  • Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park has SO much to see and do! There is the hotel, Visitor Center, 2 restaurants, a General Store, Fort Yellowstone and SO much more! In this tips video, we try to show you what we enjoyed doing and seeing on our visits. We probably missed your favorite, so please leave that in the comments! We would love to see your pictures from the Travertine Terraces on our other social media! Please send them along and tag us so we can share your love of traveling to Yellowstone National Park too.
From the Park's website: At Mammoth, a network of fractures and fissures form the plumbing system that allows hot water from underground to reach the surface. The water comes from rain and snow falling on the surrounding mountains and seeping deep into the earth where it is heated. Small earthquakes may keep the plumbing open.
Limestone, deposited here millions of years ago when a vast sea covered this area, provides the final ingredient. Hot water with dissolved carbon dioxide makes a solution of weak carbonic acid. As the solution rises through rock, it dissolves calcium carbonate, the primary compound in limestone. At the surface, the calcium carbonate is deposited in the form of travertine, the rock that forms the terraces of Mammoth Hot Springs.

Great tips! It's always amazing how much the terraces change each time I've visited. Sometimes, it hardly looks like the same place. I haven't ever done the tour of Fort Yellowstone, so I'll need to do that sometime. There's always so much to see in so little time. Thanks!

Thank you, Alexandra. Fort Yellowstone is so interesting. There is more history to see in that area of the park than many people think of.
I think that I am always planning my next trip to Yellowstone.

I love the idea of an inside out cave. We have the same in the UK the attractions think they can up the price because you are a "captive" audience. Take care and stay safe.

It is really neat to think of it that way. The food is high. I think you are paying for the “experience “. I need to get to Scotland to see your thermal areas!

It does look like a frozen waterfall! It’s just incredible. Thanks for the explanation of where the water comes from - interesting. Great tips! I’m sure I know the answer, but do you remember if the boardwalk is dog friendly?

Happy you enjoyed it. They do not allow pets on the boardwalks. 😔 But!! There is a road that goes up with a parking lot. That might make for quick looks!

I have been trying to find the geological feature I visited after leaving Yellowstone to the East. The highway dipped deep down into a crack in the earth with shear granite walls. I have always wanted to plan a return visit. If anyone could help me relocate it I would be very appreciative

Nice informative video, except when you talk about driving in from the south and show a video of driving in from the east. Minor point, as you then switch to driving in from the south. Interesting point: the grizzly bear that is shown in the Visitors Center is actually famous grizzly bear #264 who thrilled park visitors back in the nineties as she roamed the road between Norris and Mammoth, sometimes even showing up at the school in Gardiner, forcing temporary cancellation of outdoor activities. She was hit by a car and killed in the early 2000s, which is an important reminder to all to slow down while driving in the park. Over 100 large animals are killed in Yellowstone every year, and even many people have been hit by cars going too fast and drivers not paying attention. Unfortunately the Park Service does not acknowledge individual animals, choosing to allow 264 to represent her species anonymously.

Thank you Alan for that correction at the beginning. (I will try to correct that.) Thank you as well for that interesting fact. AND especially about slowing down for animals! I appreciate your comment and your attention to my details. It is always great to learn something new about the place we love so much. Kay
