After 2 months of use I can say that this laptop is the best I have ever used. I edit long videos in Premiere, no lags whatsoever, fast rendering. Incredible build quality, and as a professional writer, the best keyboard I've ever layed my hands on.
Raphaela Edelbauer hello, I know that this comment is very late but I wonder what were the specifications of your T470 used to edit the long videos. Thank you!
For years, all of my laptops have been Alienware laptops. So, my Alienware 14 will be a reference point here. 1. Build quality: Premium, does not appear or feel cheap, sleek. I love the soft-touch black of the exterior. I must mention that I love (absolutely love) the fact that the laptop does not taper to the front like most ultra notebooks do. The thickness is uniform all around the T470. Lenovo says, "Every ThinkPad laptop undergoes 12 stringent military tests and over 200 quality checks. So, you can rest easy knowing that your T470 is more than capable of surviving the bumps and bruises of everyday life." I believe the machine was designed to be durable, but I would be wary of bruises and bumps. The T470 is not one of the IBM "tanks" of yesteryear. 2. Keyboard: Every review I've seen says the T470 keyboard is great. I agree. I will say, however, that it is not perfect. I dislike the half-key arrow keys at the bottom right. I would rather that the positions of the Fn and Ctrl keys are switched. Even though there is a setting where the functions of the Fn and the Ctrl keys can be reversed, this will not change the physical position of the actual keys. The backlight of my T470 is adequate, but it's not on par with the keyboard light of my Alienware 14. To be fair, the T470 is not a gaming machine; so, I never expected it keyboard light to be comparable to that on an Alienware machine. The trackpoint duplicates some of the functions of the trackpad. It's an alternative for pointing and scrolling, and it does a good job in this respect. Those who are used to it, swear by it. For me, it wouldn't matter much if it is discontinued. Where there is a very responsive trackpad, such as you would find on a MacBook, the trackpoint would be more or less redundant. 3. Trackpad: Excellent! The size is just perfect; not oversized; not undersized. The one thing I don't like about the trackpad is really negligible. I like to see that a trackpad is equidistant from both the right and left edges of a laptop. The trackpad of the T470 is offset to the left, presumably in order for it to be under the spacebar. 4. Hinge: The hinge is excellent for one thing. It lets you tilt the display back up to 180 degrees. Awesome! The stiffness of the hinge is what gives me a little worry. If the laptop is on your lap, and you have the display tilted backward beyond 135 degrees, you cannot be very shaky or bouncy. Otherwise, the display will begin to fall further down, on its own, until it can fall no further. The hinge of my Alienware 14 solid. Its display stays at any angle you place it, however bouncy or shaky you with the laptop on your lap. 5. Display: First, when I unplug the T470 from power, the screen goes dark before coming back on. This is something I never experienced in any of my other laptops. Some have suggested that decreasing the refresh rate from 60 Hz solves this problem, but it hasn't for me. Might it be that the T470 is intended for indoor use only? The other day I took the laptop outside (and it wasn't a particularly sunny day) just to see how the display would be outdoors. At 100% brightness, it was as if I was looking at the screen through a tinted glass. Dark! I was disappointed. That was when I seriously began to ask myself whether I should return the laptop. And this display is the one with the 1920 x 1080 resolution. When used indoors, the display is easy on the eyes. With my Alienware 14, even at its lowest screen brightness, I often wish I could dim it further. You won't have that problem with the T470. In the dark, I'm able to dim the screen to a comfortable level. The problem is with outdoor use. The maximum brightness of the T470 is underwhelming. 5. Speakers: The speakers are okay but puny when compared to those of my Alienware 14. Again, my Alienware 14 is a gaming laptop. Expectedly, it's speakers should be more powerful, with more bass. I was actually surprised to see that the speaker on my cell phone (Huawei Mate 8) is about as loud as the speakers on the T470. It is my recommendation to use a headphone with the T470 in any noisy environment. 6. Weight and portability: This is one area where the T470 shines. The T470 is light and very portable, even with the 72 Wh battery. It is one of its selling points. 7. Battery: With the 72 Wh battery, you will be able to get 10 hours of continuous use. That is great, but it is not the 17 hours claimed by Lenovo. Here is another area when the T47 is superior to all of my Alienware 14. Battery life on all the Alienware laptops that I've owned sucks - badly. 8. SSD: By the way, I'd love to comment on the storage. I have a 1 TB SSD in my T470. The internet is awash with testimonies about how super fast SSDs are when compared to mechanical hard drives. There are certainly benefits in using an SSD versus a mechanical hard drive, but in terms of speed, I'm like mehhhh! I haven't seen any noticeable speed difference between my T470 and my Alienware 14 (which has a mechanical hard drive and no SSD). In fact, I think my Alienware 14 has better performance than my T470. In summary, the strengths of the T470 are its light weight and portability and its long battery life. I am, nonetheless, bothered by its lack of adequate brightness for outdoor use, and by the hinges, which are wanting somewhat in stiffness. Also, why does the screen go dark when I connect the laptop to or disconnect it from AC power? Why does it do that and how can I stop it?
great review! just bought one yesterday with the IPS display. unfortunately I put a screw through the motherboard of my t420 the other day but it's about time to move on! excited for the screen, lower weight, smaller size, and battery life. every other brand is a non starter due to non modular design and lack of touch point mouse
I am planning to buy a t470 but that laptop doesn't have a fingerprint scanner and has a dual storage, it says it has a slot for both ssd and HDD. Is that fake or what?
Your review is most appreciated. I'm looking to acquire a modestly-priced laptop in early 2020, pretty much exclusively for text editing, and this unit has everything I need - except for a touch-screen, which can come in really handy at times. But considering I can buy one in Jakarta for around $560 it is tempting. Thanks a lot.
I have such a strange problem, namely I bought two identical - post-leasing ThinkPad_y 470 20JN-S10V35 and despite the fact that they have the same BIOS version of the graphics system installed and the same Intel driver, in one the maximum screen resolution is 1920x1080 (and it should be) and in the other max it - 1600x900. The same is shown not only by Windows but also by the Lenovo Test run in the BIOS of the Motherboard. It is the same in Win 10 and Win 11. GPU -Z shows differences between the two Paws in BUS WIDTH - (good)-128bit / (bad)-64bit and Bandwidth (good)-34.1GB/s and (bad)-17.1GB /p. In addition, both laptops work decently - only the one with 1920x1080 has a nicer, brighter and more contrasting image. What do you think could be causing this?
Nice honest review. I wish the display was a little brighter but otherwise a great machine. Trying to decide between the T470 and the X1 Carbon 5th gen. Very tough decision.
It is indeed a hard decision. I'm facing the same one. It get's somewhat harder if you consider the t470s also. For me, i've been able to condense it down to extreme portability vs. a tiny bit more power and ports. Since I personally do not need that extreme portability, like that longer battery runtime and the tiny bit more cash in my pocket, I'm currently leaning a bit more towards the T470. What are your thoughts on that? I'm quite sad that Lenovo seems to have not to put a thunderbold connection into that T470p. What a shame, it would have been a nice contender also.
I ended up going with the T470s (I currently own 3rd gen X1 Carbon). It came down to the new X1 Carbon and the new T470s. Very similar specs. I strongly recommend opening a Chat session. Tell the rep you are having a difficult time ordering online. The sales rep will cut you a better deal than you get just ordering online. I ended up getting the Ultra Dock and 3 yr warranty+accidental breakage for free. Over $300 in goodies. I ended up with the T470s mainly because I wanted the higher def anti-glare display and more memory than the X1 provides. Both units are under 3lbs and have batteries that supposedly last over 12 hours. Plus it seems you get more for your money in virtually the same size package. I also like that I can continue to use my Lenovo charger, which I have several, with the USB-C/Thunderbolt for high speed backups. It literally has all the ports one needs including a media card reader. You get the same configuration as the X1 but with more memory (20Gb instead of 16Gb) and several hundred dollars less. Neither machine is cheap. It will cost over $2,000 fully configured. But you can't go wrong with either machine. Good luck!
Received the T470s about a week ago. So far it's been great. No bloatware (other than Lenovo Companion which I immediately uninstalled). I loaded it up with i7, 20Gb memory and 1Tb SSD. Super fast, very light (can't tell the difference in weight between my X1 Carbon 3rd gen), tons of ports. I also got the UHD screen, which I strongly recommend. It's a big improvement over the standard display. The battery life is 6-8 hours at high brightness, probably 8-10 hours if you dim it down. The keyboard is better than the X1 Carbon (3rd gen), there seems to be slightly more travel in the keys which is nice. It's also slightly thicker than the X1 Carbon (not a lot) but same dimensions. The slightly extra thickness (about 1/16th of an inch) is to support the Ultra Dock which locks right into the unit. I really like it. Great machine so far. Be sure to get the high def screen and Ultra Dock. Well worth the cost.
To me the choice is definitely in favour of T470 as it allows up to 32 GB RAM which these days is almost a necessity to be able to run nested VMs (ESX virtualized on VMware Workstation).
Hi. would like to find out do T470 20HD000VUS comes with win 10 pro signture edition or just pro. or is it an option i have to make. Just had chat support with lenovo, They got some most disrespectful staff. Thanks in advance.
Hi, thanks for awesome review! )) Could anybody tell me, does touchpad has such good work with gestures as dell xps 13/15 (9350/60, 9550/60) ? Course Thinkpad t560 has poor work with touchpad gestures in comparison with dell xps. Thanks a lot!
Reading up forum sites, most Thinkpad users say this has the dimmest screen among the Thinkpads. For that, it's a deal breaker for many. What do you think? How bad is it? I am ready to get this after looking at various models but just worried about the screen, which they say is only 230 nits (ideal is 300 nits). I am thinking of using it mostly for coding with some graphic design work. Please let me know. Thanks.
does the IPS touch screen have glass? or is it a glossy screen with touch capabilites? and does anyone know the actual weight of this thing with the ssd option and 16 gb ram
great video i bought a refurbished one for $350.. will turn it into a portable linux machine i think linux will do fine on these machines. and for what i need it for well just something to have portable around my place and if i need to take something on the road it is a nice laptop and whats nice is that i can upgrade it too.
I don’t understand why people complain about not understanding accents. I guess I am just exposed to different types of people and I love any accent. Keep giving these reviews. I like that you’re doing thinkpad reviews. My favorite laptop brand.
Thanks For the Video. I am going to purchase T470 Model: 20HEA02EIG (India) One thing I would like to Know about This laptop is Does this have WWAN port? So I can upgrade Second Hard Disk ( SSD )
this laptop will be the offical school pc where i live. it is the low end model with only a core i3 4 gb ram 128gb ssd, so i hope it is worth the 120 dollars per year i have to pay
For school use? Amazing. Don't expect to play games on it or do heavy stuff, but for watching videos (unless it has HD screen only) and writing notes etc., its amazing. Maybe even overkill.
Great review Sir. Im a diehard OSx Mac user and am looking for a dedicated Linux machine. You may have helped me nail it with this Thinkpad. Too many choices but you helped me finalise. Does Linux sound good to you?
Know it old but I dual boot 2 Linux distros exclusively. This machine runs them flawlessly fast! Ubuntu Studio and Kali. I have the 32gig but the I7 is the 2 core but the high ram helps!
Last night stepped up onto my 10 year old x61 broke the screen and decided to buy new laptop. Almost bought this, but fortunetly noticet that this have some shitty hipster keyboard. By the grace of god there was a refurbished T420 in local computer store for 240€ bought it, swapped hdd with my ssd with arch linux on it and it even booted. Guys, I feel so fkn lucky today :)
zigmundslv I'm using a ThinkPad t520. I really like the keyboard. However it's time to get a new one. I'm thinking of getting a newer model, though those new keyboards on all the new models make me really hesitant...
Im choosing between the 470 and 470s right now and you forgot one thing the 470 does not have - the option for 2560x1440 display. Crazy how the 'slim' model has this but the regular does not...
Great point. Overlooked as I was only going off with the review unit and its display onboard. Me personally as I age, higher resolution is getting tougher on the eyes as my vision is going more messed up each day going by!!!! :)
Another great review LOL. How about actually turning on the product you're reviewing genius, instead of just repeating what's in every available spec sheet!!! A picture speaks a thousand words! I came here as I was curious about the graphics and sound, this video accomplished zero!
After 2 months of use I can say that this laptop is the best I have ever used. I edit long videos in Premiere, no lags whatsoever, fast rendering. Incredible build quality, and as a professional writer, the best keyboard I've ever layed my hands on.
Was kannst du über das Display berichten? :)
How much hdd or sdd did u have?

Finally, I could find a real review of the ThinkPad T470, and a reviewer who's informative and really know what he's talking about. Thank you.
You don't need that background music.
I am using a t200 thinkpad for sevn years, this is gonna be my new one
great review! just bought one yesterday with the IPS display. unfortunately I put a screw through the motherboard of my t420 the other day but it's about time to move on! excited for the screen, lower weight, smaller size, and battery life.

Can't concentrate as music is too loud.

It does have a fingerprint scanner but this one i think doesn't support 4g sim there's no sim slot on the back
@@felixchigodora3396 It is inside the external battery compartment. Remove external battery and it is just to the right of center on the inside wall.

What about the fan noise and others emissions? Very important for students and meetings!

how about U-SIM card slot on this model ?
Does it have the LED light on the top of the display? You know, the traditional one..
Bro turn off your background music. It was good but i had to stop listening to you because of that background music.
Thanks for your review. Is the texture of the touchpad in 470 different than 450s and 460s?
Ive got t470, but only is not clear to me, is it possible to charge laptop using Type c port ? I tried Apple macbook charger but it doesn't work
Thats for apple macbooks not lenovos

Thanks
Screen is what we goin to look at for all day.. Make sure dont compromise with a bad one.. Dim screen is a big no-no
does the IPS touch screen have glass? or is it a glossy screen with touch capabilites? and does anyone know the actual weight of this thing with the ssd option and 16 gb ram
Can you use the laptop with one battery removed? I'm thinking about days when I don't need such long battery life.
Andrew C you can
Thank for you the review!
Does an SD-card stick out of the SD-card slot?
why the fuck is there even music in the background?
good review otherwise.
How can I activate the Bluetooth on Lenovo thinkpad t470?
Can you make a review of t470s just for comparison? Thank you!! :)
It recomanded to light gaming and work ??
Just get a console FFS.
Please remove that brutal music!
great video i bought a refurbished one for $350.. will turn it into a portable linux machine i think linux will do fine on these machines. and for what i need it for well just something to have portable around my place and if i need to take something on the road it is a nice laptop and whats nice is that i can upgrade it too.
Much more consumer understandable than Lisa techs review, thanks a lot!
I was looking for your Amazon link.. You'd do very well because this is one of the best reviews :)
I cant comment on that, because between the accent and the music I cant follow anything he's saying. No offense.
I don’t understand why people complain about not understanding accents. I guess I am just exposed to different types of people and I love any accent. Keep giving these reviews. I like that you’re doing thinkpad reviews. My favorite laptop brand.
Well explained , thanks
is it okay for a college student? as my school seems to be selling it at a good price
check out the thinkpad reddit
dude, the music shouldn't be louder than your voice...
Thanks For the Video.
I am going to purchase T470 Model: 20HEA02EIG (India)

Why not pickup an older model such as the T440 second hand?
Dette er high-end modellen, T470. L470 er standard pcen.
Great review, keep it up!
Nice review. Unfortunately the background music is a little too loud...
I liked a lot your review!
