Will conscription ever happen in the UK? | The News Agents

  • The head of the army - General Sir Patrick Sanders - has said the UK needs to train and equip a citizen army to be on the front door for any future war with Russia.
The PM has hastily ruled out conscription but on today's episode, we consider whether the era of peace is over. And ask what we are prepared to do if the threats deepen.
Later, election denier Trump has talked up a purge of bureaucrats and security forces. Are we happy to nod Trump through as he advocates a police state? And why are senior politicians here cheering him on?

The working class still provide over 90% of the annual recruits. And they get the weapons, "and the training to use them". Mind you, the brain-dead also take an oath to protect the monarchy before any other citizen of Britain.

Not even. Sunak & Biden will be drinking Pims with Putin & Xi while we're all having our legs blown off.
The Accelerationist psychopaths think we need a big war to get rid of a few people and use up some of those fancy weapons they've been sitting on for years.
The News Agents numpties need to take more care not to discuss this on the same terms as it's being handed to them. The narrative is completely artificial but if they can get it to stick then we're all fukt.

War mobilisation might cause some to rebel but they will be swiftly dealt with. More worrying is that war talk is the first step to suspending civl rights and placing everyone under martial law as has happened in Ukraine. In July 2022 the Ukrainian government suspended all worker rights under martial law.

The wider Media can debate this war mongering all they want. Unless the country turns a corner and provides for people expected to fight, and offer better living standards in general. Its a big fat no. The UK could not currently equip the numbers necessary to engage a near peer adversary inside 18 months if a large scale conflict breaks out, leaving the famously expensive alternative, the Nuclear deterrent. I am not going willingly into that goodnight, with nothing in my hands. We can afford Trident, or acceptable force numbers, but not both evidently.

I'd far rather see a concerted effort on all fronts to push for peace, a bit of diplomacy and positive resolution. That's the only thing I haven't seen during my lifetime. I completely agree with Lewis on this one. Actual 1940’s-style conscription seems massively unlikely to me but the UK urgently needs a proper conversation about what our defence needs are going to be and how we go about addressing them. France gets way more bang for its buck on defence spending because they focus much more on what their needs actually are and what level of spending is needed to meet it. Make no mistake, the challenge is huge. We cannot rely on the US being there to protect us any more. Neither can we easily switch industrial production to meet defence needs like we did in the ‘40s, the UK is not an industrial economy any more and industrial skills are in very short supply in our workforce. The public is unlikely to want to hear much of this but difficult conversations need to be had.

    • @Demun1649

A simple point that everyone is missing. For all the praise, from America, about only Britain met the 2% input of funding to match NATO, was because there was only ONE member of NATO that included all wages, salaries, and pensions in the spending. Britain took too long to build the Type 45s and the two white elephants, France builds for themselves and customers. Britain goes over time, and over budget, because it is SOP to draw out the builds so the employees, and bosses, have got jobs for a longer period. France doesn't buy the over-priced, and under-useful F-35B, because they have something much better. Britain has ordered just over 50 of the lumbering, non-stealth F-35B, and has received 4, two still in America, at the OCU base, and two here in Britain, shared by the RAF and FAA. With the withdrawal of the Typhoon, Britain, which should have a minimum of 74 aircraft, to fulfil tasks, will NEVER reach that figure. Why is there no British carrier in the Red Sea? Because there is not enough crew numbers to equip the carrier battle group component ships. Tories, the friends of the armed forces. Britain is only involved because Richest Shoesnake is trying a Thatcher Falklands move to win the next GE.

The problem with "a bond with the nation" is that much of the nation feels it has already been excluded. From rampant islamophobia and other racism via the destruction of living standards and the removal of pretty much all hope of a decent life for much of the population, the last 14 years has seen the country torn apart and what it is to be British gutted.
How can we expect anyone to fight for "us" when it is clear that the Tories and their chumocracy mean to entrench their power and exclude everyone else? If we are to ask people to fight for a state, we have to build a state worth fighting for and it's abundantly clear that the Tories have spent the last 40+ years eviscerating that and will do it again at every opportunity.

20 years ago I would of felt a desire to defend this country and have no issue with it as I remember how I felt when 911 happened and that wasn't even in this country. Now my views have changed, we allow anyone into this country, allow them to do what they want and will probably exclude them from fighting in any war but force the general British public to fight. If all these weekend, free Gaza protestors wear the British flag and the armies uniform then I will be right up there with them but I very much doubt they would and would probably leave this country. Being British means being British and the problem we have is that the culture here is no longer British. To me British is more than being born in Britain, it comes from the teachings of your grandparents, your parents, your belief system etc... Sunak doesn't even have that, he's one generation British, he doesn't know true british culture and now our own youth growing up doesn't even know it as they just accept what's going on around us. This country is a disgrace. All these we let in will just flee like they did to there own countries and leave the real pure British people to pick up the piece. Once it's over they will let them all back in ... I'm not fighting for that sorry.

The armed forces need trained personel, they wont thank you for tens of thousands of greens. + the support required for a conscripted force is mindbendingly huge... What will they do?, stand there in their underpants and forage for food? (Sorry if my ex Royal Artilleryness is coming out) .. So they'll need tooling up, weaponing up, feeding up, keeping hygienic, clothing up, accommodating and training to a decent skill level beyond mere cannon fodder. That takes a mind-melting river of money and a lot of time... let me guess, it's already run out.

I served in the British Army in the late 70's the size of the Army then was 159,000 plus 63,000 Reserves, at the moment the entire Regular British Army would fit into Wembley Stadium,...
If you want peace prepare for war...
Traditional mass conscription however is not the answer, improving pay and conditions for regular troops to improve recruitment and retention of staff
    Boost the Territorial Army size
Better funding for Cadet Forces to do pre-training
    Kipling summer is up perfectly...
I went into a public 'ouse to get a pint o' beer,
The publican 'e up an' sez, " We serve no red-coats here."
The girls be'ind the bar they laughed an' giggled fit to die,
I outs into the street again an' to myself sez I:
    O it's Tommy this, an' Tommy that, an' " Tommy, go away " ;
But it's " Thank you, Mister Atkins," when the band begins to play

they'd have to try their luck with a campaign to join with "incentives" of some kind and see what that draws in but if it's imminent then it'll have to be conscription as a NATO Russia war could get quite messy quite quickly. Russia's armour is way down and their reliance on very old stock due to the massive losses of armour of many kinds there means they are down all over. same with aircraft, missiles, navy etc... they don't have much that nato can't take out with ease and some of those are under water and some fly and some and in silos... that's all they could threaten with really and against NATO they'll get absolutely REAMED on a fair few fronts.
i find it very short sighted of many when they say it's not going to affect here and it's far away. that'll change it if does kick off and the cyber attacks on infrastructure and physical attacks take place i suppose.

Should there be an attack on the Baltic States or Poland then I have no doubt that many young people would volunteer and conscription would follow. What we need is not conscription but an upgrading of the RAF and Navy to ensure we can defend these islands against any attack and provide support for any continental operations. As for the Army we need a highly effective force that can supplement the larger land armies of our continental NATO allies. We are not the ally to field a huge land army. And with all of that we need to pay our armed forces personnel properly and give them real incentives to choose the Armed Forces as a career.

Russia economy is now on a war footing and industry is building up to replace things like artillery shells, while Europe and US are not meeting those numbers. While the US currently argues about the Ukraine budget, Russia are sitting on an about 9:1 ratio in shells for heavy artillery against Ukraine at this moment. Ukraine are slowly loosing their ability to advance and ability to conduct large offensives. Ukraine will either loose, and Putin will then test article 5 on a small NATO country or end in stalemate for the time being and put back into the position of 2014 of just waiting for Russia to build back up

Also the introduction of Military Conscription into a so-called Citizen's Army is an absolute VOTE LOSER....
Apart from that the Military have the problem of what to do with those who don't wanna join up or rebel within the ranks, after all the Military only want those who want to be there and participate and not just those who only learn how to "skive", like they did in the 1950's...

But, I can't see labour being very keen unless it's needed. More likely they'll for waves of recruitment with maybe bonuses for joining or some such enticement. Maybe a pay and conditions improvement and veteran support... that might get but if it does kick off then which knows but I think a choice of ambulance/nursing (helping with the shortage of nurses) or other service like that.
