Here in Belgium, shepherd dogs are ALWAYS reason for discussion. To put it mildly.
But there are a few points that most people can agree on. All four varieties of the Belgian shepherd (Laekense, Groendaeler, Tervuren and Malinois) are basically the same dog. At least they used to be, and here in Belgium where a lot of people still have dogs from old bloodlines that were kept in their family or village, it happens now and than that you’ll get one or even two Tervuren-pups out of a “pure” Malinois litter and sometimes it even happens that a Groendaeler-pup appears in a Tervuren- or Malinois litter. So, beside the type and colour of fur they’re the same dogs.
However, (and this is the part where chairs start to get thrown around) we all know there are other differences between them that go deeper than their skin and it’s mainly about their character. I’m just gonna sum up a few things, you’ll probably disagree and with good reason, but it’s just my two cents.
Malinois is more athletic and considerably more determined in his approach than Tervuren. In those fields he is best compared with the Laekense. Guarding and protection is their thing, their physical abilities help with that but the main factor is their focus and relentlessness in both approach and especially follow through. And that goes a bit more for the Malinois than the Laekense, but the last one is real good with kids (almost like Tervuren) while the Malinois is good with kids...but best kept an eye on.
Tervuren is the perfect companion, especially for families with kids and other pets. Usable as a guarding dog but mainly as a canine-burglar alarm. If confronted with a threat the Tervuren will often engage (being it slightly less determined than a Malinois) but when they’re really kicked or beaten, their more gentle nature doesn’t work in their favour.
And finally the Groendaeler. Often referred to as “bobonne skeiper” (granny shepherd). This variety is a bit of a dark horse really. They are often kept by...grannies and for good reason. They LOVE to bond with one person and one person only (unlike the Tervuren), a Malinois does that too but not in such extent which still allows him to be a good family pet. The Groendaeler is quite jealous or maybe possessive I don’t know, but in general they’re not so good with kids or even spouses...some of them are simply aggressive to kids and just about everyone that comes near granny. However, make no mistake, if you touch granny you can count on a response that’s gonna be so vicious and tenacious you gonna wish granny had a Malinois instead. And although all four shepherds are intelligent dogs, it is often said that the Tervuren and the Groendaeler are just a bit smarter. They thrive on human contact (with the family or with that one “special” person in case of the Groendaeler) which seemed to have made them...smarter?
    So,
    Family pet : Tervuren
    Guarding : Malinois
    Allrounder : Laekense
Emotionally-intelligent companion that sits in front of granny for hours on end, tilting his head in hilarious ways as granny is whispering all kinds of jibberish and than, in one smooth move, attacks the first person to enter the room and keeps fucking him up as long as he moves : Groendaeler

Thank you! I was sold a Malinois, who looks as much like a TERVUREN as a MALINOIS! Either way, he is FANTASTIC!

@@lisasmith516 You were probably sold a Malinois pub that has blood coming through from a Tervuren somewhere up in the bloodline. They’re often frowned upon because they gonna sell for less money and are considered « not a 100% Malinois » but in reality you should count your blessings because the urge to protect is there (though being it a slight bit more « thought through » than a Malinois) but they are better pets than Malinois and Groendaelers and in general they are sometimes mixed into the bloodline of a top breeder to broaden the gene pool because those « hybrid Tervuren-Malinois » often add valuable traits to the bloodline. Especially the slightly darker Tervurens with a white spot on the chest are considered very valuable in terms of their increased genetic diversity. And although you’ll never see them in a show ring or at a big K9 competition event, rest assured that many of the top Malinois you’ll see have a (close)Tervuren ancestor or even a sibling in the same litter. It’s a bit of a subject that seldomly get mentioned by those who swear by « thoroughbred Malinois » but take it from me, a Tervuren is often a phenomenal dog to have in your family

I loved your video about the Belgian Malinois. I could not believe what I saw. This breed is a dog with the agility of a cat. Amazing. I'm a cat person and when my three cat boys get there funny moments they act similar, but cats only burst into serious action about once a day. Great videos and thanks for uploading them , shows that not only great chocolate comes from Belgium :-)

At a minimum you should give credit to the people where you got the videos , the images of the puppies are from DK Ranch and the adult dog off-leach is “Rancho the Dog”...

He/she probably has an issue with your emphasis on the first syllable. The emphasis is on the second syllable with the vowel "u".
