I was torn on wether or not to comment on this...... but on thing that I have learned is that it must give what was freely given to me. This song saved my life just over two years ago I found my fiance dead in bed from a overdose.... within 24 hours I had lost the woman I loved and custody of my daughter who was in the house. I was broken, scared, alone, depressed, scared, angry just to say a few. I listened to this song everyday for a year and with this song and the fellowship I have stayed clean last person I used with was my fiance. today I am going to college I have my daughter back and have been clean for over two years this song spoke to me and helped me to gain the courage and strength to push through and better my life.... I thank you and so does my daughter for helping me gain this life beyond my wildest dreams! I am free today from the grasp of active addiction and today I am truly happy!
I cannot comprehend anyone not liking this song. I've struggled with bipolar disorder and addiction for many years and this is just...perfect. I'm doing so much better, and this song reminds me of where I came from and to keep going on the right path.
I love this song so fucking hard. Used to listen to it when I was really depressed, now listen to it when I am grateful... happy to still be here. Real music makes you feel emotions deep down inside...
So many of Macklemore's songs deserve so much more recognition. Sad thing is there never gonna get it cause this stuff is way to real to ever hit the radio.
Sometimes it takes the slightest push in the right direction--the smallest gesture from a stranger, someone saying sorry, someone saying I love you--that can make all the difference, and a song can definitely be that. Peace and love, guys.
I find the thing that attracts me most to his music is how raw and honest it is, you can feel the emotion in it. Theres a humanity in he what sings about that we can all relate to.
This really helped me get through my Jr. Year of HS in 2011. Crazy how much has changed in 6 years. This song takes me back down memory lane. Also reminds me how genuine Ben (Macklemore) was when he was establishing himself.
About a month ago before I discovered Macklemore, I was talking to my dad about rap. He told me, "Rap now is horrible. If you listen to the old rap songs, they actually have messages." I asked like what, skeptical, but he just shook his head and kept walking. Now this might not be old rap, but the messages are amazing. Just like old rap.
Your dad is right. It goes all the way back to Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five. Look up their song "The Message". It definitely sounds old, but it has a message about how hard it is to live in the hood. Just remember, there's a difference between rap and Hip-Hop. "Rap is something you do. Hip-Hop is something you live." Hip-Hop is a cultural movement that has it's roots in street culture of New York in the 70s. Read the Wikipedia page about Afrika Bambaataa. He was the one who took the phrase "hip-hop" and created a movement out of it. His community organization, Zulu Nation, taught "Peace, Unity, Love, and Having Fun". Hip-Hop is supposed to be about living a positive life, but these days, people mostly rap about thuggin', clubbin', gettin' high, and gettin' laid. There's nothing wrong with dance music, but you don't get a balance of all the different styles of rap and Hip-Hop on the radio or MTV. Just the trendy club music. Check out KRS-One. He is the Philosopher and one of Hip-Hop's most passionate historians. He has lots of albums, and there are lots of videos on UA-cam of his lectures and public speaking. Peace.
This song is getting me through another day. I was born with an uncurable skin condition that sometimes covers my whole body. Some days I feel my life is too hard to keep living, but I swear to got this song gives me hope
Hold your head up, there's a light in the sky. I know you're fed up, but you must try to survive. Each moment's precious, don't let life pass you by- Keep focused, keep your eyes on the prize. A friend of mine once told me, We have many paths in this journey. They act in different directions So when you question don't be worried, It's not a wrong one- Beauty can be found in all of them. You'll meet people whose paths intersect But you don't know how long you'll walk with them, Cause' the truth is, and it's so hard, but you'll never know How long we'll continue with our loved ones down this rugged road. The path veers and it's clear that we must steer alone. I've learned if you can't hold on to that moment that exists- Let it go. Cause' freedom is god. Freedom is acknowledging the mask you have on And possessing the strength to take it off. Freedom is accepting every step of the path And when it's hard having faith in the ability to embrace that That's where you are, And this is it. The same shit that we work towards, But go against in the same sense. My friend hit me to some game and truth unravelled, she said "The brighter the light, the darker the shadow", And since I'm on cliche terms, knowing is half the battle. But I don't know, So I just go with what was destined. Life can be a burden or a blessing, The choice is yours to be connected. It's there if you want it, you got it, now let it. Hold your head up, there's a light in the sky. I know you're fed up, but you must try to survive. Each moment's precious, don't let life pass you by- Keep focused, keep your eyes on the prize. I feel like I have nothing to give right now, This is my trial, tribulations, and it must go down, But where's the up? I'm stuck with the broken smile, No jokin' now, wantin' to grab a swish and smoke this out. The moment of a man choosing what path I will go down Do I give in, give up, or get up and live right now? With a split gut, pick myself up and spit my style, This is the only thing that can holds my ground. You're born into this world alone and alone you'll go out All I have is myself and everyone else I doubt. You can only trust yourself and depend on the help of the pound Inside the chest that beats with the breath of the now. No sunshine when she's gone, I can only see clouds. No homies can hold me down, the spirit's testing me now But I can withstand this world, but it seems so foul Flood of emotions, it's like I'm being held down to drown. Hell's right around the corner, but I can turn it around. You always have a choice, no matter the situation, you're not bound, To nothing, no one. You're chosen for this job, This is your life, you can't escape this bitch when it's hard. Just know that it passes, but you'll collect scars- They never go away, but they will make you who you are. This is a beautiful struggle, I share it in song cause' I can't control this, remember: the moment's beyond us. Hold your head up, there's a light in the sky. I know you're fed up, but you must try to survive. Each moment's precious, don't let life pass you by- Keep focused, keep your eyes on the prize.
I'm still listening to this song in 2024. It has saved me in thousand different ways, on a thousand different days. Thank you Macklemore for authoring this soulful masterpiece.
Annasanejane Giantgoldwarrior Both of you haha, i wasn't saying it in a bad way haha, i just meant as in most people here will have been following for a while and definitely won't be the people who have only heard Can't hold us, Same :Love and Thrift shop and class Macklemore as their favorite artist
Heard this song 6 years ago. Was working abroad, away from my fam. My dad died the same year. He always reminds me to keep focused and keep my eyes on my goals. I was about to give up the same year. Then I heard this song. I pointed up in the sky and told my pa that I'm still holding on. Until now I'm fighting for every new shit that comes along. This song got me by, out of so many bad nights, days, overnights, straight shifts and terrible circumstances. I'm glad I heard this on my mix 6 years ago.
That's the one I needed to hear . Thanks I will. That's exactly what we all need to do when we lose something we thought we would have forever. Don't let it break you. Move on , people change grow up and apart. It was meant to be.
Macklemore in my eyes is one of the truest mc’s to ever record, made me realize what sobriety can be. Seeing him live with Binary Star was the best concert I have ever been too. I hope to meet him again one day, happily ❤
I kinda get annoyed when people say "thrift shoppers" or hate on people for not knowing about him before he got better known, I found him because of thrift shop and I have fell in love with his songs, I am happy that he got "mainstream" without that he wouldn't of gotten so popular.
Look if people didn't like his music, then he wouldn't be where he is right now. Everyone that's listening to him isn't listening to him just because he's at the top, they listen to him because he speaks the truth and touches peoples hearts. And soon he shall change the whole world of Rap & Hip Hop for the better.
yo david goriola, if your life is so bad that a simple song can change your life then you'r not half as bad off as you think. don't get me wrong man you're in a tight spot, but you're doing better that those that don't have the option of even hearing music brother. trust me man, i've had to eat out of dumpsters and it sucks, but at least you had the option of hearing music you didn't have to make up in your head man. trust me man, it gets better, i promise.
I remember being on the bus listening to this on my way to pick up. I broke down knowing I’ve gotten out of hand and felt like there was nothing i could do about it. But at the same this song gave me hope. I’ve been clean for 2 years now.
Macklemore is the type of artist the radio needs. I miss finding shit on the radio and looking up said artist's music, to find real music. More or this needs to happen.
Thank you for clearing my mind before blowing it up :') This song helped me out alot. Had the worst break up ever 9 months ago and listened to this song yesterday, when i was at my personal ground zero. Magically helped to get over it. As it still hurts like hell, it's now getting better. :) Thanks Mackie:')
I was playing this song in my car and my freinds were like he came out with new songs? I wanted to slap them in the face because they said they were fans since the beginning. But to the the beginning was thriftshop. -_-
i honestly liked this album alot more then the heist, even tho it wasn't bad either. thrift shop did change his audience into a bunch of hipsters tho =/ hes still got great subject matter tho
the only reason I found language of my world in like 2008 or 2009 was because I typed penis song in UA-cam so if macklemore didn't make a song about wanting to have a bigger penis I never would of found language of my world
Went to see Macklemore & Ryan Lewis in Manchester last week...Believe me these guys are amazing both on record and more so live. Truly inspirational....Maclemore, Ryan Lewis we love you and your music
This song kept me alive at 17. Now it’s getting me through some way different battles. 2025, be good to my people. Be good to our nations and save the children. ❤

Thanks to not only Macklemore but all artists ... it’s because of people I’m still here ... I was able to see the beauty in many passions ... so far music, aquariums, cars and art are forms of expressions that allowed me to hold on when I was gonna let go ... I thought about it ... and someone like Macklemore or Mac miller that made a lot of music to help people ... and it became their passion to create music ... people I’ve never met before like Macklemore or Mac miller played a big part in me still being here ... when you have no one left you can always just turn on some tunes and chill out a little bit ... even if it’s a small piece of happiness ... take it ... take the happiness when you can and where you can ... I started fixing cars and listening to a lot of music and watching movies and anime’s ... while starting my aquarium ... now I’m a dad and life is getting good ... I don’t take drugs no more and don’t sell drugs no more I got my license back after revocation for street racing. I moved far away from all that mess with my wife and baby boy ... it’s gonna get better guys ... don’t give up and what helped me is seeing that forms of expressions can save lives. Something small today may lead to something big tomorrow ...
this song helps me get through my problems it keeps my hopes up it shows me i have a strong future. if u can send this to people you know that is down in the dirt
Macklemore really deserves to be known for these kind of songs not just because of thrift shop. but these songs are too touching to ever get past youtube...
ben be killing all his songs, meaning in everone no matter what, even if he could he usually doesnt cuss just shoes how much he cares about each song and how much they mean to him
This Song , Helps You Through High And Low ? 3Million Views On This Song But Yet Again Gangnam Style Has 1 Billion , So 3 Million Is Nothing ? Gangnam Style Helps No One. Gangnam Style Is For At 6 Year Old's Birthday Parties. Macklemore You Deserve Alot More Support. - Avig.
2019, had this album on my video ipod in 2009. Saw him perform The Heist two days before it was released at a suprise free debut show for the first 600 to show up at Neumos in Seattle. Might be the best concert I've ever been to.
When Macklemore raps I actually believe what he says. He actually thinks, knows, and experiences what he raps about. That's truth. Alot of mainstream rappers do the opposite. They're too afraid to rap about their lives. The truth. They rap themselves up full of false words and anything to sell an album. For them, the studio is prison but to Macklemore the studio is a lighthouse for him to draw America back to reality.
This song has helped me through some times. I always can count on it to keep me up when I'm feeling down. Thats why I love macklemores music, its inspiring. It has an actual meaning to it.
was jammin this in '10-'11 before I moved to Seattle. Macklemore blew up in 2012 from Thrift Shop...his own hometown didn't know he was dope before the mainstream shit. This song and Fallin made me appreciate his music
By far my Favorite Macklemore song!! A guy said to me a couple yrs ago... I'm not a big Macklemore fan he's mainstream... I says Pardon?? Hhahahaa what a world :P
Dont sell yourself short, you are definitely one of the nicer souls I have met on the tormenting wormhole that is the internet. I respect you because you dont hide behind your computer to state your opinions, we need more like you around here :)
I actually fell in love with macklemores music way back in 2011. I know that's not as old school as some fans but whatever. He was hosting the blue scholars release party for cinematropolis. Awesome album BTW. Thank goodness for blue scholars because I looked up who this macklmore dude was and discovered some music that would change my life. He is silly, and deep and awesome. I'm sad he's so big because now he's not around seattle quite so much. But hey the world gets to experience what we kept hidden in Seattle for so long. Anyway this was one of my favorites songs. He didn't play it when I saw him at bumbeshoot, but when he played it when I saw him at the show he did in seattle in 2012? It gave me chills. Step cousins were there as was xperience. He is a top notch entertainer who gives a damn about the message he sends.
This is the Macklemore song that deserves to have billions of views
I was torn on wether or not to comment on this...... but on thing that I have learned is that it must give what was freely given to me. I'm so happy for you fam!! That's what music gives us...hope
You give me so much hope. Thank you
Hello I'm so proud of you I hope you're doing well today!!
Damn only 71 people found this inspiring???🤔🤔🤔
This is the true Macklemore. Come back man. We're all fans of the lyrics that speak to our souls.
Ten Thousand Hours has great lyrics, from The Heist
Kevin has good lyrics from the unruly mess
"Freedom is God. Freedom is acknowledging the mask you have on and possessing the strength to take it off"
let that sink in for a second
i read this comment as that part played
Cadey Heiskell same her
Kevin Ayers - Confessions of Dr. Dream and Other Stories
let that sink in now
Part gets me every single time
I cannot comprehend anyone not liking this song. I've struggled with bipolar disorder and addiction for many years and this is just...perfect. I'm doing so much better, and this song reminds me of where I came from and to keep going on the right path.
Still doing good?
Bless your heart... It has proven to be strong... Keep at it because it is always there when you need it! 🙏🕊️🔥🕊️

I remember when this video had 16,000 views. Always knew he was gonna blow up one day.
+crazymonkey1953 same bro, holy shit. visiting this again after 5 years and it has 4 mil, crazy.
*How to get hipsters to like your comment:* Say you remember something before it became popular.
+crazymonkey1953 Or butthurt people that just discovered it and act hard :/
Benjamin Buttons lol aka hipster. Idk if hard is the right word though.
Can’t believe I was 11 listening to this song and playing Mw2 wow. I’m 26 now and just remembered this outta no where
Literally same bro 😂 I’m 25 tho
"You always have a choice, no matter the situation you're not bound."
This means the world to me.
Truth
This song has gotten me out of killing myself several times. First song I heard of his. Forever a true Macklemore fan.
If a song can change your mind from suiciding you're overreacting. Yes, a song can help you through hard times, but don't overreact.
Siruniji It's not overreacting?
Siruniji A million people have had it worse than me, so.
Sometimes it takes the slightest push in the right direction--the smallest gesture from a stranger, someone saying sorry, someone saying I love you--that can make all the difference, and a song can definitely be that. Peace and love, guys.
Sheridan O'Donnell Can work in the opposite way also
I legit cried the first time I heard this song many years ago, hadn't listened to it in a few years. Cried again. Amazing indeed.
This is one of those songs that is timeless. It brings me back to myself when I'm depressed. Much respect
I find the thing that attracts me most to his music is how raw and honest it is, you can feel the emotion in it. Theres a humanity in he what sings about that we can all relate to.

ponalu123 hold yo head up miss
ponalu123 haha
ponalu123 praying
Hold your head up, there's a light in the sky.
I know you're fed up, but you must try to survive.
Each moment's precious, don't let life pass you by-
Keep focused, keep your eyes on the prize.
A friend of mine once told me,
We have many paths in this journey.
They act in different directions
So when you question don't be worried,
It's not a wrong one-
Beauty can be found in all of them.
You'll meet people whose paths intersect
But you don't know how long you'll walk with them,
Cause' the truth is, and it's so hard, but you'll never know
How long we'll continue with our loved ones down this rugged road.
The path veers and it's clear that we must steer alone.
I've learned if you can't hold on to that moment that exists-
Let it go.
Cause' freedom is god.
Freedom is acknowledging the mask you have on
And possessing the strength to take it off.
Freedom is accepting every step of the path
And when it's hard having faith in the ability to embrace that
That's where you are,
And this is it.
The same shit that we work towards,
But go against in the same sense.
My friend hit me to some game and truth unravelled, she said
"The brighter the light, the darker the shadow",
And since I'm on cliche terms, knowing is half the battle.
But I don't know,
So I just go with what was destined.
Life can be a burden or a blessing,
The choice is yours to be connected.
It's there if you want it, you got it, now let it.
Hold your head up, there's a light in the sky.
I know you're fed up, but you must try to survive.
Each moment's precious, don't let life pass you by-
Keep focused, keep your eyes on the prize.
I feel like I have nothing to give right now,
This is my trial, tribulations, and it must go down,
But where's the up?
I'm stuck with the broken smile,
No jokin' now, wantin' to grab a swish and smoke this out.
The moment of a man choosing what path I will go down
Do I give in, give up, or get up and live right now?
With a split gut, pick myself up and spit my style,
This is the only thing that can holds my ground.
You're born into this world alone and alone you'll go out
All I have is myself and everyone else I doubt.
You can only trust yourself and depend on the help of the pound
Inside the chest that beats with the breath of the now.
No sunshine when she's gone, I can only see clouds.
No homies can hold me down, the spirit's testing me now
But I can withstand this world, but it seems so foul
Flood of emotions, it's like I'm being held down to drown.

I can't control this, remember: the moment's beyond us.

I hope to meet him again one day, happily ❤
i discovered macklemore through thrift shop, but that got me here so does it matter?
Yeah same, I wasn't here from the start but it's not like we all can be. I'm just living listening to his music new and old
If your enjoying the music, who cares?
Same here but he's now my favourite artist of all times and I listen to it all.
this song really helps me do my homework
doin my hw rn
***** same
Lol, one time I sent my friend a link to this song as a joke cos she was getting really annoyed with her homework.
This song IS homework! A lot of the new-heads need to study.
so true same here
Damn, I remember when this song had like 100,000 views. Atta boy Mack
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYY BETTER THEN 2-CHAINS THIS IS REAL RAP
yo david goriola, if your life is so bad that a simple song can change your life then you'r not half as bad off as you think. don't get me wrong man you're in a tight spot, but you're doing better that those that don't have the option of even hearing music brother. trust me man, i've had to eat out of dumpsters and it sucks, but at least you had the option of hearing music you didn't have to make up in your head man. trust me man, it gets better, i promise.
.. you're a hero..
I like how people complain about Macklemore being mainstream now when only like three of his songs are.
The ChillyWinds and he's got his own label
I remember being on the bus listening to this on my way to pick up. I broke down knowing I’ve gotten out of hand and felt like there was nothing i could do about it. But at the same this song gave me hope. I’ve been clean for 2 years now.
I'm still here fym boi this song it truly amazing
My medicine for the cold winter. :D

Love this song. Macklemore's music has a message in it and it don't talk about money, hoes, drinking and being famous like all this new rap crap

Hang in there friend :)
YNotCMoore Of course. My boyfriend/fiance keeps me going.
Macklemore is the type of artist the radio needs. I miss finding shit on the radio and looking up said artist's music, to find real music. More or this needs to happen.
Thank you for clearing my mind before blowing it up :')
This song helped me out alot. Had the worst break up ever 9 months ago and listened to this song yesterday, when i was at my personal ground zero. Magically helped to get over it. As it still hurts like hell, it's now getting better. :)
Thanks Mackie:')
This song is so inspiring. Gives me goosebumps.
I was playing this song in my car and my freinds were like he came out with new songs? I wanted to slap them in the face because they said they were fans since the beginning. But to the the beginning was thriftshop. -_-
Soooo true
i honestly liked this album alot more then the heist, even tho it wasn't bad either. thrift shop did change his audience into a bunch of hipsters tho =/ hes still got great subject matter tho
This was probably my favorite album. So many powerful tracks.
So true bro, this was my shit 5 years ago
the only reason I found language of my world in like 2008 or 2009 was because I typed penis song in UA-cam so if macklemore didn't make a song about wanting to have a bigger penis I never would of found language of my world
RIP Norway 😔
RIP Norway
Went to see Macklemore & Ryan Lewis in Manchester last week...Believe me these guys are amazing both on record and more so live. Truly inspirational....Maclemore, Ryan Lewis we love you and your music
This song kept me alive at 17. Now it’s getting me through some way different battles. 2025, be good to my people. Be good to our nations and save the children. ❤
[Hook]
Hold your head up, there's a light in the sky
I know you're fed up, but you must try to survive
Each moment's precious, don't let life pass you by
Keep focused, keep your eyes on the prize
[Verse 1: Macklemore]
A friend of mine once told me, "We have many paths in this journey"
They act in different directions, so when you question don't be worried
It's not a wrong one, beauty can be found in all of them
You'll meet people whose paths intersect, but you don't know how long you'll walk with them
Cause the truth is, and it's so hard, but you'll never know
How long we'll continue with our loved ones down this rugged road
The path veers and it's clear that we must steer alone
I've learned if you can't hold on to that moment that exists-- let it go
Cause freedom is God
Freedom is acknowledging the mask you have on and possessing the strength to take it off
Freedom is accepting every step of the path
And when it's hard having faith in the ability to embrace it, that's where you are
And this is it The same shit that we work towards, but go against in the same sense
My friend hit me to some game and truth unraveled, she said
"the brighter the light, the darker the shadow"
And since I'm on cliche terms, knowing is half the battle
But I don't know, so I just go with what was destined
Life can be a burden or a blessing
The choice is yours to be connected
It's there if you want it, you got it, now let it
[Hook]
[Verse 2]
I feel like I have nothing to give right now
This is my trial, tribulations, and it must go down
But where's the up? I'm stuck with the broken smile
No joking now, wanting to grab a swish and smoke this out
The moment of a man choosing what path I will go down
Do I give in, give up, or get up and live right now?
With a split gut pick myself up and spit my style
This is the only thing that can hold my ground
You're born into this world alone, and alone you'll go out
All I have is myself and everyone else I doubt
You can only trust yourself and depend on the help of the pound
Inside of the chest that beats with the breath of the now
No sunshine when she's gone, I can only see clouds
No homies can hold me down, the spirit's testing me now
But I can withstand this world, but it seems so foul
Flood of emotions, it's like I'm being held down to drown
Hell's right around the corner, but I can turn it around
You always have a choice, no matter the situation you're not bound
To nothing, no one, you're chosen for this job
This is your life, you can't escape this bitch when it's hard
Just know that it passes, but you'll collect scars
They never go away, but they will make you who you are
This is a beautiful struggle, I share it in song cause
I can't control this, remember: the moment's beyond us
macklemore tried for ten years then got sobber & went on from there he was inspried by ten thousand hours so he did not quit you can see it in his gf when after the boston show she started to cry he worked hard glad he never gave up neither should you

I have lyrics from this song tattoo'd across my chest
Hell of a song.
This song got me through bullying
Who’s here in 2023?

are any mac fans here 2017?
2019, had this album on my video ipod in 2009. Saw him perform The Heist two days before it was released at a suprise free debut show for the first 600 to show up at Neumos in Seattle. Might be the best concert I've ever been to.
Macklemore lifts my day up, keep doing what ur doing and DONT go overlly mainstream, stick to ur roots!!!!!!
That beloved laugh saved my life! Thanks G!
I almost got emotional af because I feel like I'm wasting my life eyeet
RIP Norway =(
Steve D wtf are you talking about
truly a fucked up story
too dope tho
When Macklemore raps I actually believe what he says. He actually thinks, knows, and experiences what he raps about. That's truth. Alot of mainstream rappers do the opposite. They're too afraid to rap about their lives. The truth. They rap themselves up full of false words and anything to sell an album. For them, the studio is prison but to Macklemore the studio is a lighthouse for him to draw America back to reality.
This song has helped me through some times. I always can count on it to keep me up when I'm feeling down. Thats why I love macklemores music, its inspiring. It has an actual meaning to it.
sounds like nujabes a little
Shame he's gone, I feel like Macklemore and Jun Seba would be an incredible collaboration
I know you think i'm just sayin' this , but I too was about to kill myself ... until this song came on the radio.
welcome to the comment section, where people find the need to repeat the same lyrics over again.
was jammin this in '10-'11 before I moved to Seattle. Macklemore blew up in 2012 from Thrift Shop...his own hometown didn't know he was dope before the mainstream shit. This song and Fallin made me appreciate his music
Macklemore deserves so much more than he has right now. He deserves a grammy.
I for one would not have heard of Macklemore if it was not for thrift shop. Now, I listen to him all the time and his music moves and influences me.
This song is really helping through my breakup really happy I found it
I love this song so much. SO INSPIRATIONAL DR. Macklemore.
