    The handrails really look great, and they remind me of the rails my Dad put up on the front steps of the house I spent my teen years in. Sadly, he’s gone now but the handrails are still standing strong!

    Please what is the waterproof membrane you're using?

  • @alexo5861
    @alexo5861 Рік тому

    Having set more concrete anchors than I can remember, I would have put the rail in place after drilling the holes and set the anchors through the holes in the feet as opposed to setting the anchors first then putting the rail on the anchors. When hammering in anchors I like to use a allthread coupler on the anchor as opposed to the nut, if your not careful you can damage the nut and threads on the anchor, just my experience.

I came to realize to need to add a railing on my front steps as have gingerly gone up and down in the weeks after hip replacement. Do you have a link to the membrane you put under the brackets. I'll want to do that as well here in MN. Was the railing a custom build or ? My front steps are similar with just the 1 step and then up to a landing. Thanks!

    • @TheFixerHomeRepair
      @TheFixerHomeRepair  Рік тому +3

      Hey Veronica! First I would sand all of the rust off. Then use a rust encapsulator or rust reformer to help protect and prevent any future rust. After that, you can use any oil-based exterior paint. Here is an option for you amzn.to/42QbMkv . (affiliate link)

    If it’s cement with stones in it will drill through the stones?

    • @TheFixerHomeRepair
      @TheFixerHomeRepair  5 місяців тому +1

      That’s tough to say unfortunately. Sometimes it will, sometimes it won’t. If the rock is harder than the concrete in spots it might hit a rock and start to make the hole in the concrete larger and the anchors might not work at that point. If you feel resistance it is best to go slow and try to keep the drill bit from wandering. It should go through the rock, might burn out the bit faster. Hope this helps.

    Nice work.
    Well explained and executed.
    But a few little things:
    - should've maybe filled those holes with that black or whatever silicone, after the bolts went in or better beforehand and then push em in and get rid of the excess silicone, just leaving a thin layer on top.
    That should've sealed em up nicely and adding another layer of antiwater, rust, freeze and exploding concrete protection to that rubbery stuff youve glued to the bases, sealing them shut.
    -the right side...you clearly measured wrong with that piece of board, all the bolts were way to high up, as you clearly measured to the bottom of the nut and not the top, so the bolts arent as deep in as the other side as the ends you've cut were visibly longer. ;)

The exterior railings have the same balusters as the inside rails but the top rail just entirely flat and not as decorative. My ballisters are a combination of straight squares, twisted squares, and the occasional decorative piece.
