- ( www.TFLcar.com ) The 2012 Range Rover Sport and RR Evoque are some of the most off-road worthy cars you can buy. But which one is better in the snow? Or to be even more specific, which one is better in three feet of newly fallen Colorado powder. We decided to find out in this snow-worthy review by driving both Range Rovers to Gold Hill, Colorado up Lick Skillet Road. Lick Skillet Road is one of the steepest country roads in America, and when it snows three feet the road not only gets slick but also very slippery. So which one of these two British cars is the best in the snow. The old establish Range Rover or the up stark newbie Evoque. Check out this video review to find out.
@dogmazx2 You are most certainly welcome. We appreciate that you like our videos and that you keep watching them. Next up: Chicago Auto Show!
@TheMacFacts The Range Rover Evoque that we tested is 50K while the RR Sports is 68K.
i love youre channel when u do car reviews in snow i know its real snow conditions. gives you extra creds.
Thanks for the heads up. We thought about about calling 'em "Tatas" but that seems problematic as well.
@akelodmc It's very hard to show how steep something is on video. Why don't you google Lick Skillet Road in Colorado if you don't believe us
I like the sport better. The new one has really very modern beautyful design, but the sport(the red one) is more fancy, looks bigger and respectful. However I believe they mentioned they both got all-terrain tyres, but if look at the Sport(red) ones, they have kind of a grip for the snow, not as good as winter, but really all-season tyres. The ones on the white Rover looks like asphalt, completely summer tyres. You cannot compare with so different tyres.
I love how natural and fun this review is

There's quite a large price margin between the two.. you can get a basic Evoque for 40g, while the Sport is 60g.
i love range rover
I do appreciate the timely and thoughtful response. Thank you.
i have all of the newest range rovers and the evoque it a great car but i just wish it had a bigger engine it does even have close to the amount of power that my 510hp range rovers have
Nice review! I've just changed from a Sport to an Evoque here in England. I decided for the few times a year I needed the off road ability of the sport, it just wasn't worth the extra fuel consumption plus the evoque drives much, much better day to day and in my opinion, looks better too! keep up the good work!
We'd love to but getting the cars can be tricky here in Colorado.
I know you guys just have to test 'em how they give them to you, but it's never a true comparison unless the vehicles have the same tires. Would love to see the test again with both having good snow tires.
OMG! I love that Evoque! What a cutie! Thank you guys for a fun review! I am curious about its handling in deep sand and hard dirt roads. That's the only thing that I drive in. I guess if it can tare it up in snow like that, I don't need to worry.
I think you would be happier with Motorweek's channel. We use the vehicles as they come from the factory. Both had mud & snow tires and both vehicles are lauded as the best in the snow. That’s more than enough for us. I know, I know - we’re not making videos the way you like. Can’t help you pal. We do short, entertaining videos and we test vehicles differently. I think you’ll feel much better if you spend your time on another channel. We’re quite happy to MASHUP cars in fun and unique ways.
According to Tire Rack, the tires on the Evoque are not rated as all season tires. I understand that car companies put summer tires on certain cars to generate good performance numbers, but it seems like a bad idea for consumers, since most people do not know the difference between All Season/Summer/Winter tires and just drive their cars as is.
Great video, i love the sport more than the evoque
why do youuse summer tires in the snow?
They test what they're sent. How many times do they have to explain it
You guys are so much to fun to watch. Wasn't that much snow out there. I could go further in my Subaru :D
WRX Owner
No cats were used or harmed in the making of this video. We repeat, not cats were harmed what-so-ever.
... so you did a vehicle head to head with different tires? and why?
Probably cause the tires they used are standard on their respective models
@76carmel That's why this is called a Mashup Review
Really comparing a 2.0 v4 vs a 5.0 v8 lol. Sport for life🔥🙌🏻
Street tires on a range rover is not an equal comparison, this comparison is a fail.
What a great review, looking forward to this winter's reviews, hopefully see the Discovery Sport go up against the new GLC, Q5 or other competitors in the snow.
My favorite LR's are still the Defender and the Discovery. The RRS and RRE are too pretty to take out.
You guys should look into a comparison between the RR Evoque and the MB GLK350. Great match up with direct competitors
Round 1 - Tie
Round 2 - Evoque
Round 3 - Sport
Overall - Tie in all around
Strange comparison here -- full size vs. compact. V-8 vs turbo I-4. One's around $50k (Evoque) and the Sport around $100K.
Can we get a redo of this AWESOME review??? With the Disco Sport please
Man, stop calling "Land Rover" (and Range Rover) "Rover". Rover was a different company which went backrupt 10 years ago.
Because it makes the speaker sound like they have no idea about the subject.
Man, no matter how dumb something is, some assclown will always pop up to defend it.
I have a relative who insists on calling the Grand Cherokee the "Cherokee". Makes just as much sense.
Sure it is. Its exactly the same. Rover and Landrover are not the same company.
Defending this terminological failure is way worse than the initial mistake. Way worse.
Nope. You are jumping through some pretty obtuse mental hoops to try to be right.
You aren't. Give up.
Now I got it, yeah.... good idea and under that point, nice to watch.
Keep up that good work. I give you a thumbs up!
♥.♥ I love my Range Rover sport 2010 thinking about getting this one should I ?
Which one of these is better after high mileage over 100k and how long do each live past 100k? Are they just money pits in repair and maintenance after 100k?
Both beautiful cars.
@ElectroGhandi Yes - we looked carefully and we showed them on this video. I could be wrong... "M+S" could stand for "Mature Street" tires or "Miss Saigon" tires... but that would be silly... who would believe "Mature Street Tires?" Thanks for watching.
You should do another video of the same Evoque and Sport, but with proper winter tires. All seasons are fairly useless, no matter what sort of all-wheel drive/4x4 system you run.
is the evoque 4 cylinder ford based? as in ecoboost?
you need to do a neighbourhood mash-up of the local rides on lick skillet, since they race this road daily....they would be the pros of 'what works best'!
another great vid, thanks guys!
In the snow, nothing beats a good pair of snow tires...Or a proper plain old Range Roger.
Either of these are better than my 2012 VW CC non-AWD model. I got stuck 3 feet from the house during this snow haha
Rover was never competition for BMW, 'Rover' had two things BMW wanted, Mini as it was planning a revival around the time (And Bernard Pischetsrieder a BMW chairman was also the nephew of the original mini designer Alec Isigonis) and wanted to continue the legacy with the support of and to the financial benefit of the board. The 2nd interest to BMW and the division they should have never sold to Ford was Land Rover, I'm glad they did sell them but given their recent successes etc
we got a lot of snow here in colorado this past friday and today tuesday more snow thats why i love colorado
The Evoque sexy and I don't normally like or need cars like these!
And the Jaguar link kind of does it for me lol
Ford F150 SVT Raptor is a decent choice for off roading... not as luxurious but does the job well.
I really enjoy your videos! Gosh Colorado is beautiful!!!
One thing i think should be adressed for this video is both of these vehicles are using oem original equipment tires and for the Evoque that means continental crosscontacts which are by no means rated snow or mud tires. For the Rover Sport They offer 2 diff tires for original equipment one being the Pirelli scorpion zero asimmetrico which do have a very poor snow rating or the same crosscontacts as the Evoque, neither vehilce had true snow tires
No, but if you really think about it, the same can be said for a very large chunk of the cars on the market.
Hands down I'd take the range river sport ANY DAY over the evoque I mean the sport is sooo much more manly looking than the evoque and all around more badass
since the big rangie has the better tires that automatically kind of gives it a big advantage
We use “mashups” to compare vehicles that have little in common. We use comparisons to spotlight the few items they may have in common, such as: price, buying demographic, performance and so on. Why? Simply put: it’s because we find it fascinating to drive different vehicles against each other - and so do many who watch. We try to entertain and inform in a tight time allotment, so mashups get a lot of information out there about two cars - rapidly. Thanks for watching!
Did you guys use the Terrain Response system when you were trying to drive through the snow or did you just drive in standard full time 4wd mode?
very good review but i always wonder what happened to Toyota's original land cruiser, that thing could handle anything thrown at it
Can you guys test a Hyundai Tucson Limited Awd soon?? id love to see it in the snow, dirt etc
Why they didn't use difflock in RR Sport in snow ?? :-) read manual before testing :-)
i like the sport more but that sunroof on the evoque would be cool to have!
These cars both have unbelievable settings and complicated dashboard interactions that will help in these settig especially gettting stuck, you cant compare them, the sport is completely different to the evoque and what spec is each car, you get many different types of sport and evoque
Were they using snow tires? Didn't seem like they did with all that skidding.
Tata own the Rover name now. Before BMW sold off LR & Rover, there was little to distinguish the two companies, in that staff worked from one project to another, some being "Cars" others being "Land Rover".
To Land Rover purists, Evoque should be seen as the money maker that'll help bring new products to market. Yeah, it's a bit ponsy but it's selling very well and is making many jobs in the UK.
I even like the 5 door version, expecially over the X3 etc.
Guys, sorry to say this - but why, in the world, did you decide that this was a test for snow-worthiness? From my perspective Lexus RX 350 2007 is worthy then those two, at least in the snow)) And that's because I've driven that one through 0,5 m snow on the road while the snow was continiously falling for 50 km and the roads weren't cleaned. Please keep in mind that now I drive RR Vogue and I do like it.
I'd rather have the Evoque, because its gorgeous!
Try it again with the Range Rover Sport and a Volkswagen Toureg V8 TDI, enjoyable video although it would have been more creditable if both were wearing the same spec tires...
You are most welcome!
These guys are great.
When are you reviewing the new Range Rover? We all hope it will be soon!
@akelodmc I don't get out much. I spend all day watching videos... and commenting. Thanks for watching.
THIS was a fantastic review! However I would have liked to have seen a Vogue in the mix. I know that doesn't work financially, but for the sake of snow-worthiness... I just would have been interested to see.
obviously they needed in some places but I live in Ontario and we are not aloud to use them
You guys are like my buddies
do you get the defender in canada? cause i heard they don't get in the us and that is the ultimate off road machine ;)
Colorado is wonderful, these guys are funny, liked it!
and I just bought the only 914/8 left in existance from the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart...If you seriously have these, please upload a video and maybe do a comparison?
It's my dream car one day I will buy this monster its has a advantage over others
So glad I bought a range rover sport
hey roman this is a unrelated question i just wanted to know if you guys were gonna be able to compare the audi a6 and the 2012 kia optima sx
Not a fan of this review, not because they are two completely different SUVs but because you A. Used different tires on both vehicles for a snow comparison and B. Used different drivers for each car instead of both drivers for both cars. It would make sense to do the test on both cars twice with the two different drivers.
did they set the terrain respond in grass, gravel, snow?
Fair point. Car manufacturers exist to make money and that means selling more new cars however pointless. Does the world have a desperate need for yet another new 4x4 to fit yet another niche? I’m from the “run it til it drops” faction. Can’t stand the thought of wasting my hard-earned money on flashiness which costs a fortune to maintain/insure etc. My old bus of a car gets me to and from work cheaply. Leaves me more money to spend on my mountain bike and other stuff. It’s a personal choice...
Both vehicles are elegant, doens`t matter give me one of those. I would drive with no complaint.
Great video!!
Glad you're not stuck in the snow again with an all wheel drive.....
You guys should review the new g63 amg!
Range rover vogue?
Mud and snow tires can't be compared to the snow and studdes tires we have to use here in Scandinavia. I mean they look pretty useless by the looks how the Evoque got stuck..
Sorry, I realy dondt know the word mashup. Please explain, thanx.
HEY GUYS CAN YOU DO A REVIEW ON A G500 MERCEDES VS A RANGE ROVER HSE ?
two amazing cars + two amazing dudes = amazing review
hey guys can you plz tell me which is better a range rover evoque or the jeep grand cherokke
or one of them!
The Evoque looks awesome. What I dondt appreciate, ist that very stiff suspension. In todays world, all depending on the right software, there should have been a better solution to deliver both, sporty ride if you choose so, and soft suspension if you wish. Just a knob turn would have done it.
OH DEEP SNOW OH NO OHHH... uh oh ROFL YOU GUYS MADE MY WEEK
Video just popped up why do they refer the range rover to 385hp when its a 5.0 supercharged with 503hp always has been that horse power certainly not giving the correct figure's
Gonna agree with the others here... you shouldn't called these 'Rover's'.
Here in the UK, there was a British car manufacturer called the MG/Rover group that made some OK cars (they were cheap, fairly reliable and quite nice looking).
MG/Rover went bust because they couldn't keep up with the pace of their rivals! Their cars become very nasty (the one that killed them was the Rover CityRover, which was Chinese and really awful!).
Although the company has gone, their cars haven't!
Who the fuck come to test the SUV in the snow with out winter tires?
@IL0NGHORNS
Thanks for the info. With this mash-up, they've got they compare the original Range Rover and the new Range Rover, the Evoque on the block.
To me, like Nathan said, it's more designed as an on-road vehicle, but there's some off-road compability, but don't go climbing a mountain on this.
The ideal comparison test here? Mercedes GLK class, Audi Q5, and the class leader --BMW X3.
I'm not sure how much Jaguar/Landrover would appreciate you calling them 'Rover' that's the part of the old Rover Group that BMW killed off and many would say was the inferior company in comparison to the Jaguar/Landrover of today.
Non the less I enjoyed the road test, I love the Evoque, it would never be my first choice for off roading in the snow, but for snow covered roads I'm sure it would be more than ok :)
Don't you use Snowchains in the US?
Evoque is a little badass! I
RR Sport is the best !
First, the range rover sport, is nothing compare to the supercharge. Second, the evoque does have the tall mode. Third, fuel efficiency isn't that bad, the mercedes glk does 16 on highway
