Let me know what grow light set up you are using - thanks for watching!
Can you plants while still on the seed pellets and the square cardboard looking plant starter.
CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY
I love watching all your vidios I'm nine and planting a garden.
Can you put Cfl bulbs in a desk light lamp ?
I love your videos. And in the summer of 2019 I grew peppers, squash, tomatoes, greens, and herbs
CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY .... hello. Question...would a normal home led bulb work? 6500k and 2300 lumens. I am having trouble getting plant grow light bulbs where I live. I'll be using lights just for foliage ... no blooms. Thanks.
THAT was the technical info that I needed: a min of 1600 lumen and at least 6500 K. My goodness, it was hard to find that info, I lost so much time and so many seedlings... I'm ordering the led lightbulbs with the necessary requirements as we speak. Thank you so much!
5000k and 6500k are great for seedlings (vegetative growth). Give CFL bulbs a try as well. At the lower end of the price spectrum, the CFL bulbs will give you more bang for the buck!
You could also find full spectrum bulbs that emit a purple light and it's what I'm using for growing my vegtables indoors 6500k is good for growth but for flowering and fruit production you want the lower end warm spectrum of lighting, which is around 2000k to 4000k, full spectrum bulbs emit both wavelengths of light I have some really great looking sprouts already but I hope this helps, and doesn't make it confusing lol I've got mine in a grow box setup but will soon be putting them into pots and be indoor growing
Your gallon jugs to hold the shop lights is genius! I was wondering how I could get a setup as cheap as possible, and saw the PVC designs, wood designs, etc...but 2 gallon jugs and 2 PVC pipes has got to be the easiest/cheapest method I've seen so far!
This is the right video for beginner, execellent information, clear voice, clear presentation and beautiful woman... All complete... Thumbs Up! Love you...
Oh my goodness, every time you said, "they get leggy" I had to laugh because my seedlings last year were so, so..."LEGGY". I finally got a grow light and tried it out, but it was a bit too late. I promised that I would do better this year, and this is just the video I need. Thank you.
Try having two lamps so bulbs get to be next to each other, both being LED of 2700 lumens from which one has 6500k (Blueish) and one has 4200k(Redish). That way plant gets Blue and Red, 5200 lumens, and all in between. Just when plant get big, I think you will need 4 lamps at least.
I finally found the video that I indeed! I was feeling very overwhelmed about starting seeds in my small space. I was starting to think I was going to have to spend a lot of money on a nice stand for my light since I don’t currently have room for shelves. I’m pretty sure I’m going to go the shop light, milk jugs, and pvc pipe. Thank you so much. You made it so easy to understand.
This is EXACTLY the video I needed! Made the idea of growing my own seedlings MUCH less daunting. Thank you!
Hello Sammy - perfect timing - once you understand a few basics it's pretty simple and you can start seeds indoors like a pro! What set up do you plan on using? Thanks for watching!
While I think I'd prefer to do the shop light hanging in 2 sand-filled containers, I have cats who are really curious and super annoying when it comes to green things AND lights. I think I will be trying out the large plastic tub setup!
Sammy Star You can put in hooks in the ceiling by hand and hang the lights. My favorite setup I’ve done is buying a rack, about 6 ft tall with 4 or 5 shelves and putting those 2ft T5 bulbs under each shelf for the plants below. Looks great and works great and it’s insanely cheaper than if you were to buy the exact setup. About $600 for something like that in a set. Crazy! Plus I love the clip lights like she showed in the beginning of the video. They’ll go just about anywhere and are very useful with a 60, 65 watt bulb made specifically for plants
CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY hi there love how you explained the lights. So easy to understand. I wanted to know when you grow seedling in plastic dome container and you gradually lift that plastic humid dome for air circulation, how far away should a LED 20w cool daylight with 6500k & 2000 lumen should be set up? Also is it good to put 2 bulbs over plants of different kelvins ex- 2000k and 6500k ? For red and blue temperature?
Yeahh
I just have a fan blow on my plants it moves them around forces them to grow strong. this method along with good light like how she explains in the video works really good to create plants that will survive the transplant outside.
Great timing with the video. I've been using the clamp lights for the past two seasons, and I purchased a discounted LED shop light this past fall. It's listed with 4500 Lumens and 5000K, so I'm hoping that will be sufficient for my seedlings. You and Gary have been a great source of information for my gardening experience. TY.
Not only this video was very helpfull and technical, but also very funny, exciting, and even heart-warming to watch! The right ammount of cleverness and passion! Thank you, regards from Brazil!
That light stand I'd the most amazing thing I've seen!!!!❤️
Hi Kim, Even as an experienced grower, the lumens and Kelvin discussion was very helpful for me. Your other tips are also spot on. Get those bulbs nice and close to make strong plants!
Thank you, very much. Direct and to the point. And not to much talking.
Great info for someone who has never tackled indoor seeds but really wants to. Thank you!
I’ve watched this video 3 times. Love it. I also sent it to my daughter in Australia who like me is going to start seedlings indoors. You are so knowledgeable and I feel you have given me all the basics
I can't believe how simple these set ups are. I am definitely going to try these ideas. Thank you for some terrific hints. And the simple explanations about the different bulbs.
Perfect timing! Great video. You are the only person to explain this where I could understand it! Thank you
Thank you for the clarity and detail in this video. By far one of the more helpful videos.
I found those shop lights (I use the T8's) fit perfectly hanging from a shower curtain rod over the tub in the guest bathroom. And a pro-tip, foil isn't the best for refracting the light off the walls (your grow box?). Use a flat white paint. It's the best you can do. You need refraction, never reflection.
Many thanks.i
I live in NZ and followed your well explained methods for perfect results. And affordable too.
Perfect; to the point, and just when needed in the northern latitudes.
Thank you, Jatinder - glad to be of help! CK
I’ll tell you what, your method is awesome. You are the winner. I love the versatility. Thanks for sharing. Loved it.
i have already watched around 30-40 videos and i got nothing out of them but this video legit taught me everything i mean everything im planning to start an indoor only garden because i live in a flat
Thank you for showing me what I was doing WRONG! This is the first time I’m trying to grow leafy greens indoors and it has been a complete failure! I was about to give up completely until I saw your video. I appreciate your video so much. Now I think I’ll have the right tools for the job, and I’m hopeful for a healthy indoor crop. Thank you!!!
Wow! Who knew? 😂. Sooo good! Ok. I’m on to my 2nd attempt with such good knowledge it’s guaranteed. I’m now subscribed and don’t feel helpless anymore. Thank you so much!
Yesss..spring garden!!.I've watched a ton of videos on lighting and this video is probably the MOST direct and simplest video to listen to what your saying.Goid job!!!
I’ve decided to start a tomato garden and your channel is saving me a lot of time and pain. THANK YOU
I bought a led light for my balcony and noticed that the plants loved it. Later I found out that they are used for plants. In the day they have the normal light and at night I give them a little more. Great Video.
I like your milk bottle uprights for holding the lights. I'm afraid some people may have gotten the impression from your video that t-5,t-8,and t-12 lamps are interchangeable. They are not. Each requires a different ballast to fire the lamps properly and the lamp holders are a different size so you need to buy the fixture and the lamps as a set. Although quite a bit more expensive led agriculture lights are your best option for long life, low energy costs, less heat created. I would recommend buying them if you plan on doing this several times a year for years to come. The cfl's are the lowest cost but they are also being phased out and can be difficult to find now. My local dollar store still carries them but they also are of low quality and most people don't realize that fluorescent lamps only last about six months before the light output changes both in color and intensity. Changing the lamps out several times a year and replacing the fixtures every couple of years can make the costs add up a lot over time. A good led light supposedly will last between 100,000 to 200,000 hrs before degrading. You can also buy led bulbs that screw into the clamp on holders you were using and that's likely to be the cheapest long term light for an inexpensive set up.
That's right! I went to Home Depot and the clerk told me that it's not that easy to just buy the LED T-12 or T-8s and just pop 'em into any receptacle. The guy told me I had to buy a converter, a power cord, chain....ugh...it seemed to complicated for this chic here who knows nothing about all that stuff! I was a bit discouraged.
I should have just bought the CFLs and a cheapy clamp light.
I have been racking my brains on an affordable way to set up some grow lights to take care of my herbs as I bring them indoors over the winter. What a great idea that of the gallon jug filled with sand and the pvc pipe!!!! That will work perfect for me. Thanks also for the links :-)
Thank you for this video. I set my lights but all I have is my ring light for now and I will go out and get the clamp light tomorrow. The ring light is cranked up to the highest level and its really bright
im glad i found this video! i just watched about 200 videos and was still confused. this one is easier to understand and more comfortable :) headed to homedepot now to return the $200 worth of lights i bought yesterday
Thank you for explaining everything so clearly. I’ve tried starting seedlings indoors so many times and they always fail. Now I know why and this year they’ll be great. Thanks so much!
I'm a beginner and yes very helpful.
Extremely helpful light set up information. Direct and to the point. Just what I needed! Satisfies my DIY and thrifty gene at the same time! Simple and easy to understand and construct. And if you use the clear gallon water jugs and paint the PVC pipe and you can get creative with different colors and sand and make it really nice! Thank you so much!!
This was an amazing video. You are so comfortable talking in front of the camera which makes the content enjoyable. Thank you so much!
The K and L explanation was great thank you for taking the time to do so. I hope to do a follow up video reminding gardeners again. With all the excitement of planting it can be easy to forget.
Glad you found the basics of lumens and kelvin helpful, T. Yes, seems like we all need reminders of these things, I'll try to reinforce it in future videos as well, great suggestion. Thanks for watching!
You just saved me from spending a lot of money on very expensive grow light setup. The milk jug and PVC pipe system is brilliant!
Love this , always felt grow lights were to expensive . This is great ; already have the spot lights from other projects . Thanks so much . I have been watching some of your videos for several years and have now subscribed .
I'm using also TL lightbulbs and I recommend to use at least daylight 865 Type one's giving 85 % of colour display and 6500 K. The height of the bulb is also to correlate with soil temperature.
It's also interesting to notice bright efficiency given in lumen/watt.
finally be carefull with glow bulbs radiating heat and may burn the seedlings.
Excellent Presentation - Well done explaining but also demonstrating - Thank you kindly for an excellent video
I agree wholeheartedly, whatever methods it takes to illuminate the seedlings. Diversity is best. Thank you so much: I enjoy
Your enthusiasm and devotion to the plants. It is certainly my muse, so much a part of my life and happiness .
Omg! you have explained the lighting so well! Thank you!
Best video on grow lights!! Thank you so much
One word Fantastic
Thank you very much, the best explanation so far out of so many videos I watched. I have been having issus with leggy seedlings and starting to feel discouraged, you have motivated me to give it another try. Thank you very much!
Very Resourceful of you. I hope this makes the difference.
My mom used to put a fan on low and a distance away from her seedlings , with just enough air movement to make the seedlings m9ve slightly. She said wind is like exercise for plants , and will give you a good strong stem . 9f course this wasnt constant just for a few minutes a day.
Good morning kim🤗 I just love how you explain the how and why of what your doing. You are the A+ TEACHER OF PLANTING LOL!! Thanks and have a great day!
Hi Sally - thanks so much for the feedback - really is encouraging and helps me to know that I am on track. Do you use indoor grow lights? Thanks for watching!
Liked for the thumbnail b4 the vid even started. 💛
Thank you. Your the only person I found to tell me how long to leave the light on when first starting out!
Very awesome grow light set ups! I have the shop light with t8 bulbs.
I hooked it up threw the wooden boards in the ceiling. Quick tip! Get a pack of pulleys ($6-$10 on Amazon), hook them up to the shop light and you will be able to adjust the height when plant grow!
The simplest and best indoor plant light video I have seen so far. Thank you
Aww thanks Charles!! Glad you’re enjoying the vids!! What are you growing?
I love this video!!!! I was gifted a large T5 light set up for my birthday and had no idea how to set it up. I’m going to try the pvc hookup you showed. It’s FREEZING COLD here in Pittsburgh and I’m ready to get things growing. Thank you so much for this wealth of information!
It was the best video for me, granny on a tight budget. I love the pvc pipe in sand bottle!!! Now I’m going shopping now that I know what I need for my seeds thanks a bunch 👍🏽💕
Hola Kim! I’m still using my grow box, made from a cardboard box lined with foil and have a 120w CFL (6500K and 2000L) light hanging inside. It’s enough to start 25 seedlings in 8oz cups. It’s like the plastic tote but I don’t use the clamp or reflector. And it’s the 3rd season I’m using the same box! Great video and information, I’m ready to start my peppers!!! :)
Loved this video. She has a knack for simplifying information
This is the best video I have seen that explains grow lights. Thank you for the clear and concise information
Outstanding video you explained in a understandable way that answered all my questions on indoor lighting for plants 🌱. 👍 Thank You
Jim
fantastic, Kim, thank you so much for making this confusing subject a "no-brainer" :D
what a blessing this video was. I have started microgreens but did not know what to do for a grow light since most are so expensive. I am going to to check out both clamp light ideas. I think instead of sand I will put dried beans or rice in the gallon jugs. Not so messy. I hope to learn more from you. I am excited about growing my own food. : )
so excited - notes made, 3 clamp lights just delivered. Thanks so much for this detailed video. looking forward to my seedlings doing better than last year.
Hi Kim, Great video for some easy to use and versatile lighting! While shopping around for my first lights as I put together a grow closet, I happened upon a great deal for an LED all-in-one "shop-light" style light, 4500 lumens and 6500 Kelvin, energy rated, 4 feet long, and only $28.67 each! (Sam's Club online, shipping was only $6 for 2 of them and you don't have to be a member to shop online either.) LEDs have really dropped in price over the past few months and are much more affordable now it seems..They are already doing a fabulous job as my seedlings come into the world! Those clamp lights are the greatest for giving my Meyer lemon tree supplemental light while it has to be indoors over the winter (zone 8a)!
I love this idea.. while I'm not doing any veggies yet this will be great for my plants and flowers for my garden
Hello Aqua Fina - glad you found the video helpful. From what I have read, for flowering plants you will need a light bulb in the red color spectrum. I'm not an expert on this, so you may want to do more research. The grow lights I am using are suitable for growing vegetable transplants indoors. Because I will transplant them outdoors before they flower and fruit, these lights are perfect. Thanks for watching!
Hi from England in the snow...and thanks for keeping it simple. xxx
Great video. Simple and easy to understand. I will try the shop light set up.
Very very good video ! Thanks for all this precious information !!! 😀
Perfect timing, thank you! I am in zone 9b (northern California) and I carry my grow trays outside every day, so that they can catch sunshine ... but it's not enough, the little plants are very leggy. I will get the clip on lamp, great suggestions!
Thank you for such a wonderful video Kim!
Glad it was helpful! CK
Oh my gosh this video is sooo helpful, thank you so much! I've been looking for inexpensive ways to do grow lights for my plants and this has been incredibly helpful
Thank you for the info this will be the first time I start seeds indoors so your info was very helpful I am going to start with the clamp light hope my seedlings grow well.
Hi Kim, I'm new to planting edibles, this past Fall was the first time and I just planted outside. This is great information for older person (56) just getting started on growing a garden for food not just flowers. Thank you, info much appreciated and explained very well! ;)
Welcome to the wonderful world of gardening - and watch out, you will get addicted feeling of pride knowing you are growing your own tasty, healthy food! Glad the info is helpful - starting your seeds indoors can give you a huge jump on your spring garden. Which set up do you plan to use? Thanks for watching!
The clip one, just because I already spent a lot this Fall, since I didn't have home made compost or anything. I also bought 3 dwarf fruit trees. Anyways I don't have to tell you how easily you can spend a lot, especially with organic plantings. Thanks again! ;)
Oh and the grow light box. ;)
Good video Kim, thanks. After a lot of playing with little set ups, I'm away to build what's basically a 3 foot square and 4 foot high set of drawers. Each one 1 foot high. The inside will be insulated and have mylar inside with a light on each level. so imagine a chest of drawers with lights and plants in it. You could have it in the house or garage without looking like a grow room. I'm going to try and have it automated so a timer for the lights and maybe a soaker hose for watering.
Love it - sounds ingenius - and your living room can still be styling'! Can't wait to see some photos and hear how it works for you. Thanks for watching!
Everything I needed to know about grow lights in one video. Nice job!
Thank you! Just what I needed! So much more clear!
I have under the cabinet lights above my Kitchen counter! I’ll use them, Just have to raise them closer to the lights!
i am new to this but I am going to give it a shot - found this very informative
Thank you this video was very informative, I am a beginner and am starting an indoor herb garden so this was very helpful as I do not have that sunny of an apartment so i am going to need grow light to keep my herbs happy and healthy.
perfect - your herbs will love it! Which set up are you going to use? Thanks for watching!
Thanks Kim!
wow the gallon jug idea is genius!
Simple, straight forward and very informative. Thank you for taking the time to make and share this really helpful video!
Excellent video...clear and concise. Very helpful for the beginner. Thank you.
Great video. Clear and concise. This is very helpful to a novice seed starter. Thanks!
Very helpful, wrote all the numbers down, my first year starting from seed.Thanks.
So helpful! Answered all my questions. This was the first UA-cam video that has. Thank you!
Great video love it thank you
BRILLIANT!!!
Thank you being on a budget this certainly helped:-)
Perfect timing for this video! I was out this week looking at options. I think we’re going to try the grow box. First time starting seeds indoors. So excited!!
HI Rebecca - the grow light box is a perfect way to start. It will be so fun to get your seeds started indoors - will give you a huge jump on your spring garden and allow you so much more variety in the veggies you can grow. You'll love it! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Will be out first year growing seeds indoors and you answered so many questions. God bless.
Very helpful Video. We have limited space in our backyard and this is our first attempt at gardening. We are going to start with the first option of lighting that you demonstrated.
Great ideas! I will be stopping by my local hardware store on the way home from work today. I'm excited to start my seedlings soon
My confusion has cleared. Thank you.
Thank you for this!!! Just set my timer for 18 hours for my indoor lettuce. Great info. Only had it on for 8hrs.
Hello Dana - perfect timing! What set up are u using?
Right now, I have a Black Magic LED grow light in a desk lamp for now. I've just ordered an adjustable table top set up though. The current grow bulb is too heavy and weighing the lamp down and at this point, I'm done trying to do this cheap lol
Yes, Dana, sometimes you do have to break down and spend the cash, but good for you for getting started however you can! Good luck with your new set up!
CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY Referring to this again. Still having issues putting together a new system but we’ll see how things go!
Thanks. You are the best educator.
This video is comprehensive. I went to many videos before this and none explained it as clearly as you did. Thanks.
Do you have a video on watering these peet pellet seedlings?
Great video, thank you for the added advice. I've been indoor growing for 10 years
Thankyou so much I have had so much trouble and this is the first video that I have watched on this subject that makes sense. On my second batch of trying to grow lettuce for cuttings. First batch git really leggy and molded!. Second batch I got a grow light but apparently didn't have it close enough. I have the set up on my covered patio But I may bring g inside because it's getting hot here in Florida and I keep reading that if it's too hot ,lettuce will have problems. So aggravated at the learning curve just to grow lettuce!
So glad your finding the vids helpful!! Stay with we only learn by our mistakes- you might try growing your lettuce in containers so that you can bring it inside or to a cooler spot in your yard when it gets really hot- hope this helps!
Thank you so much for this video! This has been the best seedling/light video I've seen. And for me personally this video had perfect timing since my plan for tomorrow was to get my first seedling growth station set-up.
Hello AE - thanks for the huge compliment - with a few basics, grow lights are pretty simple to understand and set up. Glad the timing worked out so well - how are you setting yours up?
CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY : I put a small green house stand in my unused upright shower and tied up T5 lights. :)
Oh my gosh! Thank you!!!! You made this so simple to understand!
Finally something I can work with, thanks a million.
