- This film represents the first use of a motion picture in child analysis. The film was used to study the play activities of children with psychiatric problems. The first case is a white female, eight years old, with petit mal seizures. She demonstrates tantrums and rebelliousness. She shows oral sadism and cannibalism toward the analyst. When the analyst acts out a seizure, the child holds on to her. The child shoots an imaginary policeman. The second case is a white male, age 19, with epilepsy, who plays both female and male roles.

They keep calling the child sadistic in her reactions to the therapist having an attack, but to me she is possibly acting out how her parents react to her attacks by punishing her. A therapist today would be on the floor, playing with the child with toys and allowing the child to act out scenes as a way of expressing what she doesn't have the words for, because at 8 children don't have the vocabulary to verbally discuss what is on their mind.
This is screwed up in so many ways. And they think the KIDS are disturbed???

This is pure Melanie Klein child analysis, right out of the book.

Ugh, Freudian nonsense! The "cannibalistic behavior" is partly just a kid playing around or self-injurious behavior. At least that is how we see it today. Having therapists in bed with the child would be very inappropriate today, infact it would get their license revoked and they would probably face criminal charges! But you must remember that psychology was still in it's infancy during this time. The therapy used today on children comes from the history of what works and definitely what doesn't!
I'm so messed up from watching this.
I get that this is interactive role-playing ... child's fears and all that ... the dude had his arms around her throat! And what in the bleeding name of jesus are they doing rocking around on a freaking bed??? Either subject! Especially with the 19-year-old male... cameraman or not! It's not that I find it socially inappropriate...he already had declared (in the written parts) that he wanted to be sleeping with his mother (obvious attachment). This, to me, is the playing out of a future serial killer to be...not therapy.
Um yes.. Extremely disturbing to watch. Even more extremely disgusting to know that it was really happening. I don't care *what* the reason was for this sick role play, it should be illegal.
I'm still nauseous that I just watched this play out, real or not.. makes no difference to me.
I say that the "film maker" is suffering from a bit psychopathy mixed with a good dose of sadism.
