My first ride on the brand new BMC Roadmachine SLR in top-end Dura-Ace Di2 trim - this model costs $12,999 but the range starts from $3,199. The new bike now has clearance for 40mm tyres, with features including downtube storage and an integrated light. While this first ride was short it gave me the opportunity to test some of these new features.

Bike looks smart. When are companies, besides Scott cause they did it right, gonna learn NOT to integrate lights? 3 hours for an ENDURANCE model is not nearly long enough. I hope there is a plug that comes with it so you can run a different light and not have dirt get into that gap.
Three hours for the rear light is quite disappointing. 😅
I bet it’s longer if it’s set to flash.
Borderline unusable then. I hope they provide a cap for that hole in the seat tube.
especially for an endurance bike haha
Haha I came on here to say that too! What do I do for the other 7hrs of the ride??
Woot, they are totally in touch. This is showing great return for the $1,000/bike R&D that has gone into these new frames. That and the integrated front light and anti-theft protection makes it well worth it.
I like the idea of the storage compartment, at least you can never leave the house without forgetting it.
But I hate the idea of getting shit into my carbon frame. David droped his bag on to gravel. I bet rough pebbles will rub the frame on the inside now.
The integrated rear light looks nice but won't add any value for me or anyone who has varia radar or rear cam light.
That's what I thought. At these price points surely they could add a radar to their integrated light so you don't need a Varia anymore
*and* you'll have an extra, unwanted hole (are any holes in frames wanted other than the Trek Mad One?)
Agreed. A blanking plug for the hole that remains with the light removed would be handy.
@@ekrano does come with a different rubber plate for using the non integrated light.
That rear light look ridiculous.
Dave giving us an update on local real estate is a bonus on this bike review!
Agree with the others… “why put an integrated light on this?” Providing something not needed. I have my rear radar already. No way I’m parting with that. I guess it offering something that cost them next to nothing.
Really like the BMC, but wish they provided colour choices within the models. I don't understand manufacturer's reluctance to offer paint options and at a reasonable price.
ikr.....
I would have liked to see what the other side of the bike look like. May as well show the whole bike.
Yeah, that color is 🤮
Colour choices for the whole Roadmachine 24 series are horrible. So are the prices.
Exactly. We even have to chose lower grade to get a preferable color…
Heavier than the previous model, and probably more expensive…great move 😂
@@Penalist they focused on compliance, so they openly saying the frame is heavier than the previous RM model. I currently ride a BMC SLR01 and my previous bike was a RM01, I upgrade my bike every 3-4 years but don’t see any incentive to upgrade from the previous RM
I am riding a BMC 01 Four (2023) and love it and having this with 40mm clearance means I could use it as a one bike does all which sounds great to me. I am lead to believe that BMC are not selling to UK shops so think they will miss lots of sales with this new range.
Hopefully you will get to test one in the UK.
17 mile drive and the pebble beach definitely is one of the best SCENIC bike routes ....
Just got one of these 01. Its a rad bike for sure! Yet to test out light run time. Bike does come with a blanking plate if you use your own light. Its a complete different piece of rubber around the seatpost. Looks clean. Also worked out the trick to removing the light, if you move the rubber piece up first the light comes straight out, same with install. Quicker once you know how. Light is not usb c, its micro usb. Being a mountain biker first, was looking for a comfortable ride, that still felt fast and zippy. Also something you could put a gravel tyre on for the odd ride. Think this ticks a lot of boxes, yes its expensive, but damn its a nice bike and I bloody deserve it. So leave me alone :P
My hometown, Monterey! Always cool seeing UA-camrs that I watch riding my local roads!
In case you’re wondering, my landlord for my business has a house on 17 Mile Drive: his house is 6000 sq ft, has 10 bathrooms, and is $4.5 million dollars. 😅
You are right David - it ‘s a magical place!
Quick Question, as a MD, if I may have any attribute of logic and having ridden my first gravel race, P2A in Canada. I noted that in mud/mixed gravel, even 35-38C tires seem to out-perform folks riding larger tires, several of the pros same/used the same - IF this is a fact, or at least mostly true, why are all bike manufactures pushing for larger tires (something that I like, and believe in too), when in race conditions/mixed terrain a super large tire is not optimal (maybe better in frank mud, although not clearly, and slower on road segments) - is this worth a video? What is known about performance in race gravel conditions and tire size in comparison to where the ‘industry’ is going - thanks!
Thanks for this. Too much proprietary stuff for me. That front end looks really slack.
Riding a RM01 Three the current gen. Very nice welcomed upgrades. When you do a full review please go to some detail on the revised geometry. I believe they made it a bit more relaxed than the older generation frame.
I don't like the lights. Integrated lights on an e-bike perhaps but not on an endurance bike.
Built in rear light is an absolute hard pass. Literally nobody asked for this.
Storage compartments have caused frame cracks the downtube is undwr a lot of stress
Also, the light having only a three hour run time? I would need at least two of those on a regular trading ride so that I had a light source runtime at least 6 to 7 hours.
Need to see a test using 40mm tires on rough roads in the UK.
Agree, hopefully they'll let me do that
Any word on when these will be available for purchase? Everywhere I've looked, only the 2023 models are available.
Liking the 1X options, think they are called X. The purple one looks cool! 💜
Have a 2022 Roadmachine One in 51. For an endurance bike, the geometry is more race-oriented (aggressive?). Didn't hear a discussion of the revised geometry for this year--shorter reach (379mm v 382mm), taller stack (550mm v 541mm), and shorter top tube (532mm v 537mm)--intended to give a slightly more upright riding position. Ngl, not seeing any upgrades here that would compel a change. For those of us running 28s and staying on the road, the wider allowance is a null point, and that light is set to become an annoyance.
Have been so looking forward to the updated road machine - although from the first impressions video it seems a bit underwhelming? Steering quite slack and not lively? I don’t think any lighter than the old? Seems heading more to an all road bike, than a viable option for a comfortable but fast road bike you can race? Look forward to your detailed review Dave - where you will unpack it all for us. Looks a beaut though.
Then try the Teammachine
Lovely, but for that money it should come with with a chauffer . Downtube storage and the rear light are nice touches. Very elegant overall.
Bold move making a built-in light. Initially, I think that alone would cause me to eliminate it from consideration. However, that storage is much more thought out than Canyon's TV remote battery door compartment, but, still, it seems you're locked into using those cages now.
Just a note to potential 17 Mile Drive riders - the road is free for bicycles, but cars & tour busses have to pay a toll. It really is a beautiful ride (about 20 miles if you do a loop through Carmel), especially when you have some sunshine and you get blues and greens from the water.
I think canyon really messed up their storage compartment and BMC really knocked that out of the park. I have a 2023 BMC Roadmachine 01 and it's probably my favorite modern bike.ive ridden.
I wonder whether the seat clamp (presumably in that triangular section below the top tube) effects the ease of removing/reinstalling the rear light?
Its a seperate hole. There is an insert that bolts in that the light actually goes in and out of.
3 hour run time on the light is ridiculously short.
Definitely a thumbs down to the rear light nonsense,
the bike looks great. I'm not convinced by these storage cubbyholes in the frame of new endurance bikes though. Just how waterproof are the closures? Having to carry a saddlebag is a (minor) pain but there's no structural integrity or water ingress issues, potential or otherwise. The frame surely has to be stiffened and therefore heavier to accommodate a compartment?
Also, I've always questioned BMC's decision to close off the drive side of the through-axle. If it's such a benefit to aerodynamics, what about the other, non-drive side? Surely the bike would be unbalanced! Maybe owners are intended to cover the bolt end with tape or some special BMC-supplied covering (probably $100 each)? I'm sure it makes absolutely no difference, but must provide a potential issue if anything ever goes wrong with the receiving end of the axle.
Is there an aero benefit to the rear light over one secured with a silicone strap e.g.? Given that it's situated in an area filled mostly with moving human I can't imagine there's any benefit. Seems like you'd have to have more than one light, especially since it only lasts 3 hours, and a) that ties you into BMC's proprietary solution, and b) undoubtedly, since it's BMC, it'd be more expensive than the mass market alternative, which work the same and have a universal mounting.
I do look forward to a more in-depth review of the new Roadmachine, on less perfect surfaces for sure.
Like the idea, but it’s another thing to break when it comes to the cover of the storage compartment and you can’t replace the bottle cage with anything else so if they run out of stock and it breaks, which it will, if you keep the bike for long enough, you may end up with no bottle cage in that area or a storage cover that doesn’t work either - don’t think I like this design. It might even be a dealbreaker for me.
I like my 2023 Roadmachine better!
with their new design you are unable to use a tailfin thru axle. 40mm tyre clarence sounds nice, but with this limitation you can not mount a rear rack
I'm an RM01 MOD 2021 owner and love it but I won't be going for one of these. I think the light and dedicated bottle idea are poor decisions but I like the rest of the bike.
Now what would be a further upgrade is outside cables.
Golf course is Pebble Beach! Hence the mega expensive houses.
USD$3K for the base model = AUD$6K 😢. I’d go for the base model Giant Defy which you can pick up for AUD$4K on sale.
You didnt just compare a BMC to a giant did you. Comon now :D
Who told these companies people are dying for more gimmicks on a bike?
An integrated rear light (and it only lasts 3 hours!).
A giant hole in the downtube - let me guess what that does to frame strength in that area.
Better to focus on the basics (geometry, production quality) than gimmicks.
frame strength is probably OK, but weight has to suffer, and water ingress will be an issue IMHO (sooner or later)
Looks a lot cleaner than a saddle bag flapping around. But yes, not needed as such. But neither is the di2, carbon wheels or disc brakes. I think bmc production quality is pretty damn good personally!
There's a new URS coming later in the summer. I'm saving my pennies.
Will you be testing it?
Not heard anything about it but hopefully BMC will let me test it if and when it arrives
$13k 😮
Great review on a cool road bike, appreciated… hard to appreciate the almost 2 million yen price tag, though 😢.
My god... 3 hours runtime for the rear light, probably a lot less in cold weather... why don't bike brands offer more bikes with integrated cable routing for dynamo powered lights? And spec them with dynamo hubbed wheels. Seems like a no-brainer for these type of bikes 🤔
Helmeth?
My Giant Defy Advanced Pro is 1/2 the price. This is another obscenely high priced bike
The proprietary / built in bottle cage as storage cover and rear light that only runs 3 hrs are gimmicks. Both would stop me buying the bike.
this bike makes me check my bank account...
Cool! But 40 mm!?
The storage capacity looks a bit pointless, looks like it barley fits a marsbar
Do they even sell those anymore? lol
A British guy goes to So Cal, his hands are freezing and the roads "too smooth"
Never happy haha! I was loving the smooth roads was just saying how not ideal for testing comfort of an endurance bike
3 hours on the light is useless, almost.
Nice bike, pricey.
BMC-ey!
Ridiculous price
good geometry but:
overpriced
that b.s integrated rear light 😂
and for 12k you mean i can not choose the frame color i want? good luck selling it BMC
Nice bike but £13K is very top end so it's competing with very best. That rear light looks a bit Micky Mouse and a 3 hr run time not enough. Be good to know weight of bike(I understand you weren't able which is fair enough).
Where is that road?
17 mile drive in Monterey
Looks like a Merida reacto in some ways. Which is Way cheaper, with probably better or same aero features. Would not be comfortable with that Massive hole in the frame.
Is the Merida Reacto reliable? I ask because I bought the Merida cyclocross in 2021 and have had countless issues with all components.
@@Penalist you're right, this one is much more endurance. the main difference seems the angle of the head tube and fork and thus more upright sitting. The aero aspects and shapes of the tubes, seat stays, etc and even where the fork ends seem really similar. tyre clearance indeed not (up to 30 on my reacto)
@@gabrieljohannson6777So far so good, but only 500k so far. Components are mostly non-merida specific...
That light does not seem very well integrated for such an expensive bike.
Ridiculous price!!. No wonder these companies are in trouble!. China made frame for gods sake which means £500 tops manufacturing cost rest of the components must be gold plated!.
idk hoss it works for me
Would it be a fair statement to suggest that the industry is pushing wider on the road so the only need one mould for a road and gravel rim. Soon we will hear one bike that will do it all😂😂😂
This storage compartment is great I miss having one on my bike so I don't have to carry everything on my back
= penthouse pet of the month ...which one gets to be babe of the year ?
terrible paint job
The whole series is terrible. Others are even worse!
one of the worst aspects of BMC IMO. You don't even get a paint choice on a $12K+ bike. I suppose you can always get it stripped and painted in the after-market, but that's gonna add a coupla Gs.
I see this as over integration. Not a fan of it, but give BMC props for always being a trend setter.
Yes, European/Swiss design ethos can certainly make things sleek and beautiful, but what happens when the light breaks and you can't get a new one (the bike is certainly going to outlast the light)? Then, a more practical designed bike wins out.
@@lawrencefalk8714 I love BMC, but would rather just use a saddle bag for easy access
I thought it's a BIANCHI because fo the color 😎💯
This bike is built for retired senior citizens who don’t care about cost, weight, and value comfort and stability over performance and light weight.
How many retired seniors drop $13K for a bike?
The light and storage are dorky. The color sucks. And the whole form looks cheap. Should have took your Colnago, would have love to seen that riding over their
Bike Fail
SO much hate over a bike. Forgot how prentenous roadies are.
I wish my Trek Domane had a better down tube access door.
Looks terrible
