  • This film depicts patients who have been successfully treated for severe depression and manic states with convulsive shock therapy, showing their behavior prior to and following treatment. Patients range in age from 42 to 58 and are in varying states of depression, some suicidal and some with self-mutilating tendencies. The after-scenes show the patients’ improved moods and well-being. The film also shows the effects of metrazol and electroshock convulsions in curarized patients. One such patient is seen immediately after her admission to the hospital screaming, pleading, and praying to die. The film ends with her as a recovered patient leaving the hospital and waving goodbye.

My seizures are a good enough jolt, don't need any extra

Yeah nothing at all natural about introducing high electrical jolts in to the brain. Recipe for disaster. Psychiatry still allows this quackery.

As sometime who has had 21 shock treatments, let me tell you, they don't work for everyone, and the side effects from the anesthesia are a bummer.

Feel for you I also had it done for extreme anxiety but it didn’t help at all and I lost my memory didn’t even know who my family was

I'm so angry and sad that anyone anywhere has received this so called therapy. It;s still being used. There should be a class action suite.

@@JamieHumeCreative Why? It's proven very effective in many cases. It's performed a lot differently now.

I do wonder how many of these people that were labeled as successful ever had to go back to those places because they relapsed or something like that.

The one dude asked for a gun.
Well, he needs to make sure he gets the correct gun. Lot's to consider. Caliber, bullet weight, hollow point or ball...
This is why getting Professional help is so important.

@@jeanpettit8346 He was making mention of the woman that had 14 shocks. She looked blank didn't she? Probably wiped her memory out. And everything else.

Am I the only one who thinks these people were threated or paid off to act like it improved their quality of life infront of the camera

Yes I believe it's false that they had recovery. The monsters who electrocute the brain need to keep the $6 billion honey pot going in America. Socially undesirables were shocked in pre war Germany causing them to die sooner. Also why do they do this silent film ?

The psychiatrist can pad his bank account if he can get 20 shocks a week equals an extra $300 K. That's your reason.

They learned to mask their symptoms so the shocks stopped.

@@blackswan1983 exactly.....the treatment in the asylum was atrocious on top of that was the horrid shocks. They play acted to make it stop with hope of release. I'd say a good few either left their families who committed them or died from suicide. That they did it to make it stop I saw in some documentaries on here re shock treatment.

@@satochinakamoto6129 Did you even notice the year this was made? Both shock therapy and medical costs have changed a great deal since the 1940's.
