  • Did you know that male kiwis are extraordinary among birds, taking on the primary responsibility of incubating the egg. For weeks, this dedicated father has diligently kept the egg warm and safe, leaving the nest only to feed and bathe (It is thought his damp feathers help maintain the correct humidity in the nest). The average incubation time is 70-80 days so this is a long, lonely vigil.
    5 - 6 days after hatching the young kiwi will venture out of the nest under the watchful eye of dad.
