The General voiced by the late, great John Mahoney is one of my favorite minor authority figures in animated films. He is willing to hear out civilians who know more about the situation and can recognize the Giant isn’t a threat. “WHERE’S THE GIANT, MANSLEY?!?”
John Mahoney also voiced Preston Whitmore from Atlantis: The Lost Empire. He has a knack for voicing sophisticated experienced men who still have kindness in their hearts despite their age and status (e.g. being a soldier or a millionaire).
The General is a unusual and good character. Listens to people. Gets the Giant is not a threat. And when the missile is coming he looks death in the face and makes Mansley stay.
The Iron Giant was one of those films that wasn’t advertised that well during its own theatrical run but managed to punched well above its weight. And hell, it still holds up super well today, in fact.
This kinda reminds me of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. Hastily turned into a theatrical movie, it didn't have great marketing and so despite being critically acclaimed, in animation and for taking the story of Batman in a new, unique direction while being a tie-in to the animated series with some neat lore drops, it failed at the box office and led to no other animated DC movie being released in theater's.
Using the CAPS system, many of these features had that rich and crisp 2D look. Later they switched to full 3D animation, but also re-opened the ink & paint animation studio. So now we have both. "Superman" It's impossible not to tear up when you hear that scene. This is one of the greatest films ever made, and it deserved so much better at the box office.
It's like seeing that into the spider-verse scene where stan lee is talking to miles...Whole bunch of grown adults in that theater weren't even trying to hide the fact that we sobbed.

One of the best things about this movie is how gentle it is, without being patronizing. The whole bathroom scene with the disconnected hand is also one of the few well done extended poop jokes in animated history. The subtle hint that Hogarth's father was a (EDIT) pilot who was killed either in WW2 or Korea. And that ending...words can't describe it. It's just phenomenal.
Sputnik was launched in October 1957. Korean War ended in July 1953. It is stated that Hogarth is 9 years old, so he was born in 1948, 3 years after WW2 ended. I would guess he died in the Korean War & that his father may have in fact been in both wars. The mother is likely mid/late-30's so the timing does seem to check out.
Basically, it's the beloved DC Animated Universe all over again, it being timeless to kids AND adults. Not even He-Man/She-ra and X-Men/Spider-Man: The Animated Series are like that these days. Anyways, I thought Hogarth's dad was a fighter pilot?

2:10 In Ready Player One's defense, the Iron Giant is not the actual character, but a player using its form. Additionally, said player ends up using the Iron Giant to perform a helpful self-sacrifice.
And in the book I don't think it was the Iron Giant used for that, since the book focused more on 70s/80s nostalgia, not 90s. I want to say the book used Leopardon, Spider-man's giant mech from the Japanese series, but might be mistaking things, it's been a while.
Alternatively, considering that in-universe, every Iron Giant model is identical to one-another (evident in the scene where he broadcasts his dream), you could interpret that that may not be the Iron Giant we are fond of, but another one of his species. Though it is interesting and cool to see Iron Giant in battle *without* him utilizing his battle form (even tho that's actually not him like you said). I know he's a pacifist in the movie, but in a scenario where he has to fend off actual evil, this is so far the most accurate portrayal.
This film deserved to be a box office smash. It was never promoted properly which was a travesty. One of the most beautiful and heartbreaking animated films ever, and still my favourite Vin Diesel performance. 'You are who you choose to be. ' 'Superman...' 😭😭
Real ones remember the commercials on late 90’s Warner Bros animated films like Scooby Doo on Zombie Island where we got those epic trailers narrated by the great Peter Cullen!
First time I saw The Iron Giant was when I was in my 20's, it was a Sat morning and I randomly found it on TV - I magically turned back in to my kid-self watching (good) 'Sat morning cartoons' - glued to the TV until it was over.
I can't describe how happy I am that you did an episode for this movie! It's my favorite childhood movie and still holds up today. The comedy in this episode was hilarious and when you acknowledged that there isn't anything really bad to say about this movie, it just put a huge grin on my face. Thank you!
This movie should have made more money at the BO. When I was a kid, I used to watch it almost every week because it aired so often on cable TV. We all loved this movie in my community and cried at the end every time
Brad Bird not only directed The Iron Giant, but he was also a producer and writing consultant during the "Golden Era" of The Simpsons. That man basically raised me.
Iron Giant being an antagonist in games and movies works perfectly with The Iron Giant movie. There are thousands of Iron Giants conquering planets, the one in the movie got reset and trained. Iron Giants are basically Viltrumites, a random Iron Giant fighting superman makes perfect sense.
The Costco chicken bake line. I'm dying. Awesome trailer, ya'll. You bring me joy every week. And putting in one more request that ya'll do What we Do in the Shadows.
I love this movie so much that on my first trip to Iceland, I actually visited the glacier he landed on and took a picture of my Pop figure version in the snow up there.
And let’s be honest, Bumblebee Movie is just Iron Giant. Don’t repeat the same mistake of letting it flop at the box office like Iron Giant though, Transformers One is epic! And I’m not just saying that because I am the voice of Soundwave! Go see it in theaters!
I remember seeing a sneak preview of it in the theater with a bunch of school age children. That last shot in the arctic of the Giant's smiling face brought the hugest shouts of "yay!" from those kids. It was wonderful.
The ending still makes me tear up at 32. I will never forget how my brother and I would always get the same movies at the video club and one day my dad got tired and went on his own and brought us this one which the shop keeper recommended. We loved it. I lost my dad already so the memory is even more meaningful now.
Screen Junkies being basically completely unable to make a joke at this film’s expense proves its a phenomenal film. I really wish i wasn’t freshly born when it released cuz I would’ve loved to see this in theaters. I genuinely can’t believe this flopped, it’s an incredible movie
Going up against The Phantom Menace meant that's where the family money was going. WB failed it by that scheduling choice, and also by how they marketed it.
the flying scene is just so good too. The sound of the jet boots, both Hogarth's and the giant's exhilaration and the perspective shots on the mother. Beautiful film!
I always thought the primary message of this film was never shoot at the massive and kind robot because it might just be a world conquering super weapon.
Felt like a broken POS for a long time but having my 3 year old nephew say "Uncle Agga is Superman" has helped me more than any antidepressants I've been prescribed.
Yeah, it's weird of them to shame/criticize Annie for working extra hours when she's a WIDOW in 1950s America. I, myself, am the youngest of two children of a widow and the scenes of Hogarth being home alone while his mom worked late reminded me of my own youth when my mom and later sister worked late, and having to learn how to prepare meals for myself or played video games and watching B-Movies in the dark.
“DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MUCH HARDWARE I BROUGHT DOWN HERE?! YOU JUST BLEW THREE MILLION OF UNCLE SAM’S DOLLARS OUTTA YOUR BUTT!” Still easily my favourite line from the film.
I really appreciate these loving reviews. Iron Giant, Godzilla 2014. Even Pacific Rim. Nerding out over something great always brings a smile to my face 😊
I have watched this movie dozens of times. It was my absolute favorite when I was a kid. There will never be I time I dont cry when the giant says "Superman".
People get onto that scene in ready player one, but i feel like they forget its not the iron giant, its basically a glorified skin in a game, and you know if you played a game with the iron giant you'd be attacking stuff and shooting lasers. You dont become the iron gaint cause ya look like him.
I love that movie, and never understood why it's not more popular. Fun to watch that there's really not much fun to say about it, since it's just sweet and well made.
This movie is in my top 5 movies ever list. I've loved it to death since I was a kid and still love it to this day. There was a point in time where I knew the whole thing line for line because I watched it all the time. The ending will make me cry every time. Truly the epitome of a 10/10 movie.
The power station's big on / off switch was so dumb that it absolutely electrocuted the box office sales of this incredibly orange, yet emotional movie that was more than a bird, more than a plane, and even better than the original Superman.
Ah yes... I was 6 or 7 years old, living in recently liberated post communist country and my parents used to take me to a VHS rental store by the supermarket every Friday, to get some movies for the weekend. Once I found Iron Giant, I used to get it every single week for several months and watch it over and over. I would like to think it shaped me a little bit.

I yelled at the screen... I was so mad... How could they have killed the giant!!??... and then... the ending... that ending break me again... but in a happy way... Thanks for the trailer!
Yep- rented it, watched it, then bought it. Very well told. Believable characters, heartwarming. I think the Caddy that Hogarth goes riding in at the junkyard is a few model years after the film takes place... though I could be wrong.

Ready Player One is still crap, though.
Man this movie should have gotten more money. I think I'll say the same about The Wild Robot.
And transformers one 🥲
This is why marketing is always will be the most important things for any products.
You know the Wild Robot is going to destroy the Box Office this weekend
@@dieptrieu6564 Well the marketing for The Wild Robot was great but not for Transformers One I can assure you of that.
i mean, iron giant was an original concept. wild robot is a transparent knockoff. i certainly HOPE wild robot doesn't get more money than iron giant.
This film deserved to be a box office smash. It was never promoted properly which was a travesty. One of the most beautiful and heartbreaking animated films ever, and still my favourite Vin Diesel performance.
'You are who you choose to be. '
'Superman...' 😭😭
I swear if they try to remake this one into a live action, I will write a strongly worded letter!
I would actually be delighted! But they best still have Vin and Harry doing their roles, though!
This was a terrific Honest Trailer.
...Makin' me miss the Commentaries even more.
Real ones remember the commercials on late 90’s Warner Bros animated films like Scooby Doo on Zombie Island where we got those epic trailers narrated by the great Peter Cullen!
Oh man, I remember seeing this movie in theaters and crying at the end. I love this masterpiece.
I love it too I just wish it didn't have so many poop jokes
I cannot see that last scene of The Iron Giant without tears, I just can't. Brilliant movie
First time I saw The Iron Giant was when I was in my 20's, it was a Sat morning and I randomly found it on TV - I magically turned back in to my kid-self watching (good) 'Sat morning cartoons' - glued to the TV until it was over.
I'll happily cry manly tears whenever I watch this. Absolute masterpiece, anyone who says otherwise hasn't seen it or doesn't have a heart
We all loved this movie in my community and cried at the end every time
Vastly underrated masterpiece. Thanks for highlighting it!
One of the best animated films ever. Between this, "The Incredibles," and "Ratatouille," Brad Bird really is unstoppable.
I had this masterpiece on VHS back in the day. The ending still makes me bawl like a baby today.
This is my all-time favorite animated movie and I cry every time at the end
Brad Bird not only directed The Iron Giant, but he was also a producer and writing consultant during the "Golden Era" of The Simpsons. That man basically raised me.
Finally! The Iron Giant is one of my favourite movies!
“ . . . Superman . . . “
*I’m not gonna cry. I’m not gonna cry*
Holy crap I'm in it! Thank you so much for doing the honest trailer!
The Greeks and Romans believed giants lived in the mountains.
The Jotun were Norse myth of giants older than the Gods.
He wasn't an antagonist in either game or movie shown here.
Not having movies like this is why kids grow up now and days so messed up
This and The Secret of NIMH are my favorite animated movies of all time.
I've laughed so hard at the Chris McDonald had to Poop E-I-E-I-O LOL 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Same here, that was hilarious, totally caught me offguard lol 😂😂😂
The Costco chicken bake line. I'm dying. Awesome trailer, ya'll. You bring me joy every week.
And putting in one more request that ya'll do What we Do in the Shadows.
WOAH!!!! I just realized today is Brad Bird’s birthday (the director) and it’s also my birthday!!! 🎊😘🎂🥳🎈
Happy birthday 🎂 🎉🎈✨️
Happy birthday!
Happy cake day!
Now I gotta wonder if ScreenJunkies planned this HT or not.... 🤔
Happy birthday, though! 🎂
@@patrickspencer6550 Ayy, happy birthday 🤗
I love this movie so much that on my first trip to Iceland, I actually visited the glacier he landed on and took a picture of my Pop figure version in the snow up there.
And let’s be honest, Bumblebee Movie is just Iron Giant. Don’t repeat the same mistake of letting it flop at the box office like Iron Giant though, Transformers One is epic! And I’m not just saying that because I am the voice of Soundwave! Go see it in theaters!
How about an honest trailer for Tarzan (1999)
I remember seeing a sneak preview of it in the theater with a bunch of school age children. That last shot in the arctic of the Giant's smiling face brought the hugest shouts of "yay!" from those kids. It was wonderful.
Do the Lego Batman Movie before Joker Two comes out!!! I love you guys!!!
I almost lost it with the Cosco chicken bake part. Trying not to laugh aloud in the open office.
Please say “I’m going to make this pencil disappear!”
Damn you for making look up stuff! Worth, IG was awesome, from the days when awesome was what people aimed for.
Please say "I can't believe they got my quote wrong! You had one job Honest Trailer! One job!"
The ending still makes me tear up at 32. I will never forget how my brother and I would always get the same movies at the video club and one day my dad got tired and went on his own and brought us this one which the shop keeper recommended. We loved it. I lost my dad already so the memory is even more meaningful now.
I'm 60 and can't even get to the sad part anymore before the tears start flowing.
We are who we choose to be. Choose.
@@Axterix13 ah true Phantom Menace came out at the same time. I wasn’t alive to see the marketing but with WB’s track record I’m not surprised
"What you have in your mouth Is ART!!!!" 😅😂
That’s what she said

One of only a handful of movies that has ever made me cry.
I'm 35 years old, rewatched it last year and I still got a ball in my throat at the ending.
the flying scene is just so good too. The sound of the jet boots, both Hogarth's and the giant's exhilaration and the perspective shots on the mother. Beautiful film!
I always thought the primary message of this film was never shoot at the massive and kind robot because it might just be a world conquering super weapon.
That is also a valid take-away from this movie.
Well that could be a metaphor of don't bring about world ending war because of something you don't understand.
Felt like a broken POS for a long time but having my 3 year old nephew say "Uncle Agga is Superman" has helped me more than any antidepressants I've been prescribed.
Don't shame a single parent in working class for having to do OT either cause a call out or to actually afford bills
I thought the joke was "how busy could she possibly be at a diner in Mayberry".
@@stevenscott2136 There's always that one guy that argues that bottomless coffee refills means infinite.
One of my favorite movies since childhood. This and Cat's Don't Dance are timeless classics.
Definition of criminally underrated. Brad birds best movie
Tied with The Incredibles in my book.
Seriously one of the most underrated movies of all time.
“DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW MUCH HARDWARE I BROUGHT DOWN HERE?! YOU JUST BLEW THREE MILLION OF UNCLE SAM’S DOLLARS OUTTA YOUR BUTT!”
Still easily my favourite line from the film.
I really appreciate these loving reviews. Iron Giant, Godzilla 2014. Even Pacific Rim. Nerding out over something great always brings a smile to my face 😊
Let's get another overlooked quality film in here. Honest Trailer for Bubba Ho-Tep, please
THANK YOU!
Love that I understand the X-Files/Friends/Fraiser references!
Suggestion: Please cover the Sopranos
I love that movie, and never understood why it's not more popular. Fun to watch that there's really not much fun to say about it, since it's just sweet and well made.
Next The Honest Trailer of The Equalizer Trilogy Please
This movie is in my top 5 movies ever list. I've loved it to death since I was a kid and still love it to this day. There was a point in time where I knew the whole thing line for line because I watched it all the time. The ending will make me cry every time. Truly the epitome of a 10/10 movie.
The power station's big on / off switch was so dumb that it absolutely electrocuted the box office sales of this incredibly orange, yet emotional movie that was more than a bird, more than a plane, and even better than the original Superman.
That's a blast from the past. I need to rewatch it.
This is so nostalgic for me! Unfortunatelly, didn't get to see it in the movies but we had a VHS tape that we'd watch so many times. I wonder if it's still somewhere, in the back of the closet... Oh well. Fun times, happy times, carefree childhood times 😄
Best movie ever!🤖
Fantastic editing on this one guys! Gives each moment room to happen
Please say in the Iron Giant's voice "Superman."
I love this movie so much. Thanks for covering it!
Love that masterpiece... I have seen it each year since it was released... since it didn't get a theatrical release in my country... first on dvd (it was those snap case... still got it and treasure it!) and then on Blu Ray (still waiting for the 4k). My kids also love it and it´s among our top five movies of all the time... and every year... it get's me... without fail... the "I'm Superman" scene always break me... the first time I saw it... I yelled at the screen... I was so mad... How could they have killed the giant!!??... and then... the ending... that ending break me again... but in a happy way... Thanks for the trailer!
you have to do shutter island now
Yep- rented it, watched it, then bought it. Very well told. Believable characters, heartwarming. I think the Caddy that Hogarth goes riding in at the junkyard is a few model years after the film takes place... though I could be wrong.
Nice one.
Also, when are you willing to do the new Deadpool Movie?
Remember when Cartoon Network would do 24 hour marathons of this movie? Back when Cartoon Network was still a good channel.
Pepperidge Farm remembers, and so do I.(Meh, even that joke is dated...Good lord I'm starting to feel my age....)
Also, I laughed way too hard at the "Tin Diesel" joke. Just caught me way off guard with it.😂
surely shutter island next
