@@Bassman-dk9yc Fuck Yes. Jason is best Metallica bass player for me forever. I don't like bass sounds, looks like low mid tones. Low mid aren't bass for me.
Well, I’m playing with my fingers most of the time so I’m simply not able to play downstrokes throughout the whole song. But IMHO it’s impossible to recreate the sound of other bass players 100%. I think I came close enough without losing my individual style.
@@Bassman-dk9yc I imagine Cliff would have laughed at someone using a pick for one of his songs and you did great. I never though much of Newstead as a player anyway. p.s. LOVE your RIC!🤘🏻
Absolutely, but remember he didn't develop that until around '88-'89 having been in the band 2-3yrs and frankly being around Hetfield/Hammet who have such an aggressive down picking style. Watch Newsted circa October '86 and he is all about alternate picking...then fast forward with the exposure I spoke of and holy fucking shit, the beast was released! \m/ His right hand attack will never be reproduced!
Everyone is giving you a nod for the playing (as they should. It is damn good!) But I want to comment on that superb video editing. Everything locks up super tight. You are multi talented sir. Love the effort you put in to all you do.
@@Bassman-dk9ycThis popped back up in my algorithm, and needless to say, I'm glad it did. I wanted to ask, is this being recorded through a Foucusrite (or similar) with plugins? You can definitely hear the tone difference between the two. Cliff had his Boogies, and you can hear that punch via the P/J pickups and an SVT tonal quality that Jason loved so much.
That Spector (and especially the NS2) has a fascinating tone. So much growl and low end, so consistent across all strings and so crunchy. The bass sounds simply amazing with fingerstyle, pick and slap.
I think you did an awesome job of getting close enough to both of their sounds to make this an interesting comparison! I'm all about Jason in this, used to be a finger style purist but can't deny how much I love the tone of a pick and have since made it my main style of playing. Great video, thanks!
I get what you were going for, you've got the basses bro but when it comes to Newsted, his right hand and attack were on another planet....that extremely aggressive pick attack was something else entirely and through the Justice->Reload tours that "snap" they had live was badass. I will give you this young brother, you nailed our Godfather Cliff! \m/ The crazy thing about my journey was that Cliff got me going yet somehow I ended up being a pick player to later transitioning back to finger playing but maintaining a heavy attack on the strings...what can I say, I'm a sick fuck like that. I cannot help but attack the strings hard. Damn Newsted for that! haha! Subscribed! \m/
Cliff Burton's bass sounds like low mids and there's not enough groove to grab me. Nothing impressive in my eyes. The way Newsted performs Creeping Death is just iconic. Raw bass with clearly emphasized tones and harmonics that just take the track to a new level.
It comes down to whether you like a more integrated "muddier" sound or a tighter attack on every note. Using a pick bass produces that super, super tight "And Justice For All" feel.
Totally nailed to tones and both cliff and Jason are awesome bassist’s but with cliff head banging out of synch with the music and rocking out in his own little world 👍……
I have a 1976 U.S. Made Fender P-Bass and I would Trade it for a Rickenbacker in a Second! My God those Basses are Gorgeous... Nice playing also😁 P.s.: #CliffEm'All
I don’t remember everything, but I think I left everything relatively flat but boosted the presence and drive controls a little bit. Compressor was mainly on the low frequencies.
I believe Cliff's style and tone were too exclusive for Metallica. Otherwise Jason's playing fits just perfectly to their music. Hate me if you wish, but it's my view.
The way you are playing is just the same to Robert Trujillo by seeing your finger style but not of Jason's style, buddy. But, you are good, though. Of course you have cliff style
Listening to the two tones back to back now, I’m not surprised that Jason got turned down on the Justice record. His bass tone has so much high end in it, that it’s making the rest of the instruments hard to hear. Cliff’s tone has some high end roll off that works better with the band. Nothing against Jason, of course. He’s still a great player. They just had to do some trial and error with him.
And it was mostly error. They could have just lower the mids or fixed Jason's tone instead of getting rid of the bass. ...And Justice For All is a better album having Jason's bass added back to is. The Black Album, Load/ReLoad are proof of this.
Gotta say I love the Spector and pick. Jason is my favorite Metallica bass player. Great cover 👍
Thanks a lot!🤘🏻
@@Bassman-dk9yc Fuck Yes. Jason is best Metallica bass player for me forever. I don't like bass sounds, looks like low mid tones. Low mid aren't bass for me.
Jason is the Best, he ido My favorite too
I love the attack of using a pick on a bass. It makes everything pop, almost like you're playing on a piano with heavy strikes.
Explain why Jason is better then cliff?
How?!?!
Cliff: Massive Girth and Presence
Jason: Razor Sharp Attack
Wdym girth😭?
Jason is known for his straight down picking. There was no up-down-up-down picking in the song by him. that changes a lot in the dynamics and its tone

LOL yes there was He did a lot of 16th and 32nd notes via alternate picking. Dyers Eve, anything on Justice basically
He downpicked a lot of riffs, like James, he didn’t ONLY downpick tho, otherwise disposable heroes would be literally impossible

Great comparison video !! Love both Basses
Thank you!
Jason is all down picking but nailzd the cliff sound. Luved it.
Sweet! Great cover, and a nice job with the bass swap transitions!
thanks a lot, this also gave me a lot of insight on the DinosaurJr Bass Sound by Lou Barlow and why using the Rickenbacker :)
Something about the tone of the pick is rad but I can live with either.🤘 keep doing it the way you like brother.
Both amazing sounding!
Keep up the good content my man
I will, thank you very much!
What a great concept for a video! Enjoyed that 👍
Thank you very much!
Fantastic from Italy 🔥

Beautiful Basses
i like both sounds, great cover! i prefer the jason sound
Great job I like both versions. Did you know that Cliffs Rickynhaveca mudbucker in neck podition and jazz bass pick up in bridge position?
Thanks mate! Yes, and also a guitar pickup at the bridge. The secret weapon.
Sick Ricky friend

I much prefer Cliff's style. Pick just sounds out of place here, too calculating and robotic. Twangy, even. Either way loved the video.
100
Damn that black Rickenbacker is a beauty! But the tone on the Spector takes it for sure.

Unpopular opinion: Jason had a better tone
and it's unpopular for a reason
no it's not cliffs tone was extremely muddy there's a reason why it's not that loud @@nuupez6648
Jason had more of a clank while Cliff had that roaring thump.
The Spector sounds great but the Rickenbacker had a lot of mojo on Cliff’s hands too, don’t forget that.
I kinda like the pick sound on Creeping Death
jasons sounds kinda more evil but in a sense that his tone is like more dreading. but cliff just sounds like a god of thunder. its so heavy
Hi bassman
Could you please tell the exact settings of the sansamp (plug-in?) and what you did for Comp and Eq? Sounds so good!! Thx
I don’t remember everything, but I think I left everything relatively flat but boosted the presence and drive controls a little bit. Compressor was mainly on the low frequencies.
Rick all day!
that Rick kicks ass! is it a custom?
No, 4003 standard.
Quick question in regards to the Rickenbacker tone, what settings are used to create the muffled tone? I am in love with it.
that's a sick rickenbacker! did you buy it like that or did you customize it?
Thanks! I bought it like this but I bought it used. Maybe the previous owner customized it.
👏👏👏👏👏
Jason !! Самый лучший басит Металлики , на все времена!! После его ухода, даже не возникает желание слушать новое..
Fuckin amazing bro
How did you do the spector tone?
Many mid? Treble? Less bass?
I'm interested in that kind of Equalization
Both pickups, treble and bass boosted, Sansamp.

Hi. What pedals are you using with the basses ? Whats the brand of strings of the Spector and the Rickenbacker basses ? Thanks
Strings are D‘Addario Pro Steels .45-105. I used no pedals but some plugins. Sansamp BDDI for the Spector, Big Muff for the Rick.
Sorry, it wasn’t a Big Muff, it was a ProCo Rat.
Where is Jason interlude?
Cliff forever the best
Muy bueno. Aguante Cliff y Jason. Lo pude ver a METALLICA en eL 93 ARGENTINA . jason te volaba la peluca😂😂😂
Cliff 4 Life, Jason is good? But Cliff was a God
Ambos são fodas!
cliff heavily modded his rick, it’s sounds very different from this video
Did Jason really play it all with alternative picking instead of pure downstroke as both guitars? Oo
Trujillo plays Warwick ?? am i right?
And a lot of other brands.
Jason and cliff played more different notes. Heres its basically just pick vs fingera
What about rob? I think he is both of them combined
i wish a Ricky could sound like an NS2
in the mix cliff is best, the sound is subjective, to me cliff sounds the best
The youtuber here plays better than Cliff. So that might be it.
Spector has the best sound🔥

Cliff forever !!!!
There's a difference, but live in a large stadium it's tough to say.
Nice job!
On Ric, is it "vintage" tone (tone pot pulled)?
Thank you! It's a 2005 Ric, so it doesn't have the push pull pot.
Jason played the "die" part differently tho
Love both but the Rick fits better in the mix
Cliff burton all the way
Why did I think this was CG?
