Little of that old charm remains but what does is still able to impress even though it doesn't rival St. Petersburg anymore. Before the fact Königsberg used to be about two times prettier than St. Petersburg just to give you an impression. Been to Kaliningrad five years ago and they made some progress - still far from the progress made in places like Breslau though but to be fair Breslau did exceptionally well given that the Lemberg folks that fled there were a bit more accepting of German culture and had no probs building the city from the ground up back to it's old charm.

    Ходили на фестиваль артхаусного кино. На острове Канта показывали фильмы малоизвестных режиссеров, было много крутой молодежи, все приходили с пледами и бутербродами, было очень круто.
    Немного раньше уехали и не захватили в сентябре ЧМ по фейверкам, очень интересное мероприятие, приезжали команды с разных уголков мира.

    I hope Kaliningrad keeps and expands its tram system. The UK made the mistake of dismantling most of its tram systems back in the '50s and '60s and now many (such as Sheffield, Edinburgh and Nottingham) are having to be rebuilt.

    • @mihan2d
      @mihan2d 2 роки тому +4

      They did decide to keep and restore it recently, they are in the process of renovating the fleet with the new Russian-made vehicles and also plan on restoring some old routes. What Kaliningrad did with its tram in 2000s was nothing short of atrocity, the previous administration did not care about public transport one single bit.

I am amazed how beautiful this region of the world is. I love the look of Kaliningrad. I truly appreciate that you delved into the history of this region and its city.
    I am a beach bum and am curious about the temperature and swimmablity of the water here. I love the width and expanse of the beach in your video as well as the lack of a crowd on the beach.
    I also thank you for speaking in English. Your English was so perfect that I thought your were an American. I intend to view your other videos, especially your video of you swimming and surfing at the beach and hope it is as good as this one. Once again, Thanks and Thumbs Up.

      I invite you to Gdańsk, Poland. And make a comparison: Gdańsk vs Kaliningrad. Gdańsk was destroyed during the war, just like Konigsberg. After the war, German residents left for Germany, and Poles came to replace them. And the Poles rebuilt Gdańsk. And the Russians did not rebuild Königsberg, but built Kaliningrad.

      Typical explanation of the current situation of the city by the Russians. I am a Pole - after the Germans we got 2 large centers - Wocław and Szczecin, and 15 cities with a population of over 100,000. Wrocław was destroyed between 70-80% - Szczecin in 70% and the rest of these cities were destroyed in the urban substance in the range of 30-95%. Now take a look at what Polish cities look like. Built - restored - they were restored to their former shape - even though we had no money and our capital was destroyed in 95%. We did it in parallel. Of course, a significant percentage of it could not be restored - it was mainly due to the fact that we had over the heads of communists who did not like the restoration of German monuments and often their opinion was final. Exactly - now let's look at Kalilingrad. The city was destroyed no more than the Polish one - and what does it look like now? The only thing that was left there was the cathedral on the island and a few individual objects scattered all over the city. THIS NOT ALLIAN BOMBARDINGS led to the present appearance of the city - but the Soviet government which pursued a deliberate policy of removing everything German. These are facts and stop blaming others - because then you only confirm the stereotypes about you. Your government has led to the situation that now Konigsberg, instead of the pearl of the Baltic, on a par with Gdańsk, has become a nasty communist reminder of the USSR's policy.

      You can live there but don't pretend the city to be something it isn't. It's colonial thus you won't ever be a native or able to conclusively call it home. You can only feel at home.
      Your best shot is to learn Lithuanian and study Ballistic and go from there to learn Balto Prussian even tho it's pretty much extinct - then you would have to marry a balto-prus person - THEN maybe u get to call.the place ur actual home. Really interesting to see the differences in architecture between German and Russian in Kaliningrad
    My grandfather grew up there and missed his home all his life since they had to leave the area when WW2 ended.
    But in his garage he always had a big map from Soviet time of the "
    Калининградская область". As a child i tried to read the russian names but later i was able to read them right and then i called the Russian name to my grandpa and he translated me to the former german name of the town or village. I was reading Черняховск (Chernyahovsk) and he answered "Insterburg, there was my home"
    By the way, my grandpa always liked the former Soviet Union and Russians of course, no matter what happened in history.

    • @cosmosfun76
      @cosmosfun76 3 роки тому +5

      I lived there (Черняховск), went to a Soviet school (former german cathedral), that city almost survived WW2 and you can still find a lot of germans legacy there, while Kaliningrad was seriously destroyed of course, compared to the movie from 1938. I hope at some time germans will work together with russians in this region to recover some of the currently ruined castles , this is very historical land.

    Slava you really have a wonderful talent. Not only for capturing natural, architectural and historical beauty and wonders, but also all importantly that of anthropology. The golden thread of humanity which weaves people to places where they live.
    You remind me of Frederick Skavlan from Norge who is the world's best interviewer. You want to learn something about a public figure or celebrity, you watch his interview of them because he lets his guest speak, not his ego.
    I love when you speak to locals because that's when I learn the most.
    I also love Lena's accompaniment with you on your travel accounts. She is smart and elegant but importantly real and humanistic as are your mum and sis too.

    This was wonderful. My mom's family left the area in 1945 and I was thrilled to cycle through parts of it in 2019. Your video makes me want to go back! Stayed at the Hotel Moskau. Nice hotel.

    A perfect comment written by Anna Theresa (I find this channel clean and respectable. No foul language no badmouthing anyone. The people doing the video are very pleasant.)
