Just wanted to thank you Tom. I literally just watched your videos to prepare for the AP exam and I ended up getting a 5! Some of your videos actually covered questions that were on the test.
Your enthusiasm for the subject and your clear voice makes paying attention easy, while reviewing is surprisingly enjoyable. Thanks for the great video!
Well done, by the way. You're very enthusiastic about European history, which makes the lectures more understandable and easier to focus on. Keep up the great work.
Tom Richey, thank you so much for the videos! I am a college student in Houston Texas going for a business degree but am becoming more and more fascinated with European History as I explore the different periods and found one of your videos while trying to explore the period of German Unification during the 19th Century. Fortunately I found one of yours. There is just so much to learn and it is impossible to get it all without picking up a book every once in a while, but I am finding informational videos increasingly convenient and useful to watch or listen to, especially yours.
Glad I can help you learn! I value people like you who watch my lectures for their own edification. One doesn't have to be a historian in order to benefit from being educated!
You're a lifesaver! My AP Euro class was just during first semester, so unfortunately I have forgotten everything I knew and the exam is in 9 days. This is a great refresher. I love how you incorporate your class!
Mr. Richey: Thank you very much for all of these fantastic videos and your wonderful hard work and concise yet relevant encapsulation. I am a humanities person who was, for various reasons, pushed into other fields and am now going back over material and periods in history I have been drawn to and fascinated by for years. Very helpful, please keep going with it, very good job.
writeract2 Thank you so much for the kind words! I'm blown away by how many people are learning because of these videos I record in my classroom and my basement. As long as you keep watching, I'll keep producing!
Hi! I just wanted to thank you for putting up these videos. They were a great review for me when studying for my AP Euro exam. I ended up with a 5, so thank you a bunch!
Mr. Richey. A shout out to you and your youtube videos. I'm in class right now as we prepare for the Friday exam (dead week). Three weeks ago I copied the youtube addresses on my website for students to get to your lectures. Well, every last one of them are tuned into them. From the Renaissance, Industrial Revolution, to the Cold War, my students are plugged into your lectures. Thank you and keep it up! Regards,
Thanks for subscribing, Ajey! The High Renaissance is the Renaissance at its peak - sort of the middle, same way the "High Middle Ages" is distinct from the Early and Late Middle Ages. The High Renaissance lasted from the 1490s-1520s, and would include the works of artists like Michelangelo, Leonardo, and Raphael. Donatello was an artist of the early Renaissance. I've got another video on Renaissance Art - it's a slidecast that goes into all that.
Second times the charm on the AP exam. I can't thank you enough for having these videos. I had an nervous breakdown and failed. My to many people gave up halfway through the class and so by the end of the year they ended the class. My only things to study with are the book and your videos. If it weren't for these videos I would have the hope to try again. Thank you 😊
for kids who don't have the privilege of ap, courses that try to put all the pieces together, for kids who love people and the big stories without a means to get the full story. Its good hard work on your part Mr. Richey, you should get an award. super love it for all kids.
Thank you so much! You're such a great teacher. This is my first week of AP Euro and it's not as easy at it looks. I found it quite difficult trying to comprehend what was going during class and I am so relieved that I found this video.
+Mari Glad I can help! I have a playlist with dozens of videos like this for AP Euro students. Looking forward to helping you prepare for your exam this year.
Mr. Richey, I enjoyed this little review of the Italian Renaissance. It helped me study for the final and gave a good quick insight of all that the Renaissance consists of. -Daley
Dude, I didn't know that Petrarch coined the term "Dark Ages". Thanks for that story about him climbing the mountain too. Good information! Somehow I'd never heard any of that in my undergraduate history studies.
Thanks for the lessons. Im taking the AP Euro test in May without actually taking the class (Its not offered at my school), so review videos like this are really helpful.
If you've talked to the AP Euro teacher and it's an option, GO FOR IT! I've got plenty of e-lectures up on the Renaissance and Reformation, so if you're willing to do the back work, then it shouldn't be a problem. If you haven't subscribed to my channel, please do so I can help you on your way to passing the exam!
Thank you so much for these videos! I've been watching them throughout the year, and I'm going to binge-watch all of them tonight before the exam... Also, would you be interested in some indulgences? "As soon as the coin in the coffer rings, the soul from purgatory springs"
Thank you Mr. Richey... You are an amazing teacher. You are a part of my generation, I believe and as such we learned how to make history relatable for kids & young people. Bravo!!!
Glad to hear it, Daniela! I'll be making more videos, so please let me know how I can help you, when tests are coming up, etc., and I'll post new material based on those recommendations.
Glad I could help, Matt! I just finished editing my video on Machiavelli, which I'll upload tonight. SUBSCRIBE so you'll know when I update with another Euro video. I know reading that text can be a real drag! Haha
HAHA! Whatever works! What are y'all studying right now? I'll be posting some new videos, soon - hopefully, I'll keep those A's coming your way now that you've subscribed!
The Northern Renaissance is a matter of geography, as distinct from the Italian Renaissance. This describes the Renaissance in places like England, the Netherlands, and the German states. Erasmus and Thomas More and their works (Praise of Folly, Utopia) are most likely to show up on the exam. I'm planning to film an e-lecture on the Northern Renaissance. When is your test? Maybe I'll see if I can get it posted before then!
Great Video! I was able to further my knowledge about the different aspects of the Italian Renaissance including the values, religious views, and accomplishments of the specific period of time. Also, learn the origin of influential figures during this time and their personal views! Thank you!
Not really. I've been teaching Western Civ/AP Euro in some capacity since 2007 and have used so many textbooks that I just tend to teach content, now, rather than depending on a textbook. In class, I assign my students readings from the Kagan text and Ethel Wood's coursebook, but my lectures focus on exam content without regard to what's in a particular textbook.
Great lecture, *****! The enlightenment of classical studies will surely keep dialogue flowing at our Thanksgiving dinner table. That's what happens when you blink and your daughter is in grad school. :)
I noticed that your videos cover more of the first half of my AP Euro class. Is it possible that you can cover the second half of European history, such as the Congress of Vienna, World War I, World War II, etc?
actually the Renaissance -artist; architect; writer - Georgio Vasari- used the italian word "rinascita" meaning "rebirth" to describe the era which he lived.
thank you Tom for the video though there is one thing tickling my mind that we all know that Thomas Aquinas already translated Greek philosophy works from Arabic. He calls Aristotle "The Philosopher" and Averrroes (Ibn Ruşd) as the "commentator" Europe already knew about Ancient Greek works in 13th century. Than your comment on Turks' closing down the Greek universities and Greek philosopher's fleeing to Italy is not quite accurate. This could be the claim of some that do not want to give the credit of European enlightenment to the Andalusian Arabs.
Yes, Aquinas and others read Aristotle during the Middle Ages, which had been translated into Latin, but Plato was not translated into Latin until the early Renaissance. Pico della Mirandola in his Oration on the Dignity of Man makes a reference to a notable Saracen scholar, which adds some credibility to the points you make. Perhaps, the Turks closed some universities and not others? One of these days, I would like to take a deeper look into the Islamic Golden Age.
With about a week and a half left till the AP exam, I am going to brush up and watch every video on this playlist. Any other beneficial tools/things to do that you know would help get me ready?
At my university, Kings College London, we study early modern europe beginning in 1500 so I cant use much of these examples but thank you all the same.
I'd like to thank you for making these videos because I do not like the way the book is worded and it does not communicate well to me. However, the way you put it, I do understand and it is helping my grades quite a bit. Also you look like Chris Pratt
when you've been watching these videos all day long and it's now well into the AM and the test is tomorrow and all you hear is Tom Richey's voice saying "Renizonce"...
Hi Tom, very helpful video! I subscribed! Just one question: What is the difference between the high renaissance, early renaissance and northern renaissance?
Hello Mr. Richey. Thank you for making such great videos. I would like to comment on one point. As far as I know, the Arabs translated the books of Aristotle and Plato into Arabic and these Arabic translation were further translated into Latin and other European languages. The Ottomans had no influence on that. Best Regards. Emin
Hi! First of all thank you so much for taking your time to make these great videos. I have a question. This year I started taking AP Physics, but I just realized that it wasn't for me and that I should have taken AP Euro. Do you think I'd be able to catch up with four chapters in AP Euro (that's how much they've covered so far)? Thank you! :)
plan for today: somehow watch all of the ap euro playlist
plan for tomorrow: somehow remember all of this for the exam

Hingle Mcringleberry good job! i’m watching this 2 days before my exam 😂😂
I have a question- about how many hours did you study? Just so I get an idea on how much I have to study to get a good score.
how else did you study for it besides the videos?
all-nighter before the mid-term. watch all the videos. I like it.
I hope your test went well!
Your enthusiasm for the subject and your clear voice makes paying attention easy, while reviewing is surprisingly enjoyable. Thanks for the great video!

Got me that Chapter 12 test tomorrow.
Glad to hear it! I've got some lectures on the Reformation, as well, and will keep posting new videos, so come on back anytime for some more review.

Thanks.

Sanjana Vinjamuri ended up with a 3. i’ll take it since the exam was pretty difficult imo
this is very helpful for the AP Euro Class, the AP Exam and its DBQs and FRQs. Thank you!
