    something I would like to add is that Chicago is more than the south side; the violence that plagues Chicago happens all over the city. it's not just a black person thing, no one ever goes to the west and North sides where there are shootings everyday. and also, to put things into perspective, in the early 90s, crime in Chicago was WAY worse, now with social media more people are exposed to it. maybe that exposure will bring real change eventually.

      It's very sad that many South Sider's have been lied to all their lives and don't understand just how relatively speaking their is more opportunity in this country than any other. Sure you can go to Nordic countries and maybe Germany and they will give you a bit of cash and housing for free. But, that does not satisfy the human sole.
      ...and not hard work wont get it either. You got to provide what others want in this country and you will go far. If you looking for others to provide for you ... you wont go no where... don't understand this huh

    This is an amazing series you guys have put together. Sadly, the people who need to see this the most probably wont see this, and they will just go off the notion that you need to put cops in these neighborhoods and the crime will go away. In fact, Chicago used stop and frisk at a rate 4 times higher than New York did at its peak for stop and frisk and it made no difference whatsoever. Its great seeing guys like Ja'Mal try and inspire people in his community, people need to actually listen to the people in Chicago and we we would be much better off.

    All four videos are great! They speak the thruth on life in Chicago for some.
    I would've loved if you made a
    video in a Hispanic community to showcase the same realities as in most Black neighborhoods in Chicago. My old neighborhood Back Of The Yards a predominantly Mexican- Mexican American neighborhood along 47th street and bordering Englewood would have been a great addition to your videos. Violence and the lack of social and economic opportunities in Chicago are not just a Black problem in Chicago.

      Yes. For some reason these same issues are ignored in the Hispanic community while constantly highlighted, yet NOTHING done about it, in the black community even though we are often together and in the same areas. Over east is a large Mexican and black population but with the way things are reported you wouldn't know we been living together over there for decades. It's like you guys don't exist, it's pretty f up.

    I have so much respect for this well spoken young man who has decided to help his community by being part of the solution rather than part of the problem. People like him will be the ones to change things. Hopefully he'll run for office and win one day..What Chicago needs are more people like this who actually " give a damn"..and want change..and are willing to take the time and put in the work. Each one teach one..It takes a village.. stand for something or fall for anything.. Get back to that level of thinking..Rise up and be the Kings and Queen's we were destined to be as black people.. Clean up communities, respect ourselves, each other, our neighborhoods. Support black owned business. Give the children a safe future to look forward to..Stop the senseless killing of one another. Put the guns down.. go to school..get a job. Do something productive with your lives. Don't end up a statistic.. defy stereotypes about the black race.. Get rid of the every man for himself, selfish, crabs in a barrel mentality..Do better..Be better...

    Just an obvious comment from someone coming from someone on the outside looking in... the problem isn't poverty, unemployment etc, it's cultural, the gang sub culture. Here in Australia we have the same sort of poverty in a lot of communities, especially remote communities. Yes there are high levels of crime, by our standards, but nothing like this. Even leaving first world countries out of it, look at other countries around the world, from India through Vietnam, many parts of Europe, Africa etc, people live in poverty but are not killing each other like they do in American cities. Face it, it's the people and their culture that's the problem.

    • @jumpingonoffthejet9377
      @jumpingonoffthejet9377 5 років тому

      Nope nice try though. As a person who’s actually in the inside it’s because of Racism, Segregation, and poverty. When you deny education, up to date housing, and treat people like animals for 400 years this is what you get. This has nothing to do with culture Black people don’t want to live like this. And you’re a lie it’s even worse in other countries. Children and people are being raped in killed way more than the states.

    Chicago has not had a Republican mayor since 1931
    Detroit has not had a Republican mayor since 1962
    St. Louis has not had a Republican mayor since 1949
    Milwaukee has not had a Republican (sort of) mayor since 1916
    Baltimore has not had a Republican mayor since 1967
    And so on. These are among the highest violent crime cities in the U.S. What is that old expression about insanity? Doing the same thing over and over but expecting a different result?
    Meanwhile, cities like Plano, Texas, Anaheim and Irvine California have some of the lowest crime, with a much more mixed/leaning Republican Mayoral composition. By the way, the current Mayor of Plano, Harry LaRosiliere, is black and Republican.
    So it isn't about race, it's about culture and policy. Are there exceptions? Sure, but the pattern seems pretty clear.

      @vjhicks8533 5 років тому +1

      kev3d You aren’t really trying to compare Plano Texas and Chicago are you? I grew up in Plano and it’s not exactly diverse. In the early 90s it was over 90% Caucasian and very upper middle class with of course a strong tax base to go with those upper middle class incomes. While the demographics have shifted with upper middle class folks from Asian countries and India moving in lots of folks from India came in for tech jobs. (And FYI there are “whispers” of white flight because those Asian kids are making things a little too competitive in math class... but that’s a different topic.). It’s not a city that is dealing with nearly a century of forced segregation and exclusively lower classes in the area. The tax base gave Plano among the best public schools in the nation, not the worst.

Break the generational curses of poverty and dependence on the govt to get you out of your situation. Stop blaming white people for issues that plague the black community. Ownership and accountability is needed. Children do not come out of womb gang-banging and violent. This is learned behavior from the environment. If blacks don't take responsibility for their actions and hold themselves accountable to promote positive influences and neighborhoods, then who else will...just saying🤨

The first step to be present for children , is to pay for half the living expenses . You know how expensive it is to give kids a halfway decent life? Many American men are not used to, and they are not willing to take care of their kids. They do not even go halfway , most woman have no choice but to be mother and father at the same time everyday. Anybody male or female should not have more kids than they personally can afford without having to raise them on public aid.

    This series has been informative but a little too left leaning. Is the world to be convinced that black people are killing at such high numbers each other because of racism? As a black person who has been all over the country, this is insulting because you can go into poor neighborhoods populated by other races and not see half of the violence that you see in Englewood or Chatham. This issue is an internal issue that black need to address. What can we do to stop killing each other and stop blaming others for what we are doing to ourselves?

    I watched your series on I think you've produced a documentary series that explains how the Chicago was and is today. I think now you should investigate the guns situation in the City of Chicago. You should begin with a US Supreme Court case Mc Donald v. City of Chicago (which struck down the strict gun laws which were in place) to the trafficing of illegal guns to Chicago from neighboring states, because gun violence is a big part of the problem and it has turned some areas into war zones.
    Economic development (which is the answer to turning many of these communities around) can't be attracted until the gun violence is addressed...there's a little food for thought

    Is she for real about being a Chicago native? She sounds nothing like one and hasn't been to Harold's before??? She doesn't exactly have the authority to rip into people for fleeing the city when she hardly knows the place and in fact moved off to San Fran herself...

    Jobs, birth control, National Guard. And blackout social media for residents of Chicago under 25. Facebook and ig live is fueling a shit load of conflict.

    unfortunately it's more then "opportunity" in a big city, if your block has no opportunity you can hop on the bus for 5 minutes and find opportunity. This problem is much deeper. When they tore down the projects and relocated all the families, the crime followed, regardless of the new opportunities in the new area they lived. This problem is deeply inbeded in these people.

      No kidding .... people risk their lives traveling thousands of miles to get to this country!!! Other people wont travel 5 for opportunity because certain people have brain washed them into thinking uncle Sam is gonna bail them out.

    Its funny you say theres so much violence and you need jobs but the violence has to stop before people open up a business, owning your own business is a nightmare and i would never open my business in a community where bullets are flying. It doesnt take more than a few bad months of sales to go out of business. Perhaps more security around to secure safety at the new businesses would start something going. Definitely need security 24/7 around any area up for business

    How can you see a 2 year old - killed - how can you not be affected? Who killed the child? Black on Black violence. Stop the blame game. Good on J for trying to do good. Get rid of the guns and drugs.

    I Love Chicago it's my home. but We have to get rid of all these gangs and criminals to o many people have died for idiotic reasons. it's horrible to say but the direction some of these neighborhoods are going it seems like Chicago is never going to recuperate.
