Hey! I'm the one who built and played this deck and I'm super glad and excited that you decided to check it out! Because I'm not a huge fan of spending money on virtual cards, I tried to build as competitive a deck I could by using the free bots and bulk bots for super cheap cards. I think you did a great job evaluating the deck, the only thing I would say is that the scorpions offer more lifegain and are somewhat resistant to removal by still draining for 2 even if it dies. They are a great stabilizer against aggro when underworld dreams is too slow. I've been continuing to tinker with the list and would suggest anyone interested in building something similar to look at "Drag to the underworld" as another budget removal spell that I've replaced heartless act with, and "Bastion of Remembrance" as another way to both stabilize against aggro. Other than that, as Seth stated, "Castle Locthwain" and "Swift End // Murderous Rider" feel like no brainers with a bigger budget. I hope everyone enjoys my deck and again I'm really happy to see you take a look at it! :)

Pioneer is such a great format. I really hope they keep supporting it. Like as long as WotC keeps banning the unfair turn 3-4 combos the format has a bright future. It was just hurt by the pandemic really.

I run a similar deck in arena historic. I've got 2 phyrexian reclamations and 4 phyrexian arenas alongside the castle locthwains for card advantage, to turn the life gain the vampires and Gary's bring into card advantage, and a couple of Ayara's to chip in some extra drain for the same reason. Ravenous chupacabra, phyrexian reclamation, and ayara are a nice 3 cards to have vs anything with creatures too. Chups for removal with pips.

My opponent was playing a legacy control deck. Using Forbid, Force of Will, Thawing Glaciers, etc. Just complete control. After the game had drug on and on he was getting ready for the kill with Morphling (when it was considered the best creature in magic) I have nothing in the board basically. He has a full grip of counters and removal. But I top deck my one copy of Obliterate! His all powerful Legacy deck has to scoop to a block deck! Haha
Mono black devotion was my first ever modern deck because I loved playing Gary in our tabletop groups, I always love seeing these devotion decks in other formats
I saw a vampire tribal deck that ran Gray Merchant as a late game win con. Used Sorin to cheat in early game Champion of Dusk too. Was pretty sweet. Wish it was powerful enough for modern
Was running something like this in the Artisan event over the weekend. Gary hits hard, and Dreams + the Black Enchantment removal gave you a chance against the Tutelage decks.
I can believe that someone had the Magic Gods on their side for one league and went 3-1 with this. With upgrades do you try and make it as control-ish as possible?
Seth, you must check out the math behind ladder matchmaking by Hareeb al-Saq on Twitter. It explains why bad decks do decent on ladder. I think that the whole Meme or Dream series just exposes even farther how bad the MTGA mm system is.
I watched yesterday. But need to compliment the deck, all things considered that was fantastic. Hard to say if it was perfectly or expertly built and what sort of changes could be made on budget (LSV, for example you think he is pretty good, could probably modify it still within severe budget constraints and make it better, but I don't really know how). But I think that was pretty damn good all things considered.
I made a super jank mono black of shambling ghast.deadly dispute. Serrated scorpion. Gary's. 4 feed the swarms.and recursion. Deck was like 17$ total and I'm pretty sure that's only because deadly is a 3 dollar common
Kinda neat that you could build this deck on Arena for Historic, with the exception of the Nightveil Specter. I feel like it wouldn't do well in Historic though. Of course would cost you more than $1 :-)
Just built it and honestly trading out some cards for stuff like Ayara and the new Sheoldred has done wonders, but still won’t win a game every time. Still fun tho.
The first deck seth played against a similar to a deck I have except I dont have chandra in main and lovestruck beast isnt in there and my deck is a gruul aggro deck with dinosaurs
You would've won vs Esper Control if you'd sent that 1 point of damage from the Dusk Legion Zealot at their face instead of at Teferi. Every little thing counts when you're playing an underpowered deck, I guess.
that's the whole point of playing mtgo right now right? finally we can play magic for a cheap now. arena dorks a donking away money trying to play "simulated magic" while we play real paper like magic for pennies online. even though the cards on mtgo now are not worth investing in, im looking at the good side and its the cheapest way to play magic except for some super in fashion meta cards, the non meta decks which takes people by surprise are basically free to buy. its pretty obvious that the real magic purist prefer mtgo much much more than arena.
Seth, Hareeb just posted an article explaining how ranking system on Arena at the moment, and how it is easily exploitable to match against weak players. This explains why meme decks get easily 6-0 even on platinum or higher. In fact, Hareeb got consistent 91-6 records on multiple seasons. I think the algorithm is the explanation of why meme decks like this exist, even on MTGO. I'm sorry to crush anybody's dream but after understanding the algorithm, this series lost all the appeal to me.
That doesn't really have anything to do with MTGO though, completely different systems at work, especially with how leagues on Magic Online work. MTGO has its own issues sure, but they aren't the same as Arena's problems.
All sets from Return to Ravnica / M14 to today are legal. But fetchlands are banned so no perfect manabase. Also WotC has made it clear they don't want turn 3 combos to run rampant so they banned a lot of cheap combo decks. A very fun format if you like standard and modern but you feel like modern is too degenerate. In pioneer you have time to set up cool engines and get synergies going. While in modern you are often dead on turn 3 if you didn't draw your hate card. It's my favorite format as a brewer because the card pool is pretty big and you can still be competitive with janky stuff. 😀

I played it in a burn deck before and killed a player who had played iona naming red it was the single most jaw dropping thing you can do to a man.

My guess is that someone built this as a challenge and/or as a way to get acquainted to the Pioneer metagame before building a tiered deck.

you can replace nightveil specter with thief of sanity. only. gives one devotion but you dont have to hit lands
@@MidgarMerc Thief of Sanity requires blue mana to cast. That might not be worth it. Maybe some copies of Fatal Push instead for more removal?
You could use the OG Hypnotic Specter as that is in Historic, but the 2 toughness vs. 3 makes it pretty bad in a Stomp format.
Mono-Black Devotion is a real deck in Historic, I think you run Nighthawk Scavenger or Phyrexian Arena in that slot.
