  • NBC10’s Black Employee Network held a panel Wednesday afternoon on how discrimination at the Department of Veterans Affairs led to a loss of generational wealth for more than a million Black veterans.
The VA disproportionately denied benefits to Black veterans over their white counterparts, according to recent data. From VA home loans to health benefits and education, the systemic denial created a wealth gap for over a million Black veterans. This panel discusses the American dream deferred for Black veterans and how it impacted generations.
Meet the Press moderator and former NBC10 reporter Kristen Welker introduced the event while Dyanne Glass, the Project Manager Assistant for Military & Veteran Affairs as well as NBC10’s Lucy Bustamante moderated.
The panel featured the following participants:
Elder Edward O DuBose - National Chairman NAACP Armed Services and Veterans Affairs Committee Administrator
Joe Geeter - Montford Point Marines, Veterans Service Organization
Jimmy White - Travis Mannion Fellow, Bush Scholar
Caron LeNoir-Kelly - Army/Navy veteran, Military Veteran Fellow at NBC10
Khalil Watts - Army Veteran, NBC10 producer trainee

This is truly a gem of a video. So many black veterans who are not, or have not been in the know (as myself), of the benefits that are owed for service to country. The G.I. Bill spoken of, did not offer inclusion for black veterans by design. Truth is spoken on the point of the states doled out benefits as they saw fit - in a discriminatory manner in many cases involving black veterans. This is quite similar to the USDA fedreal monies unallocated to black farmers due to localities that contrived in keeping appropriated money from black farmers with animouis. Cascading wealth cannot reasonably be achieved without a viable springboard, as VA disability awards that are meant to propel deserving veterans in an upward trajectory. The VA has black veteran miserably in this task.

With such a disparity of benefits regarding black veterans, maybe there should be a look into the Benefits Delivery at Discharge program that was created to inform military service members of the VA disability process, to insure that the information is being equally handed out to black veterans also. That age old adage "a day late and a dollar short" was spewed vehemently with animous towards blacks, and generally stated with the connotation of blacks, in general, being considered second class citizens - including blacks who served America in the military.

Hold on, how can the VA discriminate against blacks when such a large percentage of their workforce is black. ?
