To this day I have NO idea why Brock has TEN full restores. Were they really so insistent on the player learning type matchups that they didn’t want you to win by any other methods? I feel like encouraging creative strategies early on would be good 😂
Game Freak were extremely prone to schedule slip in their early days and had to be forced to get Pokémon Red and Green into a state that could be shipped to customers, so I am like 90% sure trainer-used items never actually got _finished_ since the item assignments make very little sense in general (Guard Spec. Giovanni) and the code for Blaine doesn't actually check his Pokémon's current health before having a chance to use a Super Potion. It's entirely possible Brock's choice of item dates from when he was the second gym leader rather than the first.
Merry Christmas you crazy bastard!! I hope you take a well deserved vacation in January. Thanks for all the content, sorry it helps me get to sleep some nights.
Well, Weedle was also Lv100 vs Sabrina’s Lv50, and the damage calc, iirc takes the attacker’s level into account, although that might not be until later, Gen I is odd.
Yeah, these solo runs feel like the big disenchantment of Sabrinas usual reputation as the strongest Gym Leader she has online. Many streamers mention Sabrina having no "type weakness" and that she does massive damage with Psychic but as can be seen, her mons are so frail that they croak with any attack anyway and her stupid AI almost never picks Psychic as an Attack move, rather often doing 1 damage with Psywave, the baddest, most awful TM a Gym Leader hands out.
@@Alector12 Good point. Sabrina can be scary IF she can land Flash/Kinesis, uses Psychic, and you can't outspeed her. But more often than not, she chooses the worst options.
Most terrible pokemon are physical attackers and Sabrina just folds to that. Whereas all RBY starters are special attackers that just don't do much to her with their STABs. So people's memories of their kid strategy of bulldozing everything with their starter make Sabrina seem much stronger.
Looking up the early bugs, an interesting run one day will be Caterpie in Gen V onward where for whatever reason, the developers started giving it Electroweb as a tutor move.
I remember that as a child, after discovering the power of X-items, we joked amongst our friend group that with that help we could even beat the game with - you guessed it! - only a Weedle, which we actually considered to be the worst Pokémon in the game. It wasn’t yellow, but red/blue. We got to the league fairly easy (with a ton of grinding, nonetheless), but could never actually beat it and eventually lost interest. We just didn’t understand those games enough, I guess. Now, Scott, with all his knowledge of the game finally achieves that and shares it with us! Amazing work!
LOL at 49:02 after beating down Koga's brick wall with Weedle's forehead, "Clearing out most of them (new trainers) brings Venonat up to level 86, almost 87." The confusion animation is now replaced with little circling Venonats around Scott's head.
Jrose concluded that beating the game with Weedle was impossible with your normal ruleset due to struggle-bussing the entire thing and ending up at Lorelei. Her Dewgong knows Rest and will spam it forever seeing the Psychic supereffective hit against Weedle's Poison type. You can't poison it for longer than half a turn, you can't PP stall it from the AI having unlimited PP, you basically can't do anything permanent to it. You will run out of moves and Struggle to death even with 100% max rolled crits on Struggle. Even if you got past Giovanni, the run ends at Lorelei. Weedle is definitely in the impossible tier, even for AI.
I thought Yellow gave Lorelei special AI to stop her from thinking Rest was super effective against Poison types? It's only in Red and Blue where she would use Rest forever.
This was super interesting to see the Yellow/Blue comparison of Weedle with your video and Jrose video and was exiting too see. Sucks that the 8th gym was just too hard to overcome, sense Weedle was able to make it all the way to Agitha without X-items in Blue!
Another fantastic video. I'll confess, I only watch the videos for Pokemon Yellow, as that's the only game I'm familiar with. I'll be selfish and ask for more Gen 1 content 😉. Keep up the amazing work.
On the topic of an additional tier to the tier list, you can perhaps add a "Lance" or "Cheater " tier which is for pokemon that can beat the game but if you bend the rules slightly. Like allowing Weedle to use X Items when you hit level 100,
It would be funny, that's a great name for it. Lance deserves it with all his hacks. Barrier Dragonite in RB, Rock Slide Aerodactyl in GSC (also 3 underleveled Dragonite). I still think we need the improbable tier more though. There are mons that can *technically* beat the game but only with stupid TAS luck that don't really deserve to be down with the impossible tier "I start with only Explosion" mons.
@@mathturtle37 Maybe we can put them in Lance Tier as well? Is needing ultra TAS luck really that different than a mon that needs you to have 99 Full Restores to win?

It's funny you mention that video idea at 1:01:51... Years ago, I did run Weedle in Blue on my 3DS. Obviously I don't have video footage of any of it, but I did take a photo of my lil guy in the Hall of Fame at lv 88. This was long before I was super exposed to the solo challenge community so I was using items in battle pretty much the whole time. Once I got past Brock, it felt strangely freeing just relying on Struggle and X items, and not having to prioritise my learnset at all.
I've always wanted to see a caterpie and weedle (team worm) run. neither can win alone without items, but is it possible to complete the game with the standard ruleset if they tag team? This would open the door to a few stratagies and make the run somewhat interesting too
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone! I'm watching this on Christmas morning. . Seeing you train in Diglett's cave reminds me of watching my friend play Pokémon Red or Blue back in the day and watching him grind his entire team up to the high 70's in there I asked him why and he just said he doesn't mind the monotony (He was using an emulator so he had speed up). Generally when I played id go and occasionally get wiped by an unplanned Dugtrio if i failed to catch it or run. Also really glad you ranked Kakuna here as well. I knew it was impossible as soon as i saw its move pool. So my guess for the last week of Daily December is the start of a HGSS series perhaps starting with either Butterfree or Venomoth? Guess well have to wait and see
I had a very weird Christmas Eve, considering I was hospitalized for two days for extreme fever and flu symptoms. I nearly died and my body nearly fried my brain. I’m back home now, but that really made me realize how fragile this all is. Christmas plans were canceled, but at least I’m still here to make new ones for next year.
I propose calling the “needs X items” the Lance Tier. In gen 1, Lance’s Dragonite knows Barrier. And THEN in gen 2 Lance’s Aerodactyl knows Rock Slide. He literally cheats. It’s not possible for it to have that move. I.E. this is the “Cheater” tier. Only possible if you cheat the rules!
Like Red/Blue its still nearly IMPOSSIBLE in Crystal ALL of Sabrina's pokemon can 1 shot it EVEN at lv 100 and NONE of Koga's can be poisoned FROM Poison sting at all.
To save Scott's sanity, if he has to grind on wilds (like here in diglet's cave), he should be able to go to 12x game speed and just add 3x the time onto the clock.
Congrats weedle for being the best Pokemon in the imposible tier, beating Magikarp, Caterpie and Metapod by reaching Giovanni instead of not being able to defeat Agatha Jr
Wait what? You didn't do a second playthrough with Weedle? How could you deprive us of such riveting content?! D= (Late to wish this but Merry Christmas!
Is possible to mod in for Kakuna to learn Harden up on evolving? i mean come on, looking over at Metapod's move pool in Yellow and the fact Kakuna does learn Harden in gen two, it is supposed to. I refuse to believe anything else😑. Now do i think Kakuna can beat the game? no, but it might get further than Weedle.
And the Christmaspresent for next year: Pokemon Yellow cannon Ranking is finished and its time for the backports. Btw. It would really nice, once every Pokemon is ranked, to get a mean time it took to beat the game.
I've always wondered if the Full Heal situation with Brock was put there as an explicit design choice to prevent people from beating him with, like, a Kakuna. Like maybe they were like "we don't want people to use poison here, we need the player to learn about either type effectiveness or physical/special, so we don't want them winning with poison"
I was wondering, if weedle could learn one more attack (but only one) what would be the best? I was thinking maybe surf/ ice beam or Mega Drain for Rhydon/Onix
Everything mentioned at the end of the video about Kakuna is accurate. It does, however, bring up an idea for a potentially interesting "what-if" run. In Gen 2, the devs did apply the same fix for Kakuna's moveset that they did for Metapod in Yellow, namely adding a second instance of Harden at Level 7 so that Kakuna would learn it on evolution. A Kakuna that learned Harden this way could then be traded back to a Gen 1 game. So... what if the devs had applied the fix in Yellow, OR what if someone traded a Weedle over to Gen 2, evolved it there so it learned Harden, then traded it back to the Yellow file it had originated from? (I specify the two-way trade because then obedience isn't an issue. Kakuna's bad enough without adding that into the mix.) Could the resulting Kakuna beat Yellow under Scott's usual rule set? (I'm imagining that the playthrough would start as a Weedle, and evolve into Kakuna at Level 7, with the one change being that Kakuna's move set would be modified to include an instance of Harden at Level 7.) My initial thought is that the run would be at least *possible* because of the Badge Boost Glitch (coupled with the legitimate utility of Harden), though it would be *well* into the Bruno tier. The Brock split alone would be at least as bad as Weedle's, possibly even worse due to Kakuna's Base Attack being even lower than Weedle's. (After all, you can't badge boost Attack until *after* you beat Brock.) I wouldn't be surprised if this run had to hit Level 100 to be able to beat the game.
Already watch the first upload. Not gonna watch it again. Hope that doesn't hurt the retention too much, so I'll just leave a comment for the engagement. Tangentially, I once tried to do a Catterpie solo run in ge-5 since between Bugbite and Electroweb it finally had something resembling actual move versatility. It was still pretty tough I had to make lots of compromises, and ultimately couldn't finish because I made the mistake of doing it in White version and where N's Reshiram was just too much for me. Still, I'd love to maybe see how Catterpie (and I guess Weedle too, I guess, but Catterpie is my favorite, maybe a race) could perform in Gen-1 with those moves backported.
And this is why I call Koffing* a good Pokemon *And similar pokemon that are not the fastest requiring some grinding but are easy to use without needing luck
If only Bug Bite existed from the start, huh? That move would've been amazing here, probably would've saved Weedle a bunch of time - both from having a more powerful move with better type coverage, and also having more PP to use as well.

I can already tell this run is going to be painful.
Before I watch the video, I'm already doubting that Weedle can finish the game. Might be another possible but very unlikely situation.
Like Red/Blue its still nearly IMPOSSIBLE in Crystal ALL of Sabrina's pokemon can 1 shot it EVEN at lv 100 and NONE of Koga's can be poisoned FROM Poison sting at all.
Weedle's first Brock split is longer than the whole video covering the challenge run.
Mad respect for doing the run with Weedle. Maybe in the future do a run with bug bite back ported for Weedle and Caterpie maybe? 😅
Well, I'm not watching this whole video again but ill comment and like for the algorithm.
Not giving Weedle a move pool is too cruel
oh boy, the great diglett fainting now also occured on this channel too. Poor little Jimmy ;(
Hooray! No more 480!
Also i did this in red and lorelai is a hard wall because of rest spam :(
To save Scott's sanity, if he has to grind on wilds (like here in diglet's cave), he should be able to go to 12x game speed and just add 3x the time onto the clock.
Death by a thousand stings, ouch
???
Reupload?
Congrats weedle for being the best Pokemon in the imposible tier, beating Magikarp, Caterpie and Metapod by reaching Giovanni instead of not being able to defeat Agatha Jr
Wait what? You didn't do a second playthrough with Weedle? How could you deprive us of such riveting content?! D=
(Late to wish this but Merry Christmas!
Never noticed this before, Kakuna looks like it has a tie in that picture at the end of the video. Little bug gentleman
I actually don't think Lorelai would be possible without X Items, no way you beat Lorelai's Dewgong with it Resting every turn.
surely this will go well
And the Christmaspresent for next year: Pokemon Yellow cannon Ranking is finished and its time for the backports.
Btw. It would really nice, once every Pokemon is ranked, to get a mean time it took to beat the game.
Bro is the ultimate first route bug trainer
You’re the man, Scott
I've always wondered if the Full Heal situation with Brock was put there as an explicit design choice to prevent people from beating him with, like, a Kakuna. Like maybe they were like "we don't want people to use poison here, we need the player to learn about either type effectiveness or physical/special, so we don't want them winning with poison"
This is going to be a banger
I was wondering, if weedle could learn one more attack (but only one) what would be the best?
I was thinking maybe surf/ ice beam or Mega Drain for Rhydon/Onix
Completely new video!
49:00: For a second, Weedle morphed into Venonat.
im curious how weedle would do with bug bite (the only move it gets besides string shot and poison sting)
Been waiting this forever!!
Bongzilla has arived
This is because of the video quality stuck in 480p?
Most likely. I double checked the quality and the max is still 480p
Since I always watch on mobile I didn't even notice
I’m on mobile and I could notice lol. It was much blurrier than normal
Higher resolutions are available now, I think it might take some time for youtube to enable it sometimes
Re-upload already?
Weedle vs Agatha, what could possibly go wrong :D
It’s Christmas and my headcanon is that Bruno stopped the bug.
Instead of Giovanni, Agatha is the unbreakable wall in Red Blue.
And this is why I call Koffing* a good Pokemon
*And similar pokemon that are not the fastest requiring some grinding but are easy to use without needing luck
It would be interesting to see a Weedle with mewtwo’s learnset and TMs vs a mewtwo with only weedle’s poison sting and string shot.
If only Bug Bite existed from the start, huh? That move would've been amazing here, probably would've saved Weedle a bunch of time - both from having a more powerful move with better type coverage, and also having more PP to use as well.
Us eviolite on weedle then he won't try and evolve
You could heck change the item potion to an eivotie in your PC at the start
