    Good of you to adress this! In The Netherlands there are no good hay based pellets in the shops. Cheap ingredients is whats they use. And lots of grains are added. My piggies love them, but always grew fat. And got sick. So we changed their diet to lots of greens, tasty hay and I decided to make my own pelletmix. I found a webshop that sells timothy hay pellets, pellets made of nettles/dandelion and other vegetables or herbs. For vitamin C we give them a piece of bell pepper everyday. Or sometimes a little tablet of vitC🍋. (But not too often because they contain sugar)

      I too make my own pellet mix. Here they sell so many hay and hay adjacent products, but separatelly from any usefull mix (mostly containing seeds which are a nono) so I have many little plastic containers I put their dry food and snacks in and then mix and match in their bowl and look like an alchymist while doing it :D also those small batches of food are great for noticing which ones your piggies like and which are left in the bowl last and I adjust buying them. Their most fav are pea flakes and lucerne pellets

    I buy my pigs Complete by Versele Laga. They love it. I buy 3 to 4 bags a month. Once again they love it. 😊I buy it from CHEWY and it's always fresh and I get super fast delivery. 😊 It's not too expensive either. A 3lb bag is about $15.00 dollars. They eat it up like crazy. 😊

    Great video! It seems more and more, the food is looking colorful and have added things to appeal to the piggies parents and not to the overall health of the piggie. Looking at the labels is getting more tough, as everyone starts off with Timothy based hay, and then add on the additives. Soy is a big one and the ones that say salad and add seeds and other things not good.The same for Timothy based enrichments, that have potato starch in them. Hey Scotty, a extended to this video as an idea for another one! Thanks again!

    I started off giving my piggies Oxbow Essentials and I’m switching them to Oxbow Garden Select because it has no grain or soy. Right now their mix is 50/50 til my supply of Essentials is lower. Me and the piggies have been really happy with Oxbow 😊

    I didn’t know guinea pigs were a thing but my niece got one and then found out she didn’t like it so I wouldn’t let her do anything stupid with it and now he’s mine. I’m so glad I found your site because like I said, I had no idea that these were a thing but he’s been so much fun and he’s starting to come around and I’ve got him green pellets and he loves them and he loves his Timothy hay, so I just want to say thank you and me and Gus are big fans.👍

    Years ago I scrupulously pored over ingredient lists of many different brands and actually found that the Oxbow Garden Select Rabbit Food has the exact same ingredients and in the same amounts as their Adult Guinea Pig Food. It even has vitamin C which rabbits don't need (though our piggies get liquid vit C daily so it's unnecessary). Why does this matter? It's the exact same product, just marketed differently, and it comes in larger bags and is less expensive. Cha-ching! Been feeding it to our piggies for years and they are all quite happy. :D

    I use Plain Garden Select pellets. Also, I have a question.
    My guinea pigs are not eating their hay as much as they used to. I think it might be stale? I get Timothy Hay bale from Tractor Supply. Should I switch it out?

    • @ScottysAnimals
      @ScottysAnimals  8 місяців тому +1

      Definitely make sure you are replacing the hay everyday and removing hay that has been soiled. I found Tractor supply hay to be good quality, but hay is a seasonal product. Adding an herbal blend or foraging mix into it sprinkling it on top can be a great way to get Piggies interested in it. You can also try to find hay by the bale at a feed store and that will save you money.

    How much oats do we add?
    What about grain free/soy free? Isn’t that better?

    I’m thinking of getting two females from a shelter and I already have two boys. Should they be in separate cages and if they are how far?

    • @angeliqueruis4520
      @angeliqueruis4520 8 місяців тому

      When you have two unneutered boys that live harmoniously together. It can be a challenge for them when you put two guinea pig ladies in the same room. Although they would live in a separate enclosure, the boys would smell them and could start getting quarrels and damage each other. There are boars who can’t be bothered when females live in the same room. They can live with another boar despite the fact that in another enclosure, there are females.
      If I had two males I would not get two females, but that’s just what i would do.
      It’s less complicated I guess.

    You should never feed them what they sell in pet shops! They need lot of grass, some fruit and veggies, tree branches.
