Imagine if every teacher was as good as Guy!? Enthusiastic, fun, engaging. Love this channel!
I want him as my teacher
his videos are good but i find him fucking annoying, i end closing the video before it ends
Yeah it's a long journey to get anywhere with him
Unfortunately math Is not the same as music... If I was a math teacher I'd be a dick too.
Unlike math, most people like music and if you don't, you're dead inside and I don't trust you, the same way I don't trust people that don't like pizza.
That is why YT has become the best school and university!
Guy is always a ray of sunshine in his sun filled shed! Who we REALLY need in these gloomy times!
Hey Guy - a new career beckons: Children’s TV!1;-)
Better yet - call the show the Boris Pick me-up show or something...
@@johnwade7430 You might be surprised by how much he knows about TV and radio presenting, from both his own experience and that of his very famous parents.
Guy, you're an absolute tonic. Thank you so much!
My favourite Guy on UA-cam. Always great when you post a new video, mate.
Sometimes, after a particularly fatiguing day, the unbridled enthusiasm of Guy Michelmore is the perfect medicine...
Finally! For years I've been watching various music makers on UA-cam and nobody has ever done a talk about MIDI controllers. Thanks Guy, you're the best!
We have at least 2 things in common: 1) I prefer tactile controllers over virtual/touch and 2) My first rule of technology is that it has to look good in the dark! Cheers :-)
Absolutely love the energy of this 'Guy' But Seriously, I have been watching this channel for a long time now :D
Such a character... and I have learned so much. Thanks Guy
A good blend with useful knowledge, lovely humor, a real British man and authenticity, thank you very much Guy
Perfect timing, I started browsing yesterday for a better way to tweak EQ, automation, etc. than my mouse. Thanks for this Guy!
If you use logic you can get logic controller for iPhone/iPad and use faders and cool stuff there. Idk if it’s customisable as in assigning different CC things toit but it works for mixing and all
Lucky you! I have waited for this vid for moooonths! 👌🤣
Love your vids and tutorials Guy. Informative and entertaining, and always delivered with such infectious energy. Thank you so much. 🙏🏾🌞
A-mazing Guy, never ever thought the keyboard would ever work again, so cool.
Another video that's all about your video - audio setup for making your videos -- your work is excellent and it all looks very simple and clear, which obviously means that you have organized some complicated tech in such a way so that it all comes across to us as a "simple" process... thanks!
Very useful video for me! I don't know much at all about MIDI and controllers, so having those things explained is great. 😀
Love the enthusiasm! 😊 👍
When you were waving your arms about manically doing an excellent impression of a DJ who's had one too many Trebor Mints, it reminded me of a Scottish/Borders expression: Giving it Laldy! Thanks again for your time and enthusiasm.
You've mentioned some of your controllers before, but I've been looking forward to a deeper dive!
Not sure if that keyboard wanted a deeper dive though XD
oh, finally I found very enthusiastic and expressive midi controllers review. So unique presentation.
love your enthusiasm, definitely on the same wavelength!! The interface revolution is happening
Thanks for all the information and insight! My stay sane summer project has been recording an album of original singer / songwriter tunes (not film score ... sorry ...) and the learning I've done on your channel has come in handy an incalculable number of times. Much appreciated!!!
You're welcome!
Always a pleasure to watch your vids Guy! Instant like ;)
Love that energy man cool videos keep doing that!!
I never understood MIDI learn before. There are gems in all of your videos.
Stumbled on this video and checked out some others. These are really well done and agree with the comments below. You make learning fun! Thank you for posting.
Great tutorial and well done
Excellent video!
Keep up the great work.
I have a bit of an obsession with midi controllers.
Hardware or software.
Midi learn in CUBASE has gave me much joy.
Brilliant thank you Guy great fun as usual. Thanks for the nod on the S88. It’s fantastic.
I agree. Expected a deeper dive and more towards just midi controllers.
Thank you, Guy, this is inspiring!
This was very helpful, thank you :)
love your wit and quirkiness :)
Another controller that works on an old iPad here is Metagrid, which has pre configured buttons for Logic, Cubase, FCPX, Dorico etc. Totally user configurable as well, it's been a useful addition here in my studio.
Guy - as a composer/arranger for 4 decades, I hope to always have the curiosity for learning new things - as you seem to. Thanks for putting a little "extra" into your videos. Just don't drink a Red Bull before filming! Cheers and keep it up!
brilliant! i love my 10 year old Akai MPK88 so much i just bought another one! :D great feeling hammer action keybed, full sized faders, button, knobs, transport controls, 16 velocity sens pads with note repeat, arpeggiator... weighing in at 34kg it's a real beast!
I love your energy and dynamics!! I would love to have an studio like yours as well..
I like Guy’s sense of humor, nice channel
love this guy
I am so glad the Keystation 88 still works, if I still had hair, I would have ripped them off my head when I saw what you did ! :D
Hi guy, love your videos and find your enthusiasm is infectious. Although after you bought the S88 I took the plunge and got the S61 and love it. Are you using komplete kontrol or just loading vst stand-alone , would be interested to see any midi maps you have created
I mostly have no idea what he's talking about when he demonstrates techy-MIDI-controller stuff
(you don't have to be a millionaire to afford & use such toys, but it helps... I still create & use soundfonts for that reason [if and when my PC with its Audigy soundcard works])
but he is irresistable even so.
You can tell he once worked in local (English, Anglian) TV media. I'm British, & his parents (popular national radio & TV presenters) were familiar to me from my childhood.
He may be a maniac, but he is a born teacher.
Exactly the video I needed. I've been in the market for an honest opinion about controllers, various controllers, how they're used, and if they're right for me. Thank you very much. I'd love a video on how to set up a controller with VST plugins like channel strips.
Man you earned my sub so incredibly quickly!!!
I recall reading years ago about cleaning a qwerty computer keyboard by putting it in the dishwasher. The article did state that it wasn't recommended but was a fast way to get your keyboard pristine. So I tried it and the keyboard came out perfect, and after leaving it to dry out it worked perfectly. I wouldn't do it to any of my expensive keyboards, but I would do it again if I ever had a cheap keyboard that needed a deep clean.
Love this teacher!
So glad I found this 😊
Great energy - For that, I subscribed!!!
Thank you for that awesome video.. You taught me orchestration with the other videos and now you're telling me what exactly to get. I got a Nanokontrol2. And after that Keystation 88 "durability test😂" I bought a Keystation too and they're awesome. Truely Thank you!!
and for keyswitches later on I would probably go for a Novation Launchpad Mini because it's programmable for cc switches as well as notes and the difference between an Akai APC Mini is very marginal
All hail Keystation 88. You made me actually laugh out loud. Thanks Guy
dude you are my hero HOW GOOD VIBES
great video thanks for sharing
Great video Guy! Worth the wait to see your Stream Deck implementation, might not chuck my MIDI keyboard in the bath just yet but it is made by M-Audio so never say never!
Hi Guy, glad your doing well.
One of my all time faves is my trusty old peavey pc1600
Hey Guy thank you for sharing your video review for Cubase Elements. Because of that video I at least can say I'm Semi-Familliar with the program.
Using software like MidiPipe, I have remapped the CCs of the AKAI APC mini faders to CC1 CC11 and CC7. Works great
Never heard such a "clean" sound from an M-Audio Keyboard before :D
Thanks to Guy I just had to have the StreamDeck XL. It's sitting on my desk now and I'm loving it so far. I'm sure I've only scratched the surface (get it?). I would love to see a deeper dive into what Guy uses it for. I've got DAW control down, but what else will this madman think of?
@Guy Michelmore, Can you have 2 (Dual) "Platform M" faders for left and right hands to adjust expression midi when keys are already recorded... or will they conflict?
Loved the video!! I actually bought the Icon Platform M+, but I can’t seem to get it to work the way you have it (even after going through all the steps I found online). Anyone know how to get it to work here?
Fuckin love this guy, i see my crazyness in him near all the electronics synths and midiboards
You also have a MAIN STUDIO. That's two more studios than I have. Well, maybe someday. Love your videos.
I have a Beringer umx 61 and Edirol ur80. Marvellous.
Whilst nothing will ever completely replace a hardware unit, if you don't have the cash to splash then take a look at TouchOSC. A fantastic little app for the iPhone / iPad (better on iPad as more space but one purchase gets it for both devices). Allows you to setup your own controller app so you can change whatever you like whenever you like it. I'm currently in the process however of making my own hardware controller using an Arduino. Very easy to do with the Surface Controller Midi library available and very cheap to do. Also get the satisfaction of having made it myself. Also love knowing how things work so if they go wrong I can fix them.
That was great! Thank you!
Youre welcome
Would love Icon....however, the moths in my wallet have other ideas..... (sigh)
@@thewrenchreviews9986 not the cheapest but very well built
Hi, keep up the excellent work.Just one question :how about using an ipad as a controller?
Great this video.
Are you planning on getting any mpe controller soon like from Roli or Touché? 🙂
Guy, refreshing as always just started deep dive into controllers will be checking out the Icon / Platform & thanks for your advanced product testing with M Audio Key Station 88 next time the salt water challenge ;-)
Ha! Been on the mixing desk with hundreds of knobs for forty years, nice to hear from a musician what people think of me ! 🤪
can the streamdeck reference midi notes? I.e. many libraries allow you to change articulations with the lowest notes on the keyboard. However, having only 49 keys for my main keyboard, I can't really reach those without transposing all the time...
I like the Novation launch control and launch control xl
I'm using an old iPad with a custom TouchOSC layout I've configured with CC-faders, buttons for shortcuts, jog wheel etc. It takes some time to setup but it works really nice! I had the icon platform but the software for programming the faders were a nightmare to setup for me.
Hi, I would like to know if you recomendation the Icon M+ for controll Spitfire strings library?
Love it! What is the software you use to process your youtube videos? - The ATEM goes where? Thank you so much for making this. Again I just love it - and you are brilliant! I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on vocal processors or choral sounds! Your videos = morale boost.
Now you've got to take the upright into the pool and see if it still works afterwards. :)
I would love to see a Stream Deck design that has knobs instead of buttons!!! Just think how cool that would be! It would be amazing. I am shocked this doesn't exist out there somewhere. You'd have a 32 OLED type Rotary knob set up that was fully programmable to each induvial VST! It's tempting to build such a beast myself via the Stream Deck. Would need really small rotary dials though as to not block the whole display area. Native Should come out with this! The tech is dirt cheap, and the demand would be immediate! Who wouldn't want a fully programmable OLED type rotary knob board!? Right now, the only thing close is the NI Maschines, S series MK2, with the 2 LCD screens and labels for each knob. Overlay templates are PITA, but something that instantly adjusts as you switch VSTs? I'd buy that at just about any price.
@Shawn Strong The price of the CT is too close to a Mpc one or such. The standard is 279.00 I think. Not that bad, but only 6 knobs. 8 would be just prefect. It's a neat device at the price point.
Great video, thanks ! What is your camera ?
How would the Akai MPK mini work as a portable keyboard controller with knobs?
After what seems like an eternal search for a simple CC fader controller, I've finally found one. 8 assignable faders. That's it. That's all I want. 4 would do but I'm sure I'll find uses for the others. It will fit nicely on the big blank space on my Komplete Kontrol S88 (where NI should have put faders, right?). $99 + $15 worldwide shipping. It's the MC-8 from Nakedboards out of Moscow. Shipping is 2 to 3 weeks. Reviewers on UA-cam are happy with their products.
Great info - however without examples of each item you mentioned I’m only guessing about the instant results available with the programmable interfaces...
omg i love you.
"BUTTONS!"
This guys gets it.
do you have an tutorial on how to setup the apk mini because I notice you have stuff wrote on yours? This would really be a help to me, thanks in advance!
Hello can you please give me advise, I bought a nektar impact to play sounds from my d550 rack, can I actually do this?
Hey Guy, could you put the links for the products mentioned the the description?
That black magic switcher is nice!! I need to find a Display Port switcher!!
Ahh finally, "Hello everybody"! I missed that.
I have a Nektar Impact LX49+. I use Studio One. Every time I try to set up MIDI Learn, the buttons and knobs and faders are not recognized the next time I load up Studio One. Is there a specific reason for this? Furthermore, when I assign a knob/button/fader to a certain control, it only changes the parameter on one instrument. Is there a way to make it so that one knob/button/fader controls (for example) volume on any instrument that I record enable? Thanks
Thank you for the video!
if it's ok...
I'm thinking of buying platform m+, does it work well with Cubase?
Do the motorized faders move with sending CC in plugins?
What do you think about X-touch compact?
Thank you
Avi
Your keyboard exploits remind me of the scene in Tim Hill's 2007 Alvin & The Chipmunks film, where Dave throws his keyboard and recording gear out in the rain, then later on brings it back inside and records a hit jam w/ Alvin & Co. :)
Thanks, Guy! I'm fiddling with the TouchOSC iOS app. It's only $5 on the Apple site and it does work quite well. The draw back is that merely touching the screen sets the slider to the point of contact so you have to be very careful about not losing contact as you make those hairpins sing. I would much prefer hardware with physical resistance but I'm not putting out $400 for one just yet! Why, oh why doesn't the Komplete S88 not have any sliders??? Or at least offer an outboard one?
What's your experience with icon platform m+? Do you also use it for mixing (volume automation)?
Lol 2 days ago I was thinking about making a comment asking you to do a video on this topic. GREAT MINDS.
Nice!
Sign the Keystation in gold sharpie and put it up on eBay for sale.. Bet you get a nice bit o' bank. :-)
Hey guy I got an Icon platform M as well. Love the feel althhough its a little annoying to set up and the buttons are just all assigned to midi notes. Which trigger my samples. Literally tried everything. Do you just use it for CC's like expression, modulation, and so on? Cause I feel like thats the only and great point of it.
I have an old yamaha psr-185 but some of the keys don't work anymore. Do you think it just needs a bath?
This year I want to improve my own set with a komplete 88 maybe later will come something more
His the coolest guy iv seen today
Any chance of you doing a quick video on assigning keyswitches to the buttons on the S88? I can’t find anything specific on UA-cam and the manual makes me break out in a cold sweat!
Learning can be fun,, you are living proof of it 😇
Love your channel, how are you finding the S88 Mk2? I have had to send mine back after 1.5years. Keys started producing a loud plastic click, not sure if its to do with lubrication. But Native Instruments were very good, they sent me out a new empty box, for sending it back to them, as I had got rid of my box. Just waiting for it to return.. remember it has 2 years warranty. A lot of people think its up after 1 year.. its 2 years.. Keep on doing what you do!!
