ABOUT ME I grew up in a cabinet shop and was a born to be woodworker. In the past few years when work slowed in the custom cabinet industry I converted a few friends Vans and SUV's so they had more storage for adventuring, work, or just the weekend beach getaway. Before I knew it I had my own business making people's ideas come to life. I design and build all kinds of custom wood work and vehicles here at my shop in Huntington Beach, California! Dude I have been searching for someone that used this rack system. We used it in our race trailers for years and they seem to make so much sense. I also like how you didn't frame out the entire wall seems like a lot of weight savings. I am subscribing right now. Thanks.

Cool. I also made our van bed removable because we do a lot of construction, so hauling large things like plywood or whatever. I just installed a 2x3 along each side of the van with some bolts, then I made 4 separate panels with 2x3 frames and plywood on top. Slide them over the side 2x3 supports and screw 2 screws each side for each frame panel. Unscrew the screws and take out the 4 panels and you've got lots of room to haul. But I have also found that for certain things we can just keep the bed in to haul lots of things too. Like if needed, we can even slide plywood and things like that on top of the bed. Just remove the mattress/bedding etc.

Great system for the bed. Only change I would make is to have slats for the base because a solid bed base makes the mattress go mouldy in a van; too much moisture build up. Ikea makes doing slats super easy, you can even buy them with their own pre-constructed frame (£80 for a king size) if you haven't got the tools to make a groove in your side supports (£30 without the frame for a king size). Thanks for sharing.

Are you worried at all about having rigid pieces of wood across the span of the van? I seem to remember reading that allowing some flexion to occur in the van walls is important while driving. Also can the van wall pillars support the body weight of all the bed material and 2 full grown adults? I have always assumed that is why you see so few builds like this, but this is certainly a lot simpler and more space-conscious than building boxes!

@@SolidWoodWorxwhat kind of bolts did you use? And did you drill holes for the bolts? My Transit only has one hole on each end

@@shannonyoung9870 they don't line up at all, so I assumed he drilled holes into the interior walls.
I mounted the rail to a 2x6 and drilled through the wood, and still I was only able to do two bolts per side. I used m6 rivnuts, which you use a rivet tool to insert, and then inserted m6 50mm bolts to hold them in place. That being said it is very sturdy and holds up great.

How much would a setup like this run if I were to have it done professionally by someone like yourself. My mom is interested in a similar setup and someone quoted her $8K. I think her setup included some cabinets and that's it, no bathroom, no kitchen, no shower. Just a bed and some cabinets. 8K seems a bit steep so I told her we should look for someone else.

Is the e track stable enough with just the distal attachments? How did you secure the e track to the frame? Did you use crossnuts? Thank you!

I googled distal attachments because I overheard those words at a physical therapy session some while ago. So were you serious or do builders of conversion vans use that vernacular? geezus, dude.
