      I did planted sweet potato last yr. During winter I put them indoor but the root rice aphids came in too with them or with other plants from outside and keep.sprsying them with all kinds of spray neem oil with soap water solution, but doesn't work. Their population decrease but I still see them around... I tried amonia bleach also 3 % hydrogen peroxide. Their population become lesser and lesser. I hope sooner or.later they are gone. Can't wait for the summer to bring them.out to remove the flying aphids gin the house. They attacked all my plant, kalamansi, snake plants they live inside the soil.., oregano... my sweet potato died too due to rice root aphids..

    You can plant extra sweet potatoes next to the chicken coop. The chickens fertilize the sweet potatoes, and you can feed the greens to the chickens as they grow. Then at the end of the year you harvest the sweet potatoes and the chicken meat.

      The sweet potatoes are great! Being that you're in London and have access to tons of foreign markets, you make be able to find TONS of potatoes that aren't available here. You could grow like 20 different kinds and see what works/tastes best for your climate! FYI, sweet potatoes are tropical only plants, so the first frost WILL kill them. Keep an eye if you're planning on growing through winter.

      Today a friend and I were just discussing using 9 buckets, Planting 3 at a time, after some growth, going to try to grow 3 more after 1 month, then another 3 after than. 1 Month later, the first 3 buckets should have yeilded 15-30 sweet potatos to last a month. Then replant. Not sure if it'll work, but then we'd always have one set of 3 buckets coming into harvest.

      @hillbilly-homestead  Рік тому

      You want as long as possible, a lot of the times if you can get to 120 days plus that's the best. I ended up pulling them around 85 to 90 days last year, and the results were basically a lot of roots but no potatoes. Maybe you could say the roots were starting to get fatter, but I definitely did not get enough time.

    Loved this, especially the concise and professional way you presented the topic. I got here by way of Haxman's growing towers video, and am curious if it's possible to grow these in something similar. I live in a city in a desert, so growing space is at a premium.

    • @hillbilly-homestead
      @hillbilly-homestead  2 роки тому +2

      I am not sure about that specific product as I have no direct experience with it. HOWEVER, I know usually the growing tower kind of systems usually are tough for root vegetables to grow. I know some soil based towers you can get carrots and radishes, but aquaponics/aeroponics style systems often produces really small roots. (which is the parts we want to eat).
      I know there are tons of patio gardeners using these container pots with success. I helped my friend setup his garden as he has limited space. amzn.to/3qTKfNP.
      For watering you can try these globes. Since you're in a desert environment, they get water directly to the roots where it's needed, w/o drying out. Its also easy to see if/when you need to rewater. amzn.to/3LslbqL

      If you have the ability to dig swales outside, contour the land to start holding water when it does rain and it can soak in. If it's possilbe to divert AC unit condensation, or grey water from a sink, those can be used to water raised beds. Most important part is keeping everything moist. if you can spend $20-50 on tubes and pipes, you could probably make something that self waters.

    Here in the PNW we have weeks of rain at a time, what are the temperatures do I need to grow sweet potatoes? Can I grow them in a greenhouse?

    • @hillbilly-homestead
      @hillbilly-homestead  10 місяців тому

      Hey! Fantastic question. Sweet potatoes are definitely a tropical plant so they tolerate absolutely 0 cold weather that would produce a freeze. If you can control your temperatures above freezing inside of a greenhouse then it'd be definitely possible. I actually was doing exactly what you were thinking in the fall, I brought my sweet potatoes inside but unfortunately I left a window open for the greenhouse and cold air got to it and killed off the sweet potatoes immediately. So I can't give you direct experience answer but I know there are tons of people who successfully grow all the time so long as they can control the temperature inside. I believe it's something like 120 to 150 sunlight days of warmth that will go from slip to actual harvesting. The follow-up video to this 1 you see I only gave mine like 90 days so I had extensive root systems but did not really have the time for new sweet potatoes to grow. Seems like you can control your temperature, time in the soil is better maximized.

    I plan on a Philippines retirement. I have bananas and mangos and coconut growing in my lease now. I wanted to grow every sort of sweet potato I can find with my bananas. I figure a bamboo trellis between bananas would make for better use of the land. I understand that it is 120 to 140 days to harvest for these and peanuts. I’m concerned with food security also. I can grow the yams better then I can rice and corn

    • @hillbilly-homestead
      @hillbilly-homestead  Рік тому

      Absolutely! Sweet potatoes are also largely typhoon resistant. I know its some of the only crops that can be grown on islands consistently. You may be southern enough that you can grow all year round. If you don't get a frost, you cant just keep growing and growing and growing. About 1month before you harvest, i'd cut a section and put it water so it can start forming roots.

    How do you get the sweet potato to sprout? The store ones never seem to do that

    • @hillbilly-homestead
      @hillbilly-homestead  2 роки тому +1

      I'm actually going to be making a video about it. Store bought ones SHOUD work. They'll naturally start to sprout if you can catch them in time. However, you can put them into water (change the water every few days) and put it in indirect sunlight, it will likely sprout. Best method which i'm making a video about is to half bury them in soil. It'll start t send some roots down, and start to send sprouts up then you can harvest. NOW, dirty secret about store bought ones. They could have been irradiated and it'll never grow. This kills all the bacteria and stuff initially so can be shelf stable also, but it'll also not sprout again from what I understand. I have a 70/30 ratio, 70% of the time i can get slips, 30% of the time It'll just start to rot. If it starts to rot, you can try cutting the rotten section off, but it's likely too late at that point, just start over.
