What speakers would be comparable to use as a replacement if I'm not using factory speakers with the housing, or are there speakers I can use with this housing then have to either solderer the connector back or cut the connector off and run a new connection.

You can use any 6.5" speaker, I just installed 4 sets of Kicker KSS6504s in my '01 Highlander, they come with mounting brackets that can fit, and you can easily find wiring harnesses that will plug right into the factory harness in the door on Amazon. Scoche makes some. Crutchfield will send you the speakers with both aftermarket mounting brackets that you can use and the wiring harnesses.
