  • Katie, Anthony, and I ventured out of Westport into the big blue of the Pacific looking for some Kings and Coho Salmon. WDFW had announced two days earlier that Marine Area 2 would close at the end of the day on Saturday the 24th. The ocean forecast was a good one for Thursday August 22nd, with a swell of 4’ at 11 seconds so we knew this would be our last chance for the season. The bar was a bit bumpy, but when we got offshore the wind waves were almost non-existent, making for a pretty smooth day on the water. WE HAD NON-STOP ACTION from the first drop. I have no idea how many takedowns we had, how many fish we hooked, or how many we released. I lost count pretty early on, and since I lost an hours worth of video off of one camera and another 2 hours off of another, my best guess is we touched 35-40 fish. Needless to say, I have edited the heck out of this video... even with the lost footage, there was just too much action to show. This was a bittersweet day out there for me, as I just couldn’t find the large Chinook. With all of the rain we had, it was obvious they moved and when making adjustments of depth contours I guessed incorrectly and went the wrong way (I received intel from a friend who found them… I went into the 240-250 range when I should have went back out to 300-320). I know I shouldn’t be disappointed, but this Westport fishery has spoiled me! 😃 We ended up the day with 4 nice hatchery coho, a barely legal 23” chinook, and Anthony caught a mackerel when I told him to try fishing at 15’ on the wire! 🤣 And by the way, Anthony cooked that fish for dinner on Thursday night and told me it was absolutely delicious! If you have read this far, thank you so much for your support in watching our videos. I know I come off as pretty intense and anal out there, but it comes from a place of true passion and love of getting us on the fish. Anyways, the Kings and ocean Coho are finally trickling into South Puget Sound, so expect to see some content from our home waters in Marine Area 11 over the next 6 weeks or so! Until next time… stay safe and thanks again for watching! 😃🤜💥🐟

Any idea what your water speed is, it always looks like your kicker is operating at a pretty high rpm

@@jdalley5192 2.5-3 mph (over ground) for Chinook & Coho usually… I don’t go by the speed though, I go by cable angle on the downrigger, so the rpm’s of the motor are going to change depending on current. I like 45° minimum, and usually a bit more. And also to be honest, the video might make it look like we are going faster than we really are. What speeds do you like to troll?

I don’t fish salmon with a down rigger but that all makes sense, it just looks and sounds like you’re going faster than that.
