents grubs for next year. I lost most of my front yard this fall too. I also plan to have Japanese Beetle traps next year to keep the grubs to a minimum.
The late September i went with a lesco fertilizer 26-0-11 i belive.... soon as october hit ive been going very agressive with 46-0-0 and had stunning results... however i can see my lawn is a bit thin...so Can i seed dormant so come spring tempetures again they reactivate? And is the 46-0-0 good enough fertilizer to get get the new overseeded lawn through the winter ,come spring?
You can try dormant seeding but it's never a 100% guarantee just depending on late spring conditions and how things go with that. You should be good on fertilizer to get you through.
How the time flies. Another season almost done. Thanks again for all the great content. It's going to be another long hibernation until you emerge again in spring.
excellent content Ryan! Keep up the great work.. Was wondering what your thoughts were on MP Rotors for lawn irrigation? I switched a few years ago but not sure its best for my st augustine grass. Appreciate any insight! Best, Dave
For 2-cycle engines, buy the Stihl fuel, fill it up and run it for a few minutes. It has 0 ethanol. For 4-cycle engines, run the last tank you have until nearly empty and fill it with high quality fuel, aka 0% ethanol, as ethanol attracts water. Correct me if I'm wrong anyone.
Ryan, what NPK do you recommend for a final feeding before winter? I am in PA with tall fescue. The big box stores around here all have high nitrogen in the 30s and that seems like a waste. Thanks. Do you use Milo at all heading onto winter or late fall?
Thanks for all your help and advice this year. My lawn is looking a lot better than it did at the beginning of the year. Couldn’t have done it without your channel! 2 questions, can you store liquid poisons outside in the winter (I’m in Iowa)? Will freezing and thaw change the effectiveness of it?
Just got my Rye going here in Tennessee for the first time. Hope to have a green yard for the winter instead of the nasty brown Bermuda... Keep the green alive!!!!

Great question!!
I use stihl fuel, works 👍 good
Ryan, what NPK do you recommend for a final feeding before winter? I am in PA with tall fescue. The big box stores around here all have high nitrogen in the 30s and that seems like a waste. Thanks. Do you use Milo at all heading onto winter or late fall?
I typically used ammonium sulfate in the past because I have higher pH and it's quick release
How late cam we spray bio stimulates
Thanks for all your help and advice this year. My lawn is looking a lot better than it did at the beginning of the year. Couldn’t have done it without your channel! 2 questions, can you store liquid poisons outside in the winter (I’m in Iowa)? Will freezing and thaw change the effectiveness of it?
I wouldn't let anything freeze if I want it to be used the next year
I'm waiting for Connors Tiff Tuff lawn guide to come out.
Hey Ryan, I have a question. How do you winterize a backpack sprayer?
I bring mine indoors as well
@@ryanknorrlawncare oh I bet the wife loves that! 🤣 Thank you I'll do the same
Is it safe to keep a lot of what seems like chemicals in one small area?
Just got my Rye going here in Tennessee for the first time. Hope to have a green yard for the winter instead of the nasty brown Bermuda... Keep the green alive!!!!
oh and just got in my first Ryan Knorr essentials gallons box this week.
Thanks have a good winter break
How many mowers do you have and what do you use them all for?
Thanks for the tips. Do you think it's a good idea to apply preventive fungicide like Propiconazole before the winter? I am based in Ontario, Canada.
Good question but I would think all of the snow would wash or drown it out too much to help.. but I'm following, I'm in MN
I did this last year on my low cut turf with a contact fungicide as well and that helped a lot where previously snow mold was an issue
Come to south Florida. The lawn season never ends here
