  • In this video I interviewed Oleg Skvortsov, a local from Kaliningrad who tells me about the cultural links between Germany and Kaliningrad as well as Alla Ivanova, who is a local politician and answered some of my questions concerning local politics in Kaliningrad. I hope that video gives you a small inside on the history and the culture of this unknown Russian territory.

I think it is good that Russia is keeping and valuing its cultural identity in the different regions/oblasts. I also believe that especially the European nations under the EU are becoming a cultural melting pot without any special identity. Russia is special due to its cultural richness these days and the special thing about Kaliningrad is obviously that it is surrounded by "European (EU) States".

I just went for a vacation to to Germany, Poland and Kaliningrad and the buildings were so we'll kept in Poland and Germany and in Kaliningrad everything was falling apart, it looked like a 3rd world country. I can't believe that Russia is so poor that it can't even keep those buildings in Kaliningrad in a better condition, it's an embarrassment compared to the way Germany and Poland takes care of their architecture. Someone tell Russia to stop pumping money into their military and take care of your roads, buildings and people.

Once a beautiful Prussian city, where every building and every street had some history attached to it, now just another provincial russian town, indistinguishable from the others. Whatever scraps of german architecture remain here are in terrible condition and mostly abandoned, systematically demolished by the moscows "entrepreneurs" in order to build yet another faceless 10-story commieblock in their place. Local government is corrupt(big surprise) and gladly sells the land to the highest bidder. Even the cobblestone roads are taken apart and used in construction of saunas for the ruling elites. In 20 or so years, there will be absolutely nothing left to save. The economic situation is even worse. Prices are high while wages are below national average, which speaks volumes considering it's russia we're talking about. Not to mention rising unemployment and third world level healthcare. All of this, in the middle of europe. Yet our government prefers to invest into military above all else. tl;dr: the place is a shithole, don't come here, unless dying of krokodil overdose in some ruined german building is what you are looking for.

Centuries ago, Russia owned Kaliningrad and east Prussia for six years from say, about 1690 to about 1696. Or say from 1776 to 1792, I forgot the years. It's all overgoogle searches, which years Russian Kingdom of the Romanov Dynasty owned East Prussia. Battle of Eylau is one such battle. Germany owned Kaliningrad for a few centuries while Poland also owned east Prussia for a few centuries. In 1940, Nazi Germany declared that it will conquer all Slavic countries and re-settle these countries with Soviet citizens with German word anywhere in their names. eg. Boris Fritz Yeltsin, Boris Vindman Volkov, Ivan alexei Vindman. At the end of world war 2, the winning allies in Potsdam decided to give a larger area of East Prussia to Poland, as Poland had also owned East Prussia for a few earlier centuries many centuries back. Meanwhile, any ethnic Russian or Ukrainian with a German word in their names were allowed to re-settle into Kaliningrad, a smaller part of East Prussia. So, the ww2 allies decided to implement Hitler's plans at Potsdam meetings and Yalta meetings, to give a little percentage of land of East Prussia , the seaport part, to Russia, in order to re-settle Soviet citizens with a German word somewhere in their names in the smaller north part of East Prussia, which they called Kaliningrad. Russia got , say about 25 percent of East Prussia while Poland got 75 percent of landmass of East Prussia at the end of ww2. Both areas of former East Prussia are full or Poles or ethnic Russians, over 90 percent, as of today.

This is how city of kings transformed to the city of degenerates. In October 1945, only about 5,000 Soviet civilians lived in the territory.[7] Between October 1947 and October 1948, about 100,000 Germans were forcibly moved to Germany.[8] About 400,000 Soviet civilians arrived by 1948.[7] Some moved voluntarily, but as the number of willing settlers proved insufficient, collective farms were given quotas of how many people they had to send to Kaliningrad.[7] Often they sent the least socially desirable individuals, such as alcoholics or the uneducated.[7]

I have never been to that country. I read Internet news and articles. Russia was always in Europe, until Vladimir the Great started a break away church known as (Greek) Orthodox church in 988 AD, and ordered the people of Rus to convert from Catholicism to Orthodox Christianity and ordered just a few royal officials to shift eastward towards Moscow village. Rus in 988 AD was a kingdom of Europe, of size about the combined area of Massachusetts and Connecticut. Catholic priests and popes of Rus and Kyiv were ordered to serve as orthodox Christian priests in their former churches in Rus, Kyiv and Moscow, or to leave for Rome, in case they wanted to keep serving as Catholic priests. In 988 AD, king Vladimir the Great issued a declaration /memo that Orthodox Christianity was suddenly born in Rus, in a kingdom where Catholicism never existed formerly , ever. In 988, He ordered the capital village of Rus to be shifted from Kyiv to Moscow village In 988 AD, probably, to defend itself in case of an invasion and holy war ordered in future by the Pope. . Because of bad roads in 988 AD and no aircrafts and because of lack of funds, the shifting of the capital of Rus from Kyiv to Moscow village was completed in 1150 AD or so, long after Vladimir the Great, the former king of Rus was dead.

Yes Germany lost the war but after WW1 the Russian Empire collapsed and Germany gained control of parts of Russia and Germany gave them all back and did not just etnicially cleanse them like Russians did to eastern Germany. Imagine some day if Russia lost a war and St Petersburg and a quarter of Russia were ethnically cleansed and St Petersburg renamed and all its inhabitants replaced by Germans, I would never try to justify something like that and I would continue to call St Petersburg by its correct name. There is no moral justification to take eastern Germany which was the same size as Belgium, Netherlands Denmark and Northern Ireland combined from its German people.

Some time in the 1950s the Soviet Unions Khrushchev actually proposed Lithuania to annex Kaliningrad, but the leader of Lithuania didn’t want to mix the Russian population into his country. What a dumb mistake in my opinion, he should have been more open minded of the potential benefits for the future of his country. I’m sure a small country like Lithuania would be in a better situation today had they accepted that deal back then. I’m sure Poles would also much rather prefer a larger border with Lithuania than what is now. Anyway I think most people would like it if someday Kaliningrad became an independent country. They would probably not have too much of a problem in joining the European Union as a new nation and would have more opportunities in the future. Oh and it would make sense for them to change their name if they became a country. Right now Russia imposes stress in an otherwise peaceful region.

East Prussia was owned by three groups : Teudonic knights owned it longest , Germany owned it and Imperial Russia owned East Prussia for all of 5 years at about the time of American independence. The decision to give East Prussia to Russia and Poland was likely right, gift by winning allies of ww2 was likely right: that way the militarily over-ambitious clans of East Prussia will no longer have a homeland close to Warsaw to wage invasion wars on Slavic lands. East Prussia was about 55 miles from Warsaw, making it easier for Germans living in East Prussia to mount raids on the Polish capital city 55 miles away. .. Russian kingdom also owned East Prussia for all of five years, to six years from about 1775 to about 1780. Teutonic knights owned East Prussia for about a thousand (1000) years. Germany conquered East Prussia for another 1000 years. Russia owned East Prussia for the shortest time, from about 1776 to about 1791 or so. In about 1777, locals of East Prussia (likely ethnic Germans of East Prussia) had an audience with the czar in Saint Petersburg (capital city of Imperial Russia of the Romanov Dynasty) , and ethnic Germans convinced the the Russian Czar to vacate East Prussia in about 1777, as ".. we would like to inform your majesty that Imperial Russia had enough land." The Czar agreed with them, and in about that time in about 1776 he decided to give East Prussia from Russia to a local German kingdom of the area, and ordered that Imperial Imperial armies vacate East Prussia. In 1945, the situation was different:: Nazi Germany had just tried to conquer all of Russia in ww2 and conquer all of the Slavic lands east of Germany in ww2, while massacring Slavic peoples both Christians and Jews during ww2. So, Soviet Union convinced the winning allies to let Russia keep the smaller north sea-side section of East Prussia known as Kaliningrad today, while Poland gets more land from Germany, including the bulk of East Prussia nearer to Warsaw, and parts of East Prussia south of the Russian sea-side area of Kaliningrad. The military clans of East Prussia were disbanded after ww2, and given more docile last names. Why were Soviet troops cruel and East Prussia and very nice at the moment of entry into every town and village in aminland Germany? As per terms of Crimea accord, Russia was to keep the sea side areas of East Prussia (formerly of Nazi Germany) while Poland gets the larger area of the rest of East Prussia inland which were close to Warsaw. This way the allies reasoned there will never be a ww3.

Well, the Poles did a great job by rebuilding Gdansk/Danzig. My grandfather loves to visit Gdansk/Danzig, he thinks it is one of the most beautiful town he've seen, but he was disappointed about Kaliningrad/Königsberg. But I think it is cool to have a part of Russian so near and the history of Kaliningrad/Königsberg is so fascinating. Of course, as a German, I admit that it would be cool if it would be still German, but that it is not anymore, that is our own fault.

No, again the poles have no legal claim on it, 1234 the poles allowed the german knightly order (also the katholic pope) to form out of the regional prusian clans a christian east european nation wich get later the prussians and formed lster the united germany, the polish nation have claims on belarus but not on prussia!

@@weibrot8324 indeed. As far as I remember, the rulers of Poland wanted access to the Baltic Sea and asked the German Knight Order for help against the Baltic Prussai. I do not see in any way how Poland can claim this land to be theirs. Maybe also not the Germans. Only descendants of the old Baltic Prussians. So maybe only those who do the effort to learn the old Prussian language. I mean, wasn't Hebrew gone extinct too? And now it is spoken again.

@terminalgremlin No, you are wrong. Civilian losses of Ww2 between Russia and Germany are incomparable. Check the statistics. Germans were just deported to the East Germany after WW2, while East slavs were supposed to be wiped out as a nation by nazis.
