- The first video in a series about my new life in England. I find myself recently single again after 20 years and look forward to sharing the challenges I face and (hopefully) overcome as I journey forward into my future with my furry friends Stella and Fredfred by my side.
In this episode, Stella and I have a lovely walk on the beach, I visit the DIY store and I show you around my little home. I hope you enjoy it, thank you so much for being here. ❤️

I absolutely loved this episode for several reasons: Stella looks so happy and both look like they are settling in well, the beach is beautiful and I love the house tour, and not just because I’m nosy. Primarily, it’s because your ‘aesthetic’ is so comforting and cozy and colorful and I just love it so anytime you share it, it makes me happy. This time in particular though, it reminded me of a statement that I have been mulling over all week. It’s “It’s never too late to build a beautiful life.” and it refers specifically to regretting the years lost living in ‘survival mode’ after trauma, but (I swear I’m not stupid, despite how idiotic this is going to sound) for the life of me, I could not envision what a ‘beautiful life’ would look like. When you were giving the tour of your home, sharing the stories and history of everything, I suddenly realized I was looking at a beautiful life. This is what it looks like, and I’m so inspired. Thank you for sharing. It’s meant more than you can know.
It doesn't sound stupid to me, I have seen the memes etc about building a beautiful life and similar sayings and in some ways, it seems a little intimidating, like it's what you 'should' be doing. I agree, it's difficult to know how to go about it. I think I must thank the Slowstitch ethos that has spilled over into the rest of my life. Trust the process, value materials etc. it's not always easy but it means so much to me that you say you are inspired. Thank you so much for that ❤️
This moved me to prickly eyes and a froggy throat. Life after trauma…how in the world does one envision that much less create it? But somehow we do. Somehow we do…communing with this group, with our Kathryn, IS inspiring. And uplifting. Makes the little things doable and we all know a few little things makes a medium thing makes a big thing.

Thank you for reminding us of that quote...and your comments about 'survival mode' after trauma. These days I keep my heart open for all of the little happinesses, like my cats soft purring body on my foot, the first morning cup of tea, a smile from a fellow walker...all sustenance while building a beautiful life.

I have been led by you all. When I talked a few weeks ago about why I was in England for so long, there were so many messages of support and people sharing their own experiences, it feels like a two way street or community, or sharing. Kathryn your new home is just lovely❤ Give yourself time to mourn what is lost, it’s very important. I’ve been a widow since my 40’s and you need time to reflect. Women are strong and resilient, and you are loved by this community. Seeing Stella so happy on the beach was a beautiful thing indeed.❤
Dear Kathryn, I don't know about a comment, I found myself writing a whole letter to you while I was watching and listening on my phone this morning. I laughed and I cried (secretly). So I went away and did a few other things. This is the abbreviated result!
I was very touched by the mixture of candour and reticence in your explanations of the changes in your circumstances, and how you feel about these changes and about your park home. Thank you for showing us the beach, which was lovely in sights and sounds. I almost felt I was there, only my hair was not blowing in my face, and - oh yes, I was sitting at the dining table and holding a bit of stitching. Thank you for showing us your new home, which you have evidently transformed from a dingy, mouldy and empty place into a fresh and clean place that is becoming more and more your home every day. I am so impressed at your DIY skills and how you are just getting on with it all. It was lovely to see how you are arranging your own things and planning more storage solutions. You are so resourceful.
I have just discovered a poet I didn't know (thank you BBC Radio 4 again) called Salena Godden. On the radio I heard her poem "Umbilical Cord" (I think) that has a line "the thread that never breaks". Today I googled her and found her poem "Welcome to Hope" in which she writes about "Home is a feeling not a place". This sounds so like you that I am wondering now if these were the words your chose on Monday for your Wonky Home piece when that is finished. (That was Monday so of course I cannot remember). My hope for you is that the home feeling will grow and flourish in your park home.

Hello Nina, I don't know Salena Godden I will look her up. I must see if I can get radio 4 through the TV, I think I should be able to. My words last Monday were from Tolkien about Rivendell. I am mostly happier than I have been for a long time, interspersed with moments of slight panic but they can be squashed with some effort. Sorry my response is so disjointed. I have also been sleeping a lot. My granny would have said I must need it. Lots of love ❤️ ps as I write this, I am listening to your sister singing jazz. She kindly sent me a CD. 😉😊

Oh how lovely to have the chance to get to know more of you and your journey as a single woman!❤ I had my heart broken when I was 47 and I have been alone ever since. I am now 75. It has been a long journey, but I have achieved so much in these 27 years . I have been retired for almost 11 years and have loved living the real me without having to present as a professional me. You will come to know yourself and love yourself in ways you have never known before. Today at the beach I bet there were moments when you were happy for no reason at all,(the best kind of happy).
I think making these videos will teach us all about what it is to be a magnificent creative woman.

Kathryn, after watching this video and reading the comments, tears are streaming down my face. There’s not much more I can add to what has already been said. I just want to bundle up every comment and say, “YES!, All the things, right there.” You seem to have become our ambassador of Creativity, Strength and Empowerment. As you mentioned, many of us, myself included in there, have been through the same and we have come out the other side stronger, wiser and honestly, if I dare say, happier. As I was watching it, all I wanted to do was help you with everything, as that is what I do and love to do, at the age of a very young 71. (That can’t be right, I’m still 40 something aren’t I ?!) I am Wittering now I think because I/we are getting to know you so well that I want you to know me. I will end this by telling you one physical aspect of myself.
I have long white hair like you and I wear it in a twist now, and I absolutely love it. Looking forward to more PHLT and CT.❤

What a lovely time - seeing your new home and the beasts settling in. After my first husband was gone, I often said the hardest time was becoming a whole person instead of half a couple. I did it and so can you - you are strong and resourceful!

Oh my! So delighted to see Stella's joy on the beach and to see you back together with your precious companions. Being a woman who lives alone with her cat ,and, who tends to watch her house get shabbier and shabbier, I am inspired by all the work you have done on your new home. It makes me realize that I CAN paint my own kitchen, sand and repaint the stair railings, hang up the pictures that are leaning against the wall. I don't need to wait for someone else to help me. I am learning so, so much from you in so many ways. And, the power of love and care in the community created by your generous teaching and sharing is just profound. There are strange moments when I freeze, like today the washing machine wouldn't fill. It's like I am waiting for Someone to take over and fix it. Then I realise there's only me. It was pretty simple, the tap on the water inlet pipe was closed. But I had to woman-handle the machine away from the wall to be able to turn it on. Then I pressed start again, water rushed in and the laundry got clean. Small, insignificant but a victory. Yes, you can do it. Anything you set your mind to. Love and hugs ❤️

You should be very proud of all you’ve accomplished….cleaning, hanging shelves, painting, sawing off a table….you are amazing and can do anything! Looks like you’ve got a little lawn outside which is wonderful for your plants. I could hear the spark returning to your voice just as I could see Stella’s tail wagging showing her happiness to be home with you! God bless you always!
Kathryn, you are going to manage this new chapter of your life just fine!!! I lost my husband 2 years ago and starting over without him presented challenges that I didn't know if I could do by myself. But oh how rewarding when each day is a different accomplishment!!! Thank you for your wonderful stitching videos that have sparked a new interest in slow stitching.

So happy to see a happy you and a frolicking😮 Stella. Love your little house. I lived in a park home for two years when my daughter was a baby. I found it cozy, easy to clean, and I could see my toddler from every room when she learned to walk.
Speaking of children, I hope your children are doing okay through all this. I know they’re older but it’s still an upheaval for everyone.
Thank you Judith, yes they are fine with it. My son is coming over for a week in October and they will both be here for a week at Christmas. I think they are looking forward to it just being the three of us and no Atmosphere if you get my drift. ❤️

Hello Kathryn! This video of yours was inspiring to me. I'm 60 years old and I'm in the process of making decisions very similar to the one you made. Tough but necessary decisions. There is an aggravating factor, which is the fact that I have a very delicate health and a fragile body. But, I am strengthening myself mentally, doing therapy and prioritizing myself to be able to withstand the changes that will come. I loved the beach and the small rocks with their beautiful colors. The view is perfect for creating a landscape with fabric and embroidery. I wish you the best in your new life and stay firm as you have been.💪💜

The immensity of the ocean can certainly put things in perspective! Any time you spend there is not wasted time. It's good for both physical and mental health. Good for you. I was married for 31 years and all of a sudden it was over. Now I am single and enjoying every minute of life. The first year was difficult but I made it thru because of my daughters and my friends. The only thing I can share with you is be good to yourself. Enjoy your new adventure.

Glad to see you are settling in to your new home Kathryn. So nice to see Stella having such a happy time on the beach. And wrestling with Fred Fred at home. I do appreciate how difficult it is to start again. I did so at 60 and moved into a house that was brown, nicotine stained and smelly. I redecorated, like you have, by myself. When I'd finished and moved in my grandson told his mum that "grandma's house lookes like a pretty little rabbit hutch" 😂. After a rocky start I now have a lovely life as I'm sure you will too. Like you I have kind and lovely friends. By the way I went to Somerton to the Hanging by a Thread exhibition. Very enjoyable, so nice to see the exhibits you had shown us I your video. Great to see things in reality. Both exhibitors are so talented. I think we're all going to enjoy your Parh Home Life thread too. ❤

Just watching this and really enjoying the views, the sea, the sounds of wind and waves. I too find myself single, after 44 years of marriage. My husband died at the end of June and I am having to adjust to a life where I have to make all the decisions on mt own. We moved just 3 months before he died, as I didn't want to be in our old home on my own, but there are things that need doing in my new home
I'm fortunate that I have 3 adult sons who live nearby and help wherever and whenever they can, but they have their own lives and families too as it should be. I am learning about gardening, because I have never done any in the past, and I am going to have to turn my hand to decorating, too. I find your videos and my sewing and crochet a big comfort, but also a distraction from what I should be doing, such as finishing sorting the house out

Hello Susan I am so sorry for your loss. I agree with Rosy, take it slowly and above all don't 'should' yourself. I heard Jude Hill say that once and it stuck with me. Your house is your home, if what you want (need) to do is sit comfortably in it, stitching or crocheting then do that. The decorating etc will happen in its own time. One day, you will want to do it and then I bet you can apply your creativity to it as you do to your textiles. It is still early days. Sending you much love and a big hug ❤️

Your new home is lovely! You have all the space you need for what's important to you. Love those doorknobs and plenty of cupboard space in the bedroom. The sofa bed is a great idea. I had to pause the video to admire the knitted cushion - stunning!

Thank you Mary, the cushion was a way to teach myself to knit fair isle with one yarn in each hand. 😁 Regarding the Rawl plugs, I am fairly sure there is wooden studding in the walls so as long as I can screw into those, I should be fine. I am pretty sure that is how the kitchen shelves were done, no Rawl plugs in the holes when I took the screws out. 😁❤️

Your home is YOU. As you gradually settle in, it will become all you wish it to be. I, too, have a cordless drill and it has come in so handy over the years. You've taken on a bit of a challenge - installing shelves, etc. It already looks wonderful. What an accomplishment. Be proud of your handiwork.

Welcome back to old Blighty Katherine. As a widow/single 70+ year old woman, I had to buy a cordless drill/screwdriver too so I could be independent and not rely on expensive help. Being NZ born, it’s in our DNA to be pig headed and go for it. As time goes by your new life will evolve into something wonderful. Loving your videos by the way. ❤

Totally agree with you you have to take time out to recharge, I have never experienced what you are going through, although we have had a tough year with my husband having a triple by pass, he is fine now however there have been difficult times and I found my self emotionally exhausted. Think grief is definitely not experienced with the lose of a loved one we experience grief for all sorts of reasons that life throws at us.
