Joe Biden bids farewell: Can the Democrats now win in November? | The News Agents

  • It was an act of supreme selflessness. And one of utmost urgency. Joe Biden acknowledged both things in his speech to the nation last night confirming he wouldn’t seek re-election. His rhetoric was rousing. But his speech faltering. He confirmed for many why he had to go, and left questions as to what happens in this final stretch of his presidency.
Later, why are some Labour candidates accusing the Independent “pro Gaza“ MPs of running “toxic” electoral campaigns?
In response to our interview with Heather Iqbal, The Workers Party said:
"The Workers Party was closely associated with a number of Independent candidates who stood on a platform opposed to the genocide unfolding in Gaza. Our candidates and those with whom we were most closely associated polled a quarter of a million votes.
In Manchester our supporters were the victim of a hit and run attack in May, during the general election. In Littleborough a female campaigner of ours was assaulted outside the polling station and in Birmingham, masked men attacked our canvassers with machetes and bats in Sutton Coldfield. No other party received this sort of violent harassment. All cases are reported in local and national media if you Google them, and all were caught on CCTV."

I'm not afraid to admit that when I watched Biden’s address live it made me so emotional. Not because Biden is ageing, a little stumbley - he's always had a stutter. Not because he's 81, and recovering from Covid. It's the words. It's the graciousness and the purity of the words. It's the evident self sacrifice in his actions. It's his conviction and honesty. I knew I was watching history right there. This is one of those moments, this is an address that will not be forgotten and ranks alongside the very best Presidential addresses. It's the passing of the baton to a new generation, full of honour, optimism, ambition and hope. This is what public service and politics can and should be about.

I am also an "old, old person" and it disturbs me greatly to see how Biden has been vilified by the media on appearance yet so little attention is paid to his accomplishments in this current administration. I am not suggesting that he shouldn't have passed the baton, but I do think he is most likely capable of carrying on for six more months. The physical stress of the campaign is now removed and things can get done. Kamala has been very successful in re-invigorating people's interest in the election and I support her completely. However this underlying ageism that exists throughout western culture is an issue that creates a subtle damage. Yes, vitality counts enormously but that should not happen at the expense of what age, experience and accomplish have achieved.

As an American (hi from South Carolina!), I strongly disagree with the ideas that Biden dropped out due to his health and that the ability to ferociously campaign equates to the ability to govern. Firstly, Biden (as of now) dropped out because they concluded that he can’t win, not that he’s unfit to serve; Biden & his camp believe he could still do the job, just not win it. Winning the presidency requires barnstorming an entire continent, meeting with people all day every day, while continuing governance. It requires a different skill set.
